Smoking major cause of irreversible lung disease | The News Tribe

Karachi: ?By the year 2020, COPD is predicted to become the third leading cause of death worldwide? said Dr. Javaid A. Khan, Senior Faculty Member Department of Pulmonary and Critical Care? Medicine, AKU, while addressing an awareness program arranged at Karachi Press Club in relation to the World COPD Day that passed recently.

While re-uttering the theme of this year ?it?s not too late? Dr. Javaid stressed on smokers to quit smoking and save their and other lungs. He further elaborated that ?Tobacco smoking and usage of fuels such as wood and coal are major causes of Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease COPD, a disease that poses major health hazards and unfortunately remains largely under diagnosed and under treated in Pakistan?

While speaking at the causes and control of COPD, ?Dr. Musavir Ansarie, Chest Specialist Health Care Hospital, said that the disease could occur due to second hand smoke also and the discouraged the ill trend of ?Sheesha? consumption specially in the youth. He mentioned candidly that, ?smoking is not trendy, in fact it?s stupidity?.

The audience were given free Spirometry test, that enables measuring lung function, specifically the measurement of the amount (volume) and/or speed (flow) of air that can be inhaled and exhaled. The spirometry test was performed by many participants using a device called a spirometer.

Both the doctors explained that as there is no cure for COPD, all the currently available treatments concentrate on slowing progression of the disease, controlling symptoms, reducing complications and improving patient quality of life. ??Stopping smoking is the single most effective intervention to reduce the risk of developing COPD and to stop its progression.? The doctors stressed.

While advising people not to ignore symptoms such as continuous cough, cough ?with sputum, felling breathless etc. And consult their doctors if such symptoms occur. ?They informed that there are a number of therapeutic interventions available for COPD, including the following inhalers:

Bronchodilators relax and widen the airways making breathing easier and more comfortable.

Corticosteroids are a class of treatments available to reduce inflammation in the airways.

Combination therapies: Combing the above therapies has shown to be a more effective than administering either alone. Combination therapies reduce exacerbations; improve symptoms and slow decline in health status.

5 Books Every High School Student Should Read Before College

By Marissa Page

Marissa Page is a junior at University of Chicago Lab. She?s a student reporter for The Mash, a weekly teen publication distributed to Chicagoland high schools.

High school is a stressful, tumultuous and, most of all, incredibly formative time. As our work and social lives grow increasingly hectic, it?s important to remind ourselves to slow down and relax. Reading is an excellent way to do this. At this critical age, absorbing good literature will help us understand our world, and developing a love of reading will benefit us no matter where we go to college or what career path we choose in the future.

Here?s my list of five books every high schooler should read, as they?ve taught me, made me laugh or cry and, most of all, made me who I am today.

1. ?The Catcher in the Rye? by J.D. Salinger
Initially, I found Holden Caulfield, the novel?s teen protagonist, to be obnoxious and irritating. If at first you dislike Salinger?s excessively colloquial tone and bizarre symbolism, try reading some of his other works and then return to this classic. Salinger?s writing, particularly in ?The Catcher in the Rye,? is confusing and contradictory. His tone does an amazing job of encapsulating the teenage condition into one character. Every teen has something in common with Holden Caulfield, as he represents the quintessential struggle teenagers face in coming of age.

2. ?Scott Pilgrim Vs. the World? by Bryan Lee O?Malley
Chock full of puns and music, this six-part graphic novel series is easily the quickest, and possibly the most fun, read I?ve ever encountered. Great for both bookworms and non-readers, the Scott Pilgrim novels (and the movie) are hilarious and, at times, very thought-provoking. The characters make this story?from earnest, sweet Scott, to joke-cracking, flamboyant Wallace Wells, to enigmatic Ramona, Scott?s love interest?they span the personality spectrum, which makes the dialogue intriguing and realistic.

3. "Anything" by David Sedaris
Nothing makes me feel better after a long day of school than laughing my butt off at David Sedaris? wacky stories. His sense of humor is funny and often outlandish, but almost always tasteful. If you?re new to Sedaris? work, check out ?Me Talk Pretty One Day? and ?Holidays on Ice.?

4. ?Slaughterhouse-Five? by Kurt Vonnegut
This brilliantly written book is simultaneously satirical, fantastical and insightful. Vonnegut?s conversational but thoughtful tone inspires the reader to ask big life questions, such as ?What is time?? or ?Is my perception of reality totally wrong?? And he does this without burying the answers beneath bizarre, inaccessible metaphors. He writes for any audience, and each time you reread this or any of his other novels, you find entirely new ways to interpret his musings.

5. ?All Quiet on the Western Front? by Erich Maria Remarque
This book is both emotionally and intellectually challenging, but so rewarding. The language is gorgeous and fluid, but Remarque usually employs his poetic style to describe harrowing attacks, deaths and illnesses during World War I. This novel places students in the minds of soldiers, who see famous battles as not just another tick in a timeline, but rather, very real, very scary experiences. Centered on a 19-year-old soldier, ?All Quiet on the Western Front? makes modern-day teenagers, who are prone to being entirely self-contained, aware of the privileges in their lives.

Rafting ? passion with adrenaline

Rafting is one of the most fun and relaxing recreational activities that can be experienced outdoors. Rafting is an activity practiced with aquatic inflatable rafts launched by a very rapid river, given that in English it?s also known as ?whitewater rafting? because in the area where the river water is whirling the color is white.

Rafting is a unique passion and also a sport with many benefits. Although it seems a relatively recent activity, rafting has quite a history.

Rafting

Short history of rafting

Since ancient times, water transport was considered one of the simplest, both in terms of transporting people, and ?various goods. Although rafting has been practiced for thousands of years, it has become a hobby in the true sense until around 1980.

In 1811 an attempt to navigate the swirling areas of the Snake River was firstly recorded, but finding that a portion of the river was whirling the river was called ?Mad River?.

If at that time rafts were made of wood, inflatable rafts was invented around 1840 by Lt. John Fremont, an important figure of the U.S. Army, and by Horace H. Day. They have designed inflatable rafts meant to explore with greater ease swirling rivers representing a real trap and which were potentially life-threatening without equipment.

In the late nineteenth century the inflatable rafts started to be sold and rafting until around the 1970?s began to be practiced as a recreational activity and not only for transportation or military applications. In 1972 rafting was introduced in the Olympic Games in Munich.

Gradually, from the status of sports, rafting began to be practiced by adventurers who sought the most thrilling sensations. Today, rafting is an excellent activity for leisure, a fun activity and also full of adrenaline.

Rafting ? fun along the waves

As I said earlier, the rafting is practiced in most areas of river swirling and people who believe that a simple trip to the mountains is too boring can spice the journey by practicing this awesome activity.

Rafting tours represent a challenge and it is not surprising that this activity has become the passion of many people who are hungry for adventure. Any rafting tour is unique so new experiences always follow. But, before all, it is necessary to mention the benefits of this hobby.

Enjoying rafting

Well, every hobby is meant to please and relax the person who is practicing some recreational activities, if we think about inside activities or practiced in the nature. First, the rafting is a sport and its practice, even occasionally, can keep you in shape, considering that to maintain balance all the muscles must work. Moreover, the rafting is an activity that can be practiced in groups, so it would be a great idea to try this extreme sport with dear friends.

Adventure and fun will be in full swing and the supreme advantage is that the sport develops team spirit and communication between those in the inflatable boat as those who are in the boat must participate actively to meeting the swirling water. Most times, rafting is practiced with 4-12 persons.

Rafting allows you to see unique places and landscapes, especially if you choose to travel in other countries and choose to practice rafting in a new region. Rafting is an activity that can be practiced in couple, so if you think to spice up your relation choosing rafting would be the best solution.

Rafting equipment is?required!

Even if benefits of rafting are numerous, there may be risks given that this activity is included into the category of extreme sports. Equipment for rafting is more than necessary and will keep you safe from low temperatures and bruises or other injuries. Rafting equipment consists of jacket, helmet and paddle, as well as neoprene clothing, used when a person falls into the water and has to stay away from the rocks, which can become a real danger. Although the vest has a large force of buoyancy, it is preferable that those who practice rafting ?to know how to swim.

Rivers on which to practice this hobby so full of adrenaline are classified according to the degree of difficulty.

Level 1 characterized for swirling rivers where there are very few areas.

Level 2 is typical for areas where water is less whirling and stones may appear. It is necessary that those who practice rafting in these areas to have minimum paddling skills.

Level 3 is typical of what we called earlier ?white water?, characteristic for areas with small waves but which require more difficult paddling.

Level 4 is characterized for areas where water is whirling, most often along falls.

Level 5 is characterized by rocks, large stones and medium waves; those who dare to practice this sport in these areas must have advanced paddling skills. Accidents can occur.

Level 6 is the most dangerous, waves are very high and rocks are dangerous. Level 6 areas are characterized by large differences between the threshold level or falls and equipment used cannot handle it.

Rafting accident

Rafting in Romania

If you have not yet decided how to spice up during the summer, trying a rafting tour would be a great idea, especially since Romania has many rivers in the mountains where you can practice this sport particularly under the careful guidance of specialists. Among the best are Buzau, Jiu, Cerna, Nera, Bistrita and Cris.

For those who have never tried rafting it is recommended to choose the Bistrita. It is a fascinating route and easy, suitable for beginners. Wherever you choose, extreme sports clubs are dealing with everything so that practicing such a sport can be done safely.

Lindsey Graham: Romney Digging the GOP Deeper Into a ?Hole?

South Carolina Senator Lindsey Graham has never been shy about expressing his disagreements with the wider Republican party, especially on the question of immigration. So great has Graham?s outspokenness been on this issue, in fact, that conservative radio host Rush Limbaugh has jokingly rechristened him ?Lindsey Grahamnesty.? However, now that dismal showings with Hispanic voters have become the cause du jour for alarm among GOP strategists, Graham is finally getting his day in the sun.

And he is taking it with a vengeance, unloading on Mitt Romney on today?s ?Meet the Press? for digging Republicans deeper into a hole with Hispanics that the party has yet to crawl out of properly.

?There?s high unemployment among the Hispanic community. President Obama did not embrace comprehensive immigration reform like he promised, but they voted for him because he?s the lesser of two evils,? Graham argued. ?Self-deportation being pushed by Mitt Romney hurt our chances. We?re in a death spiral with Hispanic voters because of rhetoric around immigration and candidate Romney, in the primary, dug the hole deeper.?

Has Lindsey ?Grahamnesty?s? day come at last? Watch his full interview with ?Meet the Press? below and decide for yourself:
