Hispanic voters: Stick with Obama or go with GOP? (AP)

LAS VEGAS ? A year before the 2012 presidential election, Hispanic voters are facing a choice. They can continue to support President Barack Obama despite being hurt disproportionately by the economic downturn or turn to Republicans at a time when many GOP presidential hopefuls have taken a hard line on immigration.

Obama kicks off a three-day trip to Western states trip with a stop Monday in Las Vegas, where he wants to rally support for his jobs agenda in Congress. Nevada has the nation's highest unemployment rate, 13.4 percent.

The trip comes as Republican candidates have taken a more strident tone on immigration.

Businessman Herman Cain recently suggested electrifying a fence along the U.S. border with Mexico to kill illegal immigrants; he later called the remark a joke and apologized. Minnesota Rep. Michele Bachmann has raised the issue of "anchor babies," or U.S.-born children of illegal immigrants; it's a term that some people find offensive.

Texas Gov. Rick Perry has been criticized by opponents for signing a law allowing some illegal immigrants to get in-state college tuition. Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney said most of the jobs created under Perry's watch went to illegal immigrants. Perry lashed into Romney during last week's GOP debate in Las Vegas for hiring a lawn care company that employed illegal immigrants.

Obama won 67 percent of Hispanic voters in 2008 but many of those voters have become disillusioned during the past three years. Unemployment among Hispanics tops 11 percent and many Latinos are losing their homes. Others criticize the number of deportations under Obama's presidency and the lack of progress on a comprehensive immigration plan.

"I am willing to support him, but I would like him to keep his word on all the promises he made," said Marcos Mata, 17, a Las Vegas high school senior who will vote for the first time next year. "Not just on immigration. But I don't know if I see any improvement. The jobs act, it's a good idea but he should have been doing that a long time ago."

Recent Gallup polling showed Obama with a 49 percent job approval rating among Hispanics, compared with about 60 percent in the beginning of 2011. Hispanic voters could prove pivotal next year, especially in fast-growing and contested states such as Florida, New Mexico, Nevada and Colorado.

Obama has said his jobs agenda would help Hispanics in the construction industry and provide tax breaks for small businesses. On immigration, he has targeted violent criminals for deportation and urged Congress to create a pathway to citizenship for illegal immigrants.

Obama also has sought support for legislation that would provide a route to legal status for college students and members of the military brought to the country as children.

Republicans sense an opening and have courted Hispanic voters through Spanish-language radio and television ads, criticizing Obama's handling of the economy.

Crossroads GPS, a Republican political organization tied to strategist Karl Rove, ran a Spanish-language ad in five states last summer called "Despertarse," or "Wake up," depicting a young mother pacing her home early in the morning, worried about the economy and her children.

President George W. Bush was supported by 44 percent of Hispanic voters in 2004 but that level slipped for the 2008 GOP nominee, Arizona Sen. John McCain. Party officials promote the success of prominent Hispanic Republicans, including Florida Sen. Marco Rubio, New Mexico Gov. Susana Martinez, and Nevada Gov. Brian Sandoval, but some worry that a harsh tone on immigration could undermine their efforts.

"The fundamental question will be whether the economic concerns of the Latino community are so severe that they are less critical of anti-immigrant positioning by the Republican party," said Adam Mendelsohn, a Republican strategist and former adviser to ex-Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger of California.

Mendelsohn warned that Romney could damage his general election prospects if he makes immigration a focal point during the primary. "If the conventional wisdom is that Romney won the nomination because he beat up Perry on immigration, that's a narrative that will alienate Latinos."

Voters like Jose Hernandez, a Republican, are watching closely. Hernandez said his Las Vegas real estate business has faltered with the housing market. Most of his neighbors and clients are more concerned about the economy than immigration but he has found the tone of the GOP debate offensive, including comments about illegal immigrants stealing jobs.

"That's just ignorance," Hernandez said. "The Republicans need to talk about making it easier for people to come here."

Democrats say the immigration rhetoric in the GOP debates could have a similar impact that tough anti-immigration laws had in California during the 1990s under Republican Gov. Pete Wilson. Democratic presidential nominees have not lost California since 1988.

Obama's campaign is aggressively courting Latino voters.

In Fort Collins, Colo., on Saturday, about a dozen volunteers walked door to door to register voters and hand out pamphlets. "If we turn out 15,000 to 20,000 votes, that's going to make a big difference," said Joe Perez, 67, of Greeley, Colo.

Turnout will be key. Many Hispanic Democrats say the Republican debate on immigration has turned off Latino voters but worry that a weak economy could make it more difficult to encourage Hispanics to support Obama.

"Building the excitement and the enthusiasm to go to the polls, that's something we're going to have to figure out how to do," said Maria Elena Durazo, secretary-treasurer of the Los Angeles County Federation of Labor. "They just feel down. The economy is terrible so our challenge is still going to be getting them to the polls. I think we can do it."

NY hotel maid: Strauss-Kahn doesn't have immunity (AP)

NEW YORK ? Attorneys for a New York City hotel maid who contends she was sexually assaulted by former International Monetary Fund leader Dominique Strauss-Kahn say he doesn't have immunity from a civil lawsuit filed against him.

The lawyers quote the IMF and the U.S. Department of State as saying Strauss-Kahn wasn't immune in the days after the May encounter at the Sofitel hotel in Manhattan.

According to the papers filed Monday by attorney Douglas Wigdor, the Department of State wrote: "The IMF is not seeking to assert any immunities on behalf of Dominique Strauss-Kahn. But our understanding is that immunity in this particular case and with IMF officials is that it would only involve their official capacity and carrying out their duties in their official role. And that doesn't apply in this case."

Strauss-Kahn initially was charged with attempted rape after the maid said he attacked her in his hotel suite and forced her to perform oral sex. The criminal case was dismissed when prosecutors said they had lost faith in her credibility after a series of lies she told them unrelated to the assault allegations.

The maid filed the civil complaint against the one-time French presidential contender when the criminal case was still active.

Strauss-Kahn argued last month that the civil case, pending in the Bronx, should be dismissed because he had diplomatic immunity. His lawyers argued he should be immune under international law even though he had already resigned his post as leader of the IMF when the lawsuit was filed. They said his immunity stood until he left the United States, shortly after his criminal case was dismissed.

Attorneys for the maid, Guinean immigrant Nafissatou Diallo, said the suggestion Strauss-Kahn had immunity was "a transparent attempt to delay these proceedings and should be denied in its entirety as utterly meritless and frivolous." If he had any immunity at all, they argued, he forfeited it when he resigned.

An IMF quote on the issue echoed the Department of State, saying his immunities were limited and not applicable to this case.

Attorneys for Diallo, who came forward publicly in a series of interviews, filed the lawsuit against Strauss-Kahn on Aug. 8. The motion filed Monday reiterated in graphic detail her version of their encounter. The lawsuit doesn't ask for specific damages.

There is a lower burden of proof in civil cases, and it is possible that Strauss-Kahn would have to testify if the maid's case went to trial.

Strauss-Kahn, who's married, has admitted what he called an inappropriate sexual encounter with the chambermaid, calling it a "moral failing" that he deeply regrets but insisting there was no violence.

A writer's case against Strauss-Kahn in Paris also was dropped this month. French prosecutors said that while he may have done something that qualifies as sexual assault they couldn't send him to trial because it happened too long ago. Strauss-Kahn called the writer's claim imaginary.

Music streaming site Deezer to launch in 100 countries (Reuters)

PARIS (Reuters) ? French on-line music streaming service Deezer will launch in more than 100 countries in the coming weeks, and the start-up is negotiating with roughly a dozen telecom operators on partnerships in a bid to expand its global reach.

Chief Executive Axel Dauchez told Reuters on Tuesday that Deezer's approach differed from its rivals, such as U.S.-based Pandora and Sweden's Spotify, because it had decided to avoid the U.S. market because of the high costs and intense competition involved.

Instead he said Deezer will soon launch in a slew of other places overlooked by its rivals, including Germany, Italy, Spain, Turkey, Indonesia, Korea, Mexico and Brazil.

"The minute that I tell the major music labels that I am not interested in signing for rights to the U.S., the negotiations over terms become much much easier," Dauchez said in an interview.

"Instead we aim to sign global licensing deals, without the U.S. or Japan, so we can roll out in dozens of countries quickly."

It's a risky strategy given that the music business generates the lions' share of revenues and profits in the United States.

The U.S. has also been at the forefront of deep changes in the music business as giants like Universal Music and EMI try to survive despite rampant online piracy, and Apple continues to be a powerful force a decade after opening its online music store iTunes.

Today a crop of streaming websites like Pandora, Rhapsody, Spotify and Lastfm.com are also jostling to convince American users to sign up for their free and paying services.

FRANCE TELECOM PARTNERSHIP

In what Dauchez dubs an "industrial"-style expansion, Deezer has designed its site to deploy quickly in many countries now overlooked by the music industry, from Botswana to Indonesia.

"We built our site to be able to deploy in a hundred countries with the flip of a switch," he said. "The music industry earns 80 percent of its profit in seven countries so there are many under-monetized countries."

In contrast, he said Deezer's competitors had less of a global approach so far, adding that Spotify was in 8 markets, while Apple's iTunes was in less than 30.

Deezer, which is privately held and has raised some 15 million euros from investors to date, now has 20 million users signed up for its free streaming service in France.

Asked whether Deezer would need to raise additional funds to fuel its international expansion, Dauchez said that it would depend on the level of investments needed next year.

Less of a household name outside its home market, Deezer just launched in the U.K. last month and is also betting that its integration into Facebook -- a feature it shares with key rivals -- will help it grow abroad.

The site has roughly 50 million euros in revenue and Dauchez said he expected it to break-even this year. It has signed deals with about four major record companies and is now negotiating with a few others, boasting a catalog of 13 million songs.

In summer of 2010 Deezer signed a crucial partnership with France's biggest mobile operator, France Telecom's Orange, in which Deezer's ad-free premium service, which usually costs about 10 euros a month, was bundled into some smartphone and broadband offers.

The deal helped Deezer rack up some 1.4 million paying clients -- up from just 25,000 -- and was seen by the mobile operator as a way to improve customer loyalty. Under the terms of the deal, France Telecom took an 11 percent stake in Deezer.

"We hope to replicate the Orange model with other telecom operators," said Dauchez, declining to say which operators it was in talks with.

Team XBOX Reviews Pets | Simprograms

The reviews are finally coming in, more and more I say. Anyways, here?s a 3 page review of the 360 version of Pets by Team XBOX.

The core gameplay that made the series so popular is relatively simple in concept, and familiar to anyone who has ever played a Sims game: you take control of a Sim and live out their life. You?re given the option to create a Sim to your own liking, down to their outfits, their traits, their lifetime goals, their appearances, and even the pitch of their voice. Whether you control one of them or a household is up to you, but they all have the same basic goals once you create them: they want to live. They?ll need to eat, they?ll make a mess, they will strive for jobs, and sometimes they?ll even set stuff on fire. However, what makes the game so engaging is that you have ultimate control over their destinies.

Ghost Recon: Future Soldier—the Real Military Tech Behind the Game

The newest game in the Tom Clancy Ghost Recon series?Ghost Recon: Future Soldier?comes out next spring, but is set two decades in the future. The game designers studied the newest weapons and weapons research at work in the real U.S. military for inspiration for arming their Special Forces soldiers of the future. Here's what you can do in Future Soldier, and how close today's real military tech is to the game's. By John Brandon

1 of 5

Any first-person shooter has an overlay to tell you at least which gun you're using and how much ammunition you've got left. But Ghost Recon: Future Soldier gives its players information far beyond that. The game presents an augmented reality-style overlay over your field of view that shows potential enemy locations and other intelligence data. And a new kind of HUD emanates like a holographic projection around your gun and shows which weapon you've selected, as well as remaining ammo. The HUD looks like it floats in space, so as you move the information displays for a better view you never have to take your eyes off the enemy.

In the real world, research projects using overlays to augment reality are everywhere. Getz pointed out just a few that helped inspire the game's tech: BMW has introduced a "maintenance goggles" concept for cars, where a technician can see an overlay of needed repairs and how to do them. Mapping technology already uses augmented reality. For example, the Yelp app for iPhone has a mode that displays nearby restaurants in your vicinity; you just hold your phone and point it the way you want to go. This pool table concept at Queen's University could teach players the game by displaying the best angles and caroms for accurate shots.

DeGay says that fully augmented reality in every solider's field of view is many years away, simply because the technology would require excessive battery power. But in some ways the tech is already creeping into use on the modern battleground. Soldiers can use computers and even an iPad to see mission status, whether troops have enough water for a given objective, track movements, and check ammo levels. In a more futuristic vein, the Nett Warrior program?a research project by the U.S. military that is developing an advanced combat suit for future soldiers (formerly known as Future Force Warrior)?also uses a dropdown HUD that shows an augmented view of the battlefield, although the HUD blocks one eye and does not use an overlay view.

And, Getz says, the pop-up display will become more necessary for future weapons, such as guns held at the waist, because soldiers will need to keep an eye on the enemy and see a pop-up that shows ammo remaining. "For non-eye-aligned personal weapon systems to be fired accurately from the first round out of the barrel, some kind of camera/heads-up-display targeting system will be needed," he says.
