Make and Use Ranger Beads to Measure Your Walking Distance [Outdoors]

Make and Use Ranger Beads to Measure Your Walking DistanceOriginally developed by military forces, ranger pace-counting beads are a great way to measure distances travelled by foot. A set of ranger beads is merely a lanyard with two sets of beads; the bottom section has nine and the top section has five. The beads are moved at various distances to count your total distance walked.

Measure how many steps it takes for you to walk 100m. Now when you walk, for every 100m you walk move one of the 9 lower beads up. On the tenth time instead move one of the 5 upper beads up and pull all 9 of the lower beads back down to reset; this indicates that you have walked 1km. You can measure up to 5km with this configuration of beads. Brian's Backpacking Blog has multiple methods of measuring strides and also gives alternate uses for using ranger beads in daily life, such as counting the number of glasses of water you drink each day.

Making a ranger band is dead simple. Just take a little paracord or other cordage and small beads you can find in any craft store, WalMart, or even online at Amazon and tie it as per the photo above. If you need detailed instructions, you can find them at Instructables.

Of course, many people would prefer to use a pedometer and not have to count their paces, but ranger beads are cheaper, easy to make, and don't need batteries. Just because we usually use a GPS to find our way does not mean we should not know how to use a map and compass. If you're a frequent hiker it's worth taking the time to make and use ranger beads once so you'll have the skill if you ever need it.

Investors to vote against Murdochs at News Corp meeting

LONDON (Reuters) - Rupert Murdoch's multi-million dollar campaign to win back the hearts and minds of News Corporation's independent investors suffered a new blow on Friday after another key shareholder group called for his eviction from its board.

Hermes Equity Ownership Services (HEOS), the shareholder advisory service affiliated to Britain's largest pension fund, issued a rallying cry to investors to vote against all Murdoch family re-elections to the board of the embattled media group at next week's annual general meeting on October 21.

"The time is right for the company to appoint an independent chairman to rebuild trust, help correct the governance discount, and ensure that the interests of all investors are properly represented," Jennifer Walmsley, Director of Hermes Equity Ownership Services, said.

"We have a battle on our hands to demonstrate the strength of shareholder opposition because so many shares are held by the family or by people affiliated with the family," she told Reuters.

The organization, which votes on behalf of the BT Pension Fund and more than 20 other institutional clients running $140 billion of assets, has also called for an independent investigation into the phone hacking scandal that led to the closure of top-selling British tabloid The News of the World.

Besides seeking the removal of Murdoch and sons James and Lachlan, HEOS -- whose members hold 0.5 percent of News Corp's shares -- Hermes is also withholding support for the re-election of directors Arthur Siskind and Andrew Knight, citing concerns for their independence.

The statement from HEOS is the latest in a flurry of anti-Murdoch lobbying from corporate governance watchdogs and proxy voting companies all over the world.

Earlier this week, Institutional Shareholder Services Inc. (ISS) said Murdoch and 10 other News Corp directors should be ousted from board in the wake of the phone hacking scandal, which it said "laid bare a striking lack of stewardship and independence."

The ISS statement prompted News Corp, which has bought back more than $1 billion of its stock since August, to step up its appeal for shareholder support with a letter that reiterated its strong financial performance in the face of the flagging global economy.

But Walmsley said investors were growing impatient for fundamental change that would see the infamous 'Murdoch discount' gone for good.

News Corp shares typically trade below rival media groups because the market applies a discount to reflect Murdoch's tight control of the company and a tendency to make decisions that shareholders may not support.

"There's an enormous groundswell of opposition and I think there are a lot of investors out there who feel ... the governance structures in place are clearly not sufficient to safeguard the interests of minority investors," Walmsley said.

"There is a huge problem with shareholder democracy at News Corp -- it breaches what we see as a fundamental shareholder right of 'one share, one vote'," she said.

The war of words between News Corp and its shareholders over the need for a sweeping purge of its board is likely to revive a debate over whether James Murdoch should be forced to give up his role as chairman of British Sky Broadcasting.

Investors in BSkyB -- News Corp's erstwhile bid target -- will vote on the make-up of their board next month.

Interview with Jerry Mills - Small Business Trends

Jerry Mills of B2B CFOYou might not expect?the author of two business books, speaker, contributor, and founder of B2B CFO? to be into yoga and tai chi, but that?s exactly what helps Jerry Mills stay balanced between work and life. He practices regularly and also strives to read nonfiction books:

?I often have my most creative business ideas after I have lost myself for a few hours in a good murder mystery. It seems that the human mind needs a break in order to be most productive.?

And productive he is. His firm,?B2B CFO?, provides part-time CFO services to small and midsized businesses. Currently, the company boasts?200 B2B Partners who serve more than 750 clients with combined annual sales totaling $5 billion dollars. In the next five years, Mills expects to have 400 partners and $45 million in sales. It?s no wonder he made the list of Small Business Influencer Champions this year.

Mills attributes his firm?s success to recruiting top professionals, being on the cutting edge of technology and hiring a stellar public relations firm.

Jumping in With Both Feet

Mills was reluctant to start his business back in 1987, but some valuable advice got him moving:

?A man named Roger gave me some good advice. He said, ?Jerry, the hardest thing you need to do is to make the decision. Once you make the decision, everything else will fall into place about what you need to do to grow your business.? He was 100 percent correct.?

And while technology is a huge part of?B2B CFO?s? platform now, if Mills has any regrets, it?s that he didn?t dive into technology sooner. He says he wasn?t proactive enough upfront about technology, and wishes he had spent more time and money investing in it early on.

Back to Balance

We hear a lot about work/life balance, but few business owners truly practice it. Mills insists that it be part of every leader?s life:

?If every small business owner had an extra hour in their day, they should rotate that time doing two things: (1) exercising and (2) reading good non-business books.?

If reading good books and practicing Pilates will give us the success you?ve got, Jerry, we?re on board.

Jerry Mills was recognized as a?Small Business Influencer Champion for 2011. Read more of our?Small Business Influencer?Champion interviews.

First school finance lawsuit filed ? Off the Kuff

More will follow, it?s just a matter of when and how many.

A coalition representing public school districts, taxpayers and parents filed a lawsuit against the state in Travis County district court Monday night. The Texas Taxpayer & Student Fairness Coalition claims the state?s public school finance system is unconstitutional because it does not treat Texas taxpayers and school children fairly.

[...]

The group of more than 150 school districts represented by the coalition continues to grow daily, and many more districts, taxpayers, parents and even business owners are expected to formally join in the coming months, Gray said.

Named as plaintiffs to represent the Texas Taxpayer & Student Fairness Coalition are the Hillsboro, Hutto, Nacogdoches, Pflugerville, San Antonio, Taylor, and Van independent school districts.

The trustees of the Houston Independent School District are expected to meet Thursday to discuss possible legal options, according to HISD spokesman Jason Spencer.

As noted in the wire story, this is the Equity Center lawsuit that I have blogged about before. You can read their press release here, and a copy of the complaint they filed here. Needless to say, I look forward to seeing this play out.

The actual filing comes a couple of days after this Statesman story about the state of the anticipated litigation, which has a succinct summary of what?s at stake.

At least three legal teams representing different types of school districts intend to file lawsuits soon.

Each of the lawsuits, while making somewhat different claims, will center on the 48 words included in the Texas Constitution since 1876 that require the Legislature to provide an ?efficient system of public free schools.?

Schools argue that the system is anything but efficient because, they say, funding levels are arbitrary, irrational and inequitable.

They maintain that the Legislature has once again levied a statewide property tax, which is constitutionally prohibited.

Finally, they say funding is inadequate to prepare students to meet the state?s standards, which have been ratcheted up in recent years.

The lawsuits will be combined for a trial that would probably be held next fall in Travis County, which could produce a district court ruling in time for the 2013 legislative session. A direct appeal to the Texas Supreme Court would almost certainly follow.

In other words, despite the Equity Center?s hope of a 2013 conclusion, which would be in time for the next regular legislative session, we likely won?t get a resolution to this until 2015. It is possible that the Supreme Court could mandate a deadline before then, however, as was the case with the 2005 West Orange-Cove lawsuit, which required a special session to meet its 2006 goal. On the plus side, that ought to make fixing school finance a genuine issue for the 2014 elections. I can hope, can?t I? There?s a lot more detail in the story, so read the whole thing.

Tips For Preventing Breast Cancer. | breast cancer awareness

There is so much awful news and information out there about breast cancer. These days it seems that every magazine, newspaper, radio show, and piece of mail has a headline declaring that every woman?s risk of developing breast cancer is increasing. There is a numbing feeling of inevitability in all this information we hear and read that more and more women tend to think about breast cancer as a ?when? rather than an if.

There is so much frightening information about the disease out there. The stats available are horrible and this bring one major question to mind; ?what can be done to prevent breast cancer?? The bulk of medical advancement in the area of breast and indeed most cancers, involves what should be done after, and not essentially before, getting the disease. There is more to preventing breast cancer than the ritual yearly mammogram. Of course this may help detect the breast cancer at its early stage, but that is about the best it can do. It won?t prevent you from getting the disease. To prevent breast cancer, we need to be more proactive, we need to take individual and collective action.

The first step towards proactively preventing breast cancer is to understand the causes and risk factors of breast cancer and what decreases breast cancer risk. However, there are few conclusive answers to these queries, partly because most research focuses on eliminating breast cancer after ? not before ? it occurs. Medical research has validated so few risk factors for breast cancer that almost 70 percent of the women diagnosed with breast cancer are not associated with any clear cut risk factor.

To make matters worse, our sex, age, reproductive history, family history, exposure to radiation (such as fallout from above-ground atomic bomb tests), race, culture, and height are factors beyond our control. When we?re told that these factors play crucial roles in the cause of breast cancer, we can be left with feelings of hopelessness and panic. For instance, being a black woman or being from a family with history of breast cancer, puts you in the forefront of those at risk of breast cancer. These are things we don?t decide for ourselves.

When we include risk factors that are considered ?not well substantiated?, but which are clearly contributing to breast cancer incidence, including ingestion of and exposure to prescription hormones, hormone-mimicking organochlorines, prescription drugs, petrochemicals, and electromagnetic fields, as well as unwise lifestyle choices such as smoking tobacco, drinking alcohol immoderately, wearing tight bras, or not exercising, then we can find that there are indeed many ways we can reduce our chances of getting breast cancer and in essence preventing it.

Individually, we can prevent breast cancer by buying and eating organically grown food, filtering our water, building powerful immunity, living wisely and vigorously, being in touch with our breasts, using natural remedies for menopausal problems.

Try out the following tips:

- Aerobic exercise 3-4 times a week

- Maintaining a positive mental attitude

- Breathwork and deepening body-awareness

- Expressing your feelings to keep your energy flowing

- Eating healthy foods and taking the ?right? supplements

- Avoiding toxicity

Try as much as you can to avoid the following and you will be as far from breast cancer as you humanly can:

Any medication containing acetaminophen

Products such as Tylenol, Sudafid, Bromo seltzer, vicodin, and many others which drive down the glutathione levels in the body. Glutathione is an essential antioxidant and detoxifier.

Aspartame (not to be confused with aspertate) has been proven to cause cancer in rats. It is a common ingredient in many no-sugar products such as yogurt, ice cream, desserts and carbonated beverages. Splenda is also harmful.

Toxins. Use toxin-free, organic products. Wash all fruits and vegetables thoroughly with soapy water to remove chemical residues. Better yet, buy only organic products and non-GMO (non-genetically modified) foods. Read labels (veggies and fruit will have an 9 to indicate organic and an 8 for non-GMO).

Active computer screens should be at least 18 inches away from your body. You need to be at least 36 inches from your active television screens.

It is obvious that several factors that are known to predispose someone to breast cancer are not completely within our control. It makes more sense therefore, to be very keen about your breast. This serves a dual function. Even when it does not completely protect you from cancer, it allows for early detection of the cancer when it does occur. No one knows your body as well as you do. That?s why it?s essential to examine your breasts at the same time every month ? so you can detect any changes that might occur. When you do the self-examination, you are reassuring yourself that your body is still in great condition

Breast Self Exams still remain the number one method for detecting changes in breast health. Although, finding any symptoms does not really mean you have cancer but when you have it, early detection means your survival probability is very high. Very high! It also means you have a broad range of alternative and complementary treatment options.

When we talk about breast cancer, the second worst killer after lung cancer, knowledge is not just power, it is your life!

Big East looks at 12 teams for football (AP)

NEW YORK ? Big East schools gave a go-ahead Monday for the conference to expand to as many as 12 teams for football, a move that could involve adding six members.

The schools' presidents and chancellors gave approval for the league to talk with outside schools. The Big East said in a statement that it's "considering moving to a model that includes 12 football playing schools."

The Big East has been ravaged in the ongoing conference shuffles, losing longtime members. The move on Monday is the Big East's first formal attempt to make up for its losses.

Syracuse and Pittsburgh started the recent exodus by deciding to leave for the Atlantic Coast Conference. The governor of Connecticut has said UConn also is interested in the ACC, and there has been speculation that Rutgers, too, could leave the Big East.

The league thought it had strengthened its football status by adding Texas Christian. But TCU reversed course and accepted an invitation to join the Big 12 on Monday. TCU will have to pay the Big East a $5 million fee to leave without ever playing a league game.

"Although never having competed as a member of the Big East Conference, we are disappointed with the news that TCU is joining the Big 12," Big East Commissioner John Marinatto said.

Marinatto noted that the school presidents approved expanding the conference earlier Monday in a teleconference.

"We anticipate taking action in the near future," he said.

Without TCU, the Big East would be down to six football schools: West Virginia, Louisville, Cincinnati, South Florida, Rutgers and Connecticut. The league also includes DePaul, Marquette, St. John's, Seton Hall, Villanova, Georgetown, Providence and Notre Dame for sports other than football.

East Carolina has applied for membership to the Big East. Conference USA members Central Florida and Memphis also have been looking to join a conference with an automatic bid in the Bowl Championship Series.

Former Notre Dame head coach Ara Parseghian said over the weekend that Notre Dame could be forced to join a conference for football if the move toward a few super conferences continues.

Comcast testing pay-per-package, still afraid of a-la-carte

Charleston, South Carolina might be famous for the eponymous knee / hand dance, but this week sees it become the second location in the US to get Comcast's MyTV Choice. Rather than buying all the channels, or paying á la carte for just the ones you watch, you pick a platform and then bolt on a package of channels, grouped by theme -- you get "Entertainment & Lifestyle," "Movies," "Kids" or "News & Info." These smaller, cheaper bundles are in response to being forced to carry channels owned by the same group, if you're paying for MTV, you're also paying for TV Land, for example. Still, those in the city (when not dancing their knee joints away) should be interested to know that the Get Started platform costs $25, Get Started Plus $45 and each additional package is $10.

[Thanks, Saye]
