Italy Bound

THIS IS A CLOSED ROLE-PLAY BETWEEN SORELLA AND I, DO NOT POST HERE.

ARIANNA ROSE GRANT

It was early Sunday morning. Arianna always woke up earlier then her sister. The time was almost six, and she changed into jogging pants and a tank-top, putting a thin jacket on over. Her hair was pulled back into a ponytail, and she grabbed her i-Pod, heading outside for her morning jog. She usually woke up at this time every other day to run. It was a passion of hers. She loved to run, and was in track in high school. Doing a few warm-up exercises, she started to run. Her normal route took her through the neighborhood, on through the park, and half way towards the town square, before she backtracked to the house, the same way she came. After reaching her house, she stopped for a quick breath, turning her i-Pod off in the middle of "Move Like Jagger" by Maroon 5.

Once stable, she walked back into her house. Her parents were in the kitchen, cooking breakfast. It smelled mouth-watering to her. "Hey." She said, grabbing a bottle of water from the refrigerator, taking a huge sip. "Smells good." She commented. Her dad was sitting at the table, reading the newspaper in his plaid pajama pants, and drinking coffee. "No work today, dad?" She asked, taking another sip of the refreshing water. "No, hun. I'm off, and it's about time." He said, relieved to finally have off. He worked weeks at a time without having off, so he needed it. Nodding, Arianna smiled and finished her water, throwing it in the trash can. She went upstairs to take a shower.

"Wake up, sis." Arianna said, laughing as she threw a pillow at her sleeping sister. "Getting in the shower!" She shouted from the bathroom, running the water. This afternoon, Arianna and her sister decided to talk to their parents about taking a year away from home. They both graduated high school, and if they said no, they could always go anyways. They were over 18, but Arianna was confident that their parents would let them. Finishing her shower, Arianna dried off and went back into her bedroom to change into something more casual. She found the perfect outfit for the day- blue jean caprees, a beige top, blue flats, and black and gold bracelets.. After throwing it on, she pulled her wet hair into a messy ponytail, going downstairs to get something to eat.

Ignacio Oliver Williams

Ignacio wasn't exactly a morning person. Actually, he hated waking up any time before noon. It normally put him in a sour mood, but today, he felt a little different. He normally stayed up at the clubs in his hometown, Rome, Italy. And partied, meeting new girls every night. Safe to say, he wasn't one for "relationships"... one of his worst qualities. It was about ten that morning, and he just ate a bowl of cereal. He normally didn't eat much in the mornings. After eating, Ignacio took himself a shower, taking his sweet, sweet time. Last night, he didn't go out, but stayed home and chilled with one of his good friends, who he'd be chilling with later that day.

After his shower, he dressed in a simple dark blue tee shirt and blue jeans. He raked a hand through his hair, which made it settle in place perfectly. Smiling at himself, he winked in the mirror. He was a little bit self-conceited, but who wouldn't be, with his rugged handsome looks, and drop-dead smile, every woman in Italy wanted the young bachelor, but to their surprise, none suited him to settle with. He just figured he hadn't found the right one.

Waiting until his friend was up, Ignacio sat down on his couch, propping his legs up on the coffee table, and flipped through the channels. He knew some English, but not the whole language. After all, he was full-blooded Italian. Deciding on the news, he sat back, sipping on some coffee he made earlier before his shower.

HP redesigns its Envy laptops, announces the Envy 15, 17 and 17 3D (video)

Just last month, we off-handedly said that HP's Envy laptops were among the most shameless MacBook impersonations we've seen. Looks like we spoke too soon: the company just introduced a redesigned Envy 15, Envy 17 and Envy 17 3D, and we have to say: the interior here is just uncanny. If you ask company reps, they'll tell you the old taupe design was too masculine (despite the divets arranged in a floral pattern!), and that the new aesthetic is more gender-neutral. Fair enough, we suppose, though we defy you to tell us that touchpad, silvery aluminum chassis and black, chiclet-style keyboard aren't familiar. To be fair, it's not a complete facsimile: HP also throw in a few design flourishes of its own, most of them Beats-inspired. Chief among them is a red-accented, analog volume dial on the right side of the keyboard deck, though the black lid and thin red strip around the keyboard also add some kick.

All three laptops will be available December 7th, with the Envy 15, Envy 17 and Envy 17 3D starting at $1,100, $1,250 and $1,600, respectively. For now, though, we've got hands-on shots below, along with a rundown of the starting specs just past the break.

Clinton book argues for bigger government role in recovery (Reuters)

NEW YORK (Reuters) ? Government has a critical role in powering the U.S. economy's turnaround and preparing it to compete in the 21st century, former President Bill Clinton argues in his new book, "Back To Work: Why We Need A Smart Government For A Strong Economy."

The slim volume - the 42nd president's contribution to a growing debate about government's role in American society ahead of next year's national elections - is as much an outline for rehabilitating the economy as it is an attack on the Tea Party and what Clinton calls the "anti-government" ethos he says now pervades the Republican Party.

Clinton views Republicans' current staunch opposition to tax increases and their general disdain for government as an extreme manifestation of President Ronald Reagan's pivotal dictum that "government is the problem."

That philosophy, Clinton says, has proved disastrous, inducing rising income inequality and stagnant wages while putting the United States at a competitive disadvantage with other nations.

"The inevitable consequence of their policies is to push the pedal to the metal of the most destructive trends of the past thirty years, to increase inequality and instability, and to forfeit the future," Clinton says of anti-government "ideologues."

To support his argument, Clinton surveys the role various other governments are playing in kick-starting their economies. Singapore, for example, has created a hub for the biotechnology industry, while Germany's burgeoning solar power industry has created 300,000 jobs, he writes.

"How?" Clinton asks. "With government subsidies and targets."

Clinton finds ways for government to nudge job-creating corporations in the right direction, starting with banks.

Sweden's central bank encourages lending by charging banks a fee for holding their deposits, for example. That could work in the United States, where many banks keep deposits with the Federal Reserve at no cost, Clinton says.

"If the Fed imposed even a modest fee of one-fourth of 1 percent on bank deposits it holds, the banks might be more willing to lend so they could make, not lose, money on the cash they have," Clinton writes. "It's worth a try."

DEMOCRATS A PUZZLE

Anti-tax Republicans aren't the only focus of Clinton's criticism. His own Democratic Party is another.

He is mystified that President Barack Obama and the Democratic-led Congress didn't raise the debt ceiling in late 2010, while they still held a majority, instead subjecting themselves to bruising negotiations this year with Republicans emboldened by their mid-term elections wins.

"To the outside world, the United States looked weak and confused, completely in the grip of the anti-government zealots in the House Republican caucus," Clinton said of last summer's stalemate between Obama and Republicans that sparked a historic downgrade of the United States credit rating by Standard and Poor's on August 5.

He also faulted the Democratic National Committee for not arranging a unified message to counter the Republicans in the run-up to the 2010 mid-terms, despite what he called his own efforts and those of Vice President Joe Biden.

The two asked the DNC to distribute a centralized set of talking points "so Democratic foot soldiers would at least have some good ammunition for their phone and door-to-door campaigns," Clinton said. "We couldn't persuade the decision makers to do so."

Still, "Back To Work" won't likely satisfy Republicans seeking juicy campaign ad fodder against Obama from Clinton.

Clinton generally sympathizes with the challenges facing Obama and heartily agrees with the goals of the stimulus bill, the measures taken to stabilize the banking and automobile industries, and the president's recent jobs proposal.

"President Obama has a tough hand to play," he says.

Clinton also defends himself against criticisms that his administration's approval in 1999 of repealing key sections of the Glass-Steagall Act set the stage for the mortgage crisis that exploded almost a decade later.

Those changes broke down the barriers between investment banking and commercial banking that critics have blamed in part for the meltdown of Wall Street firms in 2008.

Since the late 1980s, Clinton writes, Federal Reserve rulings had eliminated restraints on the ability of big banks to pursue commercial and investment banking activities.

"The real problem," Clinton says, was that the Securities and Exchange Commission "lacked the authority to require investment banks to set aside more cash to cover high-risk investments ... and the bank regulators didn't do enough to limit commercial banks' risky loans."

Clinton admits he could be "fairly criticized" for not reining in financial derivatives, though he says he couldn't have done anything anyway because of Republican opposition.

"I should have spoken out more," he says. "In not doing so, I ignored one of my own rules: even when you can't win, it's best to get caught trying."

Pacquiao Goes Up Against the Man Who Nearly Beat Him Twice Before (Time.com)

Manny Pacquiao trains in a Hollywood gym called the Wild Card Boxing Club, which sits above a laundromat and a Thai restaurant in a rundown strip mall. The Filipino boxer does early morning runs in the Hollywood Hills, and then comes to the Wild Card to plot and work on strategy with his trainer and the gym's owner, Freddie Roach. For the last several weeks Pacquiao, who is also a Congressman and game show host in his native Philippines, has been preparing for Saturday megafight, his third meeting against Mexican Juan Manuel Marquez. Near the gym's speed bag is a photo of Marquez wearing a t-shirt that declares, "Marquez beat Pacquiao twice." Pacquiao sees that photo every day. It irritates him ? and gets him working.

The previous Pacquiao-Marquez bouts were controversial and close. Back in 2004, in their first meeting, the men were fighting for a featherweight (126-pound limit) title. Pacquiao knocked down Marquez three times in the first round, but the Mexican slugger popped up off the canvas each time and fought on to salvage a come-from-behind draw. In 2008 they met again for a super featherweight title (130-pound limit). It was a back-and-forth thriller, in which Pacquiao received a round two left hook to the chin that teetered him, and Marquez went down in round three, but both men were able to fight until the end. Pacquiao won the fight in a controversial split decision. (See photos of the rise of Manny Pacquiao.)

Marquez has been bitter about the conclusion since, and has been begging for a rematch. The t-shirt is his version of history.

Everyone else's history has been kinder to the Filipino fighter. Pacquiao went on to fight and vanquish other boxers, including Oscar De La Hoya, win a Congressional seat, visit President Barack Obama at the White House, get featured on a 60 Minutes segment, make a hit single ("Sometimes When We Touch"), introduce his own fragrance ("Scent of a Champion"), and sign lucrative endorsement deals with Nike, Hewlett-Packard, and Hennessy. Under the tutelage of Roach, Pacquiao kept improving as a boxer. He says that since his last fight with Marquez he has learned how to better combat counter-punching, the Mexican's specialty. Pacquiao, a southpaw, developed a devastating right hand and refined his already mesmerizingly quick footwork. (After studying film of Marquez' most recent fight, Pacquiao, who at 32 years-old is six years younger than his opponent, concluded, "He is slower than before.")

To challenge fighters in heavier weight classes and create an even larger legacy, Pacquiao spent the intervening three years adding muscle weight to increase the force of his punches. He successfully fought larger men ? one victim outweighed him by 17 pounds at fight time. He has been able to increase his power while maintaining his rabbit-like speed, and this brutal combination of speed, power, and boxing intellect have helped him win an unprecedented eight world titles in eight different weight classes (a swing of about 40 pounds), and earn the title of boxer of the decade. "I know Marquez has got off the canvas four times [from Pacquiao punches in the past], but I don't think he's going to be able to get up from the power Manny has now," says Roach.

See "Boxing Icon Manny Pacquiao Now Belts Out Love Songs."

See Manny Pacquiao's reaction to the Philippines' reproductive health bill.

Since his last meeting with Pacquiao, Marquez has fought six times, losing to Floyd Mayweather Jr. in 2009. Marquez, a naturally slight man, fights his best at around 130 pounds. In boxing, the weight classes were developed to combat physics: bigger men create more force in their punches. While Pacquiao is an exception, smaller men adding weight to compete in higher weight divisions usually run into problems because they lose quickness and struggle with the power and reach of larger framed men. When Marquez, known as "Dinamita" for his explosive counter punches, fought Mayweather he had been forced to rise two weight classes and weighed 142 pounds. He looked uncomfortable throughout the fight.

Saturday's bout ("Pacquiao-Marquez III") at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas will favor Pacquiao because it is at a welterweight catch weight of 144 pounds, near Pacquiao's ideal heft. Taking a page from Pacquiao's regimen, Marquez has spent his training camp adding muscle to his frame. He hired Angel Hernandez, a strength and conditioning coach, who put him on an intense weightlifting program. Many boxers shy away from the weight room because they feel like weightlifting techniques don't give them "functional muscles." Hernandez also raised eyebrows in the boxing community when it was reported that he supplied steroids to track stars Marion Jones and Tim Montgomery and later became the key government witness in the case against BALCO. Marquez insists, however, that he is not juiced. "Whatever testing they want to do, blood or Olympic, I am ready to do it," says the Mexican boxer. "We'll do it, no problem, as long as he does it too." (See "Where Manny Pacquiao Is the Underdog: Philippine Politics.")

Pacquiao's trainer does not have good review's for the new Marquez. Says Roach, "Marquez looks old and slow. He has gotten worse." Roach, a five-time Trainer of the Year, has trained 31 world champions. He says his fighter has developed into one of the greatest champions the world has seen and predicts that Pacquiao will knock out Marquez by round six. Roach says the fight is deeply personal to Pacquiao. "Manny's not going to be kind in this fight," says Roach. "I don't have to motivate him to knock this guy out."

Roach said training camp was more intense than normal and they were having difficulty persuading $1,000-a-week sparring partners to return everyday because Pacquiao has been inflicting so much daily punishment. Roach says Pacquiao hit one boxer so hard that the opponent's legs buckled, and the sparring mate suffered an ankle sprain.

Roach has Parkinson's disease, resulting in tremors and drop foot, but when he gets into the ring with Pacquiao, he moves fluidly and the tremors disappear when he works the mitts. It's as if the two men are making music--pat, pat, pat, pat...pat, pat, pat, pat. "That's it Manny, that's it," he says, as they work on different combinations, and footwork to counter the counter-puncher. Roach is considered a master cornerman psychologist, too. Pacquiao has been pushing himself so hard in camp to train against Marquez that Roach bent the truth during a recent session in order to get him to let up a bit. He told Pacquiao that he needed to slow down because a Mexican television station was in the gym filming and he didn't want any of the footage to be seen by Marquez. Pacquiao believed the white lie and eased up.

One day recently, as Pacquiao wrapped his own hands before a sparring session in the cramped dressing room of the Wild Card, he told me, "Marquez was screaming that he wanted this fight. That's why I train hard because, you know, I want to end this, and end the doubts." He gave a sly smile and let out a knowing giggle. Pacquiao abhors trash-talking, but Marquez had obviously gotten under his skin. Quietly, he said, "He talks too much. It's not good for a fighter to talk a lot without action. I don't talk a lot. Just action."

Specialized Immune Cells Fight Hardening Arteries

dendritic cell

Dendritic cell, image courtesy of Wikimedia Commons/Judith Behnsen, et al.

Immune cells do more than just fend off infections. When cholesterol starts building up in arteries, scavenger white blood cells known as macrophages report to the scene to start trying to digest it. These little cells, though, don?t always manage to clear the site and often end up as part of the blockade themselves. These building plaques can restrict blood flow in the artery?a precursor to a heart attack?or dislodge and wind up in the brain?leading to stroke.

Another kind of immune cell, however, seems to ward off atherosclerosis (a.k.a. hardening arteries). Dendritic cells, so-named for their long, spindly arms, coordinate immune responses, and new research shows that one subtype, known as Flt3 signaling-dependent dendritic cells, might actually be helping to cut down on the arterial buildup.

These cells, for instance, were far less prevalent in mice that had been genetically programmed to have atherosclerosis than in the hearts of healthier mice, according to the new findings, published online Thursday in Immunity. The discovery suggests that these specialized dendritic cells are helping to protect against the condition. The senior study author, Ralph Steinman of Rockefeller University, described dendritic cells in the 1970s, work for which he received the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine (but died just days before the October announcement).

The findings suggest a far more complex role for the immune system in this common cardiovascular disease, ?with one subset of [dendritic cells] providing a protective edge,? Steinman and his colleagues wrote. This preliminary research should pave the way for new possibilities for treating atherosclerosis.

Nokia GEM concept dazzles with excessive customization options, full-phone display (video)

Nokia appears to have dislodged some huge creative blockage, beginning with its decision to back a new smartphone horse. Today we get yet another concept handset, revealed at Nokia Conversations. The GEM offers up an utterly customizable appearance that doubles as the interface. Following its naming convention, the user "polishes" the appearance of the phone, constantly tweaking it to suit their needs. The full-body touchscreen could offer up advertising on the back of the phone during calls, subsidizing costs, or media sharing done with some physical gesturing. See these glittering features shine in the ethereal design video right after the break.

Papademos sworn in to lead party-packed Greek cabinet (Reuters)

ATHENS (Reuters) ? Technocrat Prime Minister Lucas Papademos took office Friday to save Greece from bankruptcy, heading a coalition cabinet filled with many of the same politicians who led the nation into crisis and pushed the euro zone to the brink of collapse.

At a colorful swearing-in ceremony, black-robed Orthodox priests, led by the Archbishop of Athens, blessed Papademos and a cabinet dominated by the two main parties which had bickered for four days before agreeing on the crisis coalition.

Apart from Papademos, a former European Central Bank vice president with no political experience, the cabinet's main new face is from the LAOS party -- the first time the far right has joined a Greek government since a military junta fell in 1974.

As politicians in Italy pushed through austerity measures and contemplated an emergency government to stave off the crisis creeping deeper into the euro zone, Papademos said his priority would be to meet the terms of the country's EU, IMF bailout and pull Greece out of recession.

"The final result will depend much on whether we succeed in stabilizing the real economy, reining in unemployment and setting the ground to revive the economy and gradually boost employment in a relatively short time," he told his governing team in its first meeting.

"That's why I would like to ask everyone to do his best in the next coming days, weeks and months."

The line-up includes Socialist party power broker Evangelos Venizelos, who keeps the post of finance minister that he held in Papandreou's government.

Analysts said Papademos -- a quiet academic economist -- had to assert his authority over a cabinet packed with the hardened conservative and Socialist party politicians who took turns in power for decades as Greece built up a huge debt it could not manage, forcing an international bailout.

"Greece has a government that is the result of political compromise among three parties. It is obvious that there was a dealing of the cards," said Costas Panagopoulos, head of ALCO pollsters. "It all now depends on how the prime minister handles them."

CLEAR MANDATE, TOUGH TASK

The interim government of national unity, which has a bumper 48 ministers and their deputies, plans to announce its platform Monday evening, then conduct a debate and win a confidence vote in parliament by early next week.

It has a clear mandate that may not be so simple to implement before it calls an early general election, tentatively agreed for February 19.

It has to push through parliament Greece's second bailout deal in as many years -- a plan that includes fighting tax evasion, selling off state companies and cutting the public sector -- to get hold of 130 billion euros ($179 billion) in long term funds.

But Athens also needs money fast from its IMF and EU lenders to meet big debt repayments due in December or face default, bankruptcy and the danger of leaving the euro zone.

Finance Minister Venizelos said securing a December aid tranche Athens needs next month would be the immediate focus.

"Our first priority is clear. It is the timely release of the 8 billion euro tranche before December 15. There is readiness for this from our partners and the IMF for this to happen on time," he said.

A source from the so-called "troika" of the EU, the IMF and the ECB said inspectors would visit Athens early next week to speak with the new government and would clear the tranche only when it pledged to meet its commitments.

Both the Socialist PASOK and the conservative New Democracy parties say they will vote for the new bailout in parliament.

However, the package demands policies and reforms which are likely to be highly unpopular as the parties prepared for the elections, expected in February at the earliest.

It stipulates yet more of the punishing austerity that will push the country into a fourth year of recession, has sent unemployment soaring to a record 18.4 percent and brought Greeks out on to the streets in sometimes violent protests.

BEST Behavior

The two main parties kept Greece in suspense for days as they argued over who should lead the coalition, with one deal to install the speaker of parliament collapsing after Papandreou announced he was handing over to a new premier.

However, even after Papademos was confirmed as prime minister, maneuvering over who got which job dragged on, with the cabinet list released only as ministers started arriving at the presidential palace to be sworn in.

Conservative Opposition leader Antonis Samaras agreed to back the new cabinet but refused to bow to pressure from Greece's lenders to buckle down on reforms.

"We are all well aware that our country has lost the last trace of decency in the last couple of days. Together we will restore it very quickly without accepting being humiliated or insulted," he said.

Far-right LAOS won their place at table of a cabinet that was supposed to include all parties. However, left-wing groups refused to participate.

On the streets of Athens, people welcomed a fresh face at least at the top, but hoped the consequences would not be too severe for a country weary of hardship.

"The measures that have already been announced will be imposed," said civil servant Yiannis Papageorgiou, 57, referring to a wave of pay and pension cuts, public sector layoffs and privatizations agreed under the bailout deal.

"But at least I hope that the new government will not take any further measures, because until now Greek workers have been the only ones who have been paying for the crisis."
