Not every CEO makes a graceful exit -- just ask HP. It's clear that Deutsche Telekom chief René Obermann would rather leave on his own terms, as he's orchestrating his departure up to a year before it takes place. The 16-year veteran expects to leave the company before the end of 2013, and the company has already lined up CFO Timotheus Höttges as the replacement at the start of 2014. Obermann says he's leaving to get closer to on-the-ground operations than possible while he's leading a telecom giant. Whether or not that's the full story, he likely won't mind leaving some of DT's uncertainties behind him, including the fallout from the blocked T-Mobile merger with AT&T as well as the long-term fates of both EE's rollout and the MetroPCS acquisition. When the company's Supervisory Board chairman says he wishes Obermann would stay, however, there's little doubting that this CEO transition is happening on friendlier terms than we've known in recent memory.

Have you ever assessed a candidate?s writing skills? Many times, we speak with job candidates on the phone to gather their work history, and then we meet with them in person to assess their personality. We get a feel for their behavioral strengths and weaknesses and learn if they would fit into a company?s culture. But what about a candidate?s writing personality?
Employers need job candidates who know how to write persuasively and succinctly. In today?s fast paced working world, it is essential that your employees know at a very minimum how to write an effectively respond to email correspondence, use social media, take specific and detailed notes in various CRM programs, write company memos, and learn how to present information in an interesting and engaging fashion. Some jobs require sharper writing skills over others, but almost all jobs now require some form of professional writing skills.
You can?t always gauge a prospect?s professional writing skills by reading over their cover letter, resume, and thank you letter follow-ups because most of the time, these documents use templates or could even be written by someone else, such as a professional writing service. So how do you evaluate a candidate?s writing personality? Depending on the job position, you can ask candidates for extra documentation. For example, if it?s a sales position, ask the candidate for a brag book. Not only will it show his or her accomplishments, it will show that they can organize information succinctly and present their work professionally. If it?s a marketing position, ask a prospect to bring in their portfolio. It may contain high-level projects or examples of creative briefs they have written. If it?s a customer service position, a candidate could bring in examples of customer correspondence. If it?s an executive assistant position, he or she can show you an example of meeting notes. To properly judge a candidate for employment, you want to see past work experience in action. If a candidate does not have any past proof, it could be a warning sign that they either are fabricating their work experience, or are not savvy enough to keep proper documentation.
If you wish to give your candidate the benefit of the doubt, and even if they have a portfolio or brag book to show you and you want more examples, you could administer a short and simple writing test during the interview process. Ask them to write down how they would respond to an email that you give them. Or ask them to rework a paragraph to make it read better. If it?s in the creative realm, give them a creative brief, or a print ad, and ask them to write their own advertisement. Or you can pick a topic within the industry and have the prospect write briefly about it. If a candidate has strong writing skills, then both the interviewer and interviewee will not only have fun with this exercise; it will make both parties feel more confident that they are the right fit for the job.
Writing shows that the candidate has grasped specific subject matter. A candidate may be able to hide behind a charismatic personality, but his or her writing always reveals true character. A quick writing test could make all the difference between a candidate that understands your business, and one that is just pretending to.

Libby and Anna are now the grand old age of 14 months. ?Well, 14 months and two days to be precise.
When they were born Libby weighed in a whole 10 ounces more than Anna. ?Looking back at the photos Anna looked comparatively skeletal to Libby, with Libby affectionately described as being the ?heftier? of the two according to my consultant ? as hefty as a 5lb 10oz baby can be, I guess!
As they make the transition from babyhood to toddlerhood I sit in awe and wonder at their progress. ?It is always magical to see your child grow and change and learn new things before your eyes but with twins it?s different. ?You get the bonus of watching two siblings the same age learn to interact and discover the world together.
In the last two weeks their interaction with each other has grown greatly. ?Where when they were younger babies they were somewhat oblivious to one another, they now seem to have realised that there is someone else who ?gets it? the way they do. ?And more to the point, if they join forces together they can fight against those of us that don?t ?get it? the same way.
They have started to babble together ? to each other. ?Libby, born a minute before Anna, has maintained the position of the caring older sister. ?We have noticed that she likes to share things with Anna, breaking off a piece of her bread or taking her dummy out of her own mouth to shove into Anna?s, albeit for mere seconds.
Anna is more of a prima donna it seems. ?She loves her food. ?Loves it. ?And she loves everyone elses food. ?For one so diddy it has become apparent that she can hold a lot of food within her tiny body. ?She makes her displeasure known if her food runs out or if someone else has something she wants. ?Or if lunch isn?t prepared quickly enough.
Libby is a chatterer. ?Libby has been trying to get the hang of walking, moving herself through the kitchen whilst holding onto the backs of the dining chairs, with wobbly legs and voicing a?Whoa! Oo-ooh! rather like the Scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz. Libby loves cuddling dolls and poking them in the eye.
Anna is a noisy chatterer with a husky little voice. ?She has a tiny but fierce temper but loves the camera, posing on cue as soon as she detects that she may be caught on film. ?When they were younger babies Libby got the hang of moving about and crawling first. ?This meant that if Anna was lying on the floor or in their shared cot, Libby would often move over to her, either squishing her or taking her bottle from her. ?Anna is now getting her own back.
Both know several words in sign language and Libby says a few words herself too. ?Despite Anna looking the daintier, more delicate of the two it is clear that she isn?t. ?She can hold her own, and has earned herself the nickname ?Shrek? thanks to hear forceful, windy performances.
Libby is rather more ladylike, at times becoming quite coy and shy.
Libby likes to push Anna around on the ride-ons ? the ride-ons being the new favourite toys of the moment.
Both are becoming climbers. ?The stairs have been climbed up and tumbled down several times ? the gate having broken thanks to over-eager young boys crashing their way through. ?The makeshift blockade that Mike set up lasted for no longer than two minutes when, once Libby realised she alone couldn?t move it, waited for Anna to come along. ?Libby pushed against the right side of the box and Anna on the left and together they moved it out of way. ?When they worked it out once they teamed up without hesitation over and over and over again.
Watching them work things out and interact is wonderful. ? I?m finding it quite amazing at how, despite a seeming lack of communication, there are no barriers to what they can understand from each other.
I have to admit though that I do wonder how this will grow as their communication does. ?I?ve a feeling we may be seeing a little mischief from these two, don?t you?
?

'No, I haven't seen Anna anywhere!'
?

'Hey Libby! Do you think they saw me?' 'I'm sure they didn't. I'll swing my dummy around to distract them - just to be sure!'
?

'Oh come on! Look at my innocent face! Do you really think I'd be up to anything...?'
?

'...but if you find the boys bound behind the sofa just remember they messed with the wrong sisters!'
?
?

Unsecured business loan is a great funding option for small businesses as it doesn?t involve any personal guarantee or collateral to get it approved. Unsecured loans can be used to fulfill the short term financing needs of the business like buying new equipment?s, remodeling, advertising or paying for expenses. Unsecured Business loans differ from personal loans in the sense that these are usually meant for the business purposes.
A business must have a good credit score to avail such loans easily. Having a good business credit score is vital as the number of variables to find the eligibility of potential borrowers is limited. Commonly, loan officer certifies the credit score of the applicants ahead of approving the loan applications. For them it?s necessary that the applicant is able to pay off the loan in time. Due to its unsecured nature, the lenders would be vigilant while approving the credit to the borrower.
The maximum limit of unsecured business loan for start up businesses is $50,000. But based upon the business credit score and performance variables, this limit can be prolonged. Even so, since unsecured business loans are for short term needs of the business, the interest costs attached is usually higher as compared to secured business loans.
There is another advantage of unsecured business loans. Commonly, the interest costs on these loans are measured on the applied portion of the loan as opposed to the complete credit line. It is important because the loan costs get lowered for this reason. Thus, it?s sensible to utilize the unsecured loan only when it is needed.
Business loan is also unique since there exists generally no link between the business credit score and personal credit score. Thus, you can?t use your societal security number while applying for such a loan. Applying for a business loan furthermore requires replenishing a form which inspects numerous aspects about the business you are in. It takes into account the legal as well as business obligations which should be verified for loan approval.
The liquidity factor of unsecured business loans also makes it a favorable choice for funding. Since, you don?t have to provide any personal guarantee or collateral, you feel secure about the future of your assets. Additionally, proper usage of business loans, ample cash can be generated without considering the asset factor. Hence this is a win-win scenario for both the parties involved. The lender is assure that interest will be well paid due to proper utilization of the loan amount and the borrower can certainly endeavor straight into business without any worries.
The unsecured business loans will be the best monetary option for abrupt business needs. With unsecured business financing it?s possible to fuel the development of your business by borrowing quick cash from the lenders and after, whenever ample funds are available, you can pay off the borrowed amount easily. Even so, correct loan utilization is the vital factor as the return on investment needs to be adequate to look after the interest costs combined with the principal amount.

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Among rescue and recovery workers exposed to the dust, debris, and fumes following the World Trade Center terrorist attack, there was an increased incidence of prostate and thyroid cancers and multiple myeloma, although it is not clear how big a factor medical screening and non-WTC risk factors contributed to these increases, according to a study in the December 19 issue of JAMA. The authors did not find a statistically significant increased incidence for all cancer sites combined, and note that the findings on the three cancers that did increase should be viewed with caution for several reasons, including that they were based on a small number of cancers, multiple comparisons, and a relatively short follow-up time.
"The terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center (WTC) on September 11, 2001, claimed more than 2,700 lives and exposed hundreds of thousands of people to dust, debris, pulverized building materials, and potentially toxic emissions, resulting in short- and medium-term health effects," according to background information in the article. The dust, smoke, and aerosols were complex mixtures of volatile chemicals and respirable particulate matter and contained known and suspected carcinogens. "The presence of carcinogenic agents raises the possibility that exposure to the WTC environment could eventually lead to cancers."
Jiehui Li, M.B.B.S., M.Sc., of the New York City Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, Long Island City, New York, and colleagues conducted a study to evaluate cancer incidence among WTC rescue/recovery workers and volunteers and those not involved with rescue/recovery work. The observational study included 55,778 New York State residents enrolled in the World Trade Center Health Registry in 2003-2004, including rescue/recovery workers (n = 21,850) and those not involved in rescue/recovery (n = 33,928), who were followed-up from enrollment through December 2008. Within-group comparisons using various models also assessed the relationship between intensity of World Trade Center exposure and selected cancers.
Cancer cases were identified through linkage with 11 state cancer registries. Standardized incidence ratios (SIRs) adjusted for age, race/ethnicity, and sex were computed with 2003-2008 New York State rates as the reference, focusing on cancers diagnosed in 2007-2008 as being most likely to be related to exposure during September 11 and its aftermath. The total and site-specific incidence rate differences between the study population and the New York State population in 2007-2008 also were calculated.
Through December 31, 2008, 1,187 incident cancers were reported among the 55,778 eligible enrollees. Of these 1,187 cancers, 439 (37 percent) were diagnosed among rescue/recovery workers and 748 (63 percent) were among participants not involved in rescue/recovery. The median (midpoint) age at diagnosis across all cancer sites was 57 years. For all sites combined, cancer incidence was not significantly different from that in the reference population during either the early period (enrollment through 2006) or the later period (2007-2008). The researchers found that of the 23 cancer sites investigated, 3 had significantly elevated incidence during the later period: prostate, thyroid, and multiple myeloma. Of these 3, thyroid cancer also was significantly elevated during the early period.
"No increased incidence was observed in 2007-2008 among those not involved in rescue/recovery. Using within-cohort comparisons, the intensity of World Trade Center exposure was not significantly associated with cancer of the lung, prostate, thyroid, non-Hodgkin lymphoma, or hematological cancer in either group," the authors write.
"Given the relatively short follow-up time and lack of data on medical screening and other risk factors, the increase in prostate and thyroid cancers and multiple myeloma should be interpreted with caution. The etiological role of WTC exposures in these 3 cancers is unclear. Longer follow-up of rescue/recovery workers and participants not involved in rescue/recovery is needed with attention to selected cancer sites and to examine risk for cancers with typically long latency periods."

A political consulting firm hoping to shape the future of Manchester and state Republican politics added a third partner in an attempt of expanding its influence.
B-fresh consulting, a strategic political and communications outfit, has added Concord lobbying to the mix by hiring Tyler Deaton as its managing director. He began Monday.
Founded by Sarah Crawford Stewart and Chris Stewart in 2008, the Republican firm has about a 50-50 mix of business that is private businesses and non-profit political organizations. The company also re-launched its website this week and featured testimonials from high profile figures.
Sarah held senior positions on two winning New Hampshire presidential primary campaigns and in 2012 was the state director for Tim Pawlenty?s campaign before taking the same role for Jon Huntsman, who came in third.
Chris is a social media expert who was also elected to serve on the Manchester school board in 2011.
Deaton is secretary of the state?s Young Republicans, who worked on Jim Bender?s U.S. Senate campaign, and was a driving force behind efforts on the Republican side to keep the state?s same sex marriage law in place, a campaign he worked with B-fresh Consulting.
?It?s a real privilege to work with Sarah and Chris,? said Deaton. ?What I want to do is continue to build bipartisan support to get work done both in Concord and around the state.?
The trio has also founded a new non-profit with Michael Skelton called Voters for Manchester?s Future aimed at recruiting and supporting younger candidates for city elections in 2013.

South African President Jacob Zuma won an election to remain the head of the governing African National Congress political party on Tuesday with a landslide victory.
Zuma won 2,983 out of 3,977 votes cast at the ANC?s Mangaung conference in the city also known as Bloemfontein, making him the odds-on favourite to retain the presidency after the 2014 general elections.
Zuma faced a challenge from his deputy, former trade unionist Kgalema Motlanthe, who won 991 of the votes.
Seventy-year-old Zuma had been considered the favourite to win over Motlanthe, despite being trailed by corruption allegations.
The party conference also elected businessman Cyril Ramaphosa as Zuma?s deputy.
The vote took place despite the conference being threatened by right wing extremists. Police said four men plotted to attack the meeting, which was attended by most of the South African government. The men have now been charged with treason and terrorism.
ANC fracture
Zuma's victory almost ensures his re-election bid in the country?s general election next year, setting him up to rule until 2019.
But Zuma supporters have openly expressed fears that a victory for their candidate will push certain members to leave the party, as was the case in 2007.
They are dealing with an increasingly vocal ANC Youth League, which says Zuma has not taken the country far enough to the left.
?We are disappointed that the president has not said anything about the strategic nationalisation of mines,? Youth League interim president Ronald Lamola told public radio Safm on Monday. Lamola publicly backed Motlanthe in the election.
