The future of health & fitness ? Harder. Better. Faster. Stronger.

Alright folks. I know I?ve been MIA for a while now but I?m not going to write a big story about how my life was super busy or how I enjoyed a great vacation forgetting to blog blah blah. The important thing is that I?m back and I promise to blog more frequently moving forward.

Let?s get practical

So in the last 6 months or so, if you realized, I haven?t written much sciency articles or anything that talks about the minutiae in nutrition and/or fitness. The reason for this is two fold.

1. Most of the important stuff about nutrition and training that applies to the health and fitness enthusiast, I?ve already covered. I?ve written about RealFood and saturated fat and grains and vegetables and protein requirements and macronutrient splits and superfoods and alcohol and overtraining and the best exercises and running and cardio and fat loss?and much more.

2. That being the case, I?m trying not to force my readers into the ?paralysis by analysis? zone. I find that there are plenty of great websites/blogs that get deeper and deeper into nutrition (and fitness) resulting in (inadvertently) confusing the reader. While analysis is uber important, for the common man and for the health & fitness enthusiast whose profession is not nutrition or health or fitness, such in-depth obsessive analysis only results in paralysis.

What I have realized in the last 6 months to a year is that people don?t succeed in moving towards a healthier fitter lifestyle, not because they don?t know what to do, but because they don?t know how to do it. Let me explain.

Real-life examples help

I have an awesome online client whose goal was to lose some fat and get healthy. She was in the heavier side to begin with and had specific weight loss goals. As you may know, the heavier the person, the more the absolute weight loss you expect to start off with. So when we started, I expected her to lose about 1 kg per week. She started and saw a kilo (~ 2lb) of weight loss in the first 2-3 weeks. This could be attributed to reduction in junk food consumption and water loss and hence not true fat loss.

As weeks went by, she kept updating me with her weight and measurements and weirdly we saw no change. No fat loss. No weight loss even. Measurements were also the same. I checked with her and she said she has been doing everything required ? eating only real food, working out per the plan, sleeping enough etc. She admitted that she had a few slips here and there but she had been sticking to the plan for 95% of the time.

This obviously, baffled me. I went back to her food log, again, and had a nice long look. It all seemed fine. When asked about how she felt otherwise, she mentioned that she saw improvements in all areas except weight and measurements. That is, her mood was better, energy levels were high, skin was better etc etc. So, clearly, RealFood was definitely doing its thing, but was not helping with fat loss.?While I asked her to wait things out and give her body the time to heal I was concerned as to why this was happening.

My next suggestion was to get her thyroid checked. She got it tested and all her numbers were kind of normal. Her TSH was a little high but nothing too crazy. Again? baffled. We had a few calls back and forth trying to figure this out and then she sent me an email saying she was going to give this plan an honest shot for the next 30 days. If things went well, that?s great. If not, this plan didn?t work for her. I agreed and she said she wouldn?t contact me until the 30 days were over.

At the end of 4 weeks, she sends me an email saying she?s lost 5 kg.

Well? how did that happen? Did we change the plan? No. Did she eat any special superfood or pills? No. Did she go out and start working out 10 times a week? No. Then how did this happen? ?Simple really. Initially, she didn?t do the plan as is. Now, in these 30 days, she did it. And why did this happen? During the initial stages, she was unaware of how to do this right and as a result did it wrong. In the last 30 days, since she set a hard deadline for herself, she was determined to find a way to do it and, well, she found a way and did it right.

What?s my point here?

Most people either take this too lightly or don?t put in enough effort to do it right. And why does this happen? Because most people are lost in the ?how to do this? zone. For example, my client, from above, would?ve been able to do this right the first time if she had better a better understanding of the ?how to? part of the concept.

To try and solve that issue, I?ve written in the past about how to create your own optimal diet and about how to design your own training plan. I?m know it helped a bunch of folks, but I still don?t think it is enough.?So, moving forward, I plan on writing a lot addressing the practical aspects of RealFood, optimal training and lifestyle changes. In other words, my future articles will focus on?

  • Sample diet plans
  • Examples of training routines that can be done with little to no equipment
  • Ways to eat RealFood when traveling
  • RealFood recipes
  • Simple non-obsessive ways to include more RealFood in your diet
  • RealFood for kids
  • RealFood for older folks
  • RealFood with little to no meat
  • Motivation

In my dictionary, sustainability is more important, MUCH more important, than anything else. If you look at RealFood as another diet to lose weight, then it will only act like another diet i.e making you skinny, weak, unhappy, irritable and eventually, fat again. The point is to make lifestyle changes.

We live in an age of information overload. The problem is not lack of information but over abundance of it. The future of health and fitness is sorting through the BS and finding a way to make sustainable lifestyle changes. And that?s exactly what I?ll be focusing on.

If you guys have any thoughts on this or any suggestions as to what you?d like addressed talk about it in the comments section and I?ll be sure to address it.

Peace out.

North Sea gas leak exclusion zone

Total's Elgin PUQ installation

Please turn on JavaScript. Media requires JavaScript to play.

The BBC understands workers were told 'this is not a drill', before being evacuated

Exclusion zones have been put in place around the Elgin platform in the North Sea, which has been suffering a serious gas leak since Sunday.

Coastguards said shipping was being ordered to keep at least two miles away and there was a three-mile exclusion zone for aircraft.

A cloud of gas was reported to be surrounding the platform, which is located 150 miles (240km) off Aberdeen.

Workers from a second platform and drilling rig have been removed.

Shell has moved 120 non-essential staff from the Shearwater platform and Hans Deul drilling rig, about four miles from the Elgin, because of the drifting gas.

The oil giant said the move was a "precautionary measure".

Emergency plan

Total, which operates the Elgin platform, said the situation was stable but it had not yet been able to identify the source of the leak.

A sheen of between two and 23 tonnes of gas condensate, and measuring six nautical miles in length, has been reported on the water nearby, and Total has activated its Oil Pollution Emergency Plan.

Jake Molloy, of the RMT union which represents offshore workers, said many had been watching the Old Firm game between Rangers and Celtic when the alarm was raised on Sunday afternoon.

He said: "Just as it finished a PA announcement went out to say everyone was to go to the muster point and this was not a drill.

"The stand-by vessel had identified the sea boiling, as it were, below the installation - suggesting there was gas coming up there and there was some kind of vapour cloud sitting on the surface of the sea."

I am guessing they are going to tackle it from beneath the surface to start with?

End Quote Dr Simon Boxall Oceanographer

David Hainsworth, health, safety and environment manager for Total E&P UK, told BBC Scotland's Good Morning Scotland programme the situation was "stable" and there had been no major change overnight.

He said: "We've been monitoring overnight. There seems to be no evolution in the rate of gas release.

"The area was over-flown twice yesterday by spotter planes to look at the sheen on the sea - that is about the same, at six nautical miles in length."

Mr Hainsworth said all the power was turned off when the platform was evacuated to minimise the risk of igniting an explosion.

He added: "Clearly there is a risk of ignition and a fire.

"We've taken away all the usual sources of ignition such as electrical power but yes there is a possibility.

"We believe it is low but you never say never."

Mr Hainsworth said they were evaluating the options for dealing with the leak.

Options include drilling a relief well - a process which could take many weeks.

Another possibility could be to carry out a "dynamic kill" - pumping heavy mud into the well to suppress the flow of gas.

Mr Hainsworth said there was a possibility that the leak could stop of its own accord.

He said: "I would say the best case scenario is that the gas is not very productive from this area and that it dies off over the coming days and weeks."

Very flammable

Dr Simon Boxall, an oceanographer at Southampton University, told BBC Scotland that this was not a deepwater drilling rig and platform but it was unusual in that they were drilling down 5km (3.1 miles) into the sea bed.

He said: "It is a very deep well. The gas they are bringing up is what we call sour gas.

"That gas has a high proportion of hydrogen sulfide and carbon dioxide and that makes it very flammable and quite poisonous.

"So the big problem they have got is dealing with a very combustible gas - unlike Deepwater Horizon where we were dealing with crude oil which ironically is very difficult to light sometimes."

Further complications

Dr Boxall said it would be tricky to get close to the leak.

"I am guessing they are going to tackle it from beneath the surface to start with," he said.

"On the one hand the Total spokesman said there was no gas bubbling through the sea and yet the observer talked about the sea boiling.

"It seems unusual that it is not bubbling through the sea and that is going to add further complications of hydrogen sulfide going into the water - certainly causing widespread poisoning in the vicinity of the rig."

Dr Boxall said it was a very focused and localised issue but one which would be very difficult to tackle.

All 238 workers were removed from the Elgin installation and the nearby Rowan Viking drilling rig by helicopter on Sunday.

Shell confirmed on Monday evening it was flying non-essential personnel back to Aberdeen from its Shearwater platform and the nearby Hans Deul drilling rig.

The UK Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC) has been monitoring the situation and said there was no indication of a risk of significant pollution to the environment.

Facebook in Japan in 2012: part 2 of 2

Do you worry making personal information public on Facebook? graph of japanese statisticsRecently, Macromill Research took a close look at the usage patterns of 500 Facebook users, a survey that revealed a number of interesting trends. As it?s quite a large survey, I?ll split it into two parts.

Demographics

Over the 16th and 17th of February 2012 500 members of the Macromill monitor group who were current users of Facebook completed a private internet-based questionnaire. 61.8% of the sample were male, 2.2% in their teens, 21.2% in their twenties, 30.6% in their thirties, 25.0% in their forties, and 21.0% aged fifty or older.

One trend that can be seen comparing with last year is that the Japanese users are less concerned about the international nature. I don?t believe one can really ascribe that shift to some change in Japanese society?s view of foreigners, but instead I think it is just a natural shift given that according to Q2, over 60% of the users joined since the start of last year, so now there are more real-life Japanese friends to find.

PFT: 10 things to? know about Tebow, Jets

    TEBOW1-articleLargeGetty Images

Much can be said about the trade that sent Tim Tebow from the Broncos to, of all teams, the New York Jets.? Actually, much already has been said.? And much more will be said.

And much will continue to be said for as long as Tebow is a member of the team.

So why not say some stuff about it right now?? I thought about coming up with 18 takes in honor of Frank Tripucka, but it?s late and I?m tired and if I start doing 18 takes for one thing then I need to do 18 takes for everything because I?m weird that way.? Actually, I?m weird in a lot of ways.

But not nearly as weird as the trade that sent Tim Tebow from the Broncos to, of all teams, the New York Jets.

1.? How?s this for a sense of urgency, Mark?

The Jets know that Mark Sanchez can, in the right situation, perform at a high level.? After all, he won four road playoff games in his first two NFL seasons.? But they can?t duplicate that sense of urgency during the regular season.

What better way to light a fire under his rear end than to bring the hottest name in the NFL to the Big Apple?

The Jets can claim that Tebow is the backup, and for now he is.? But once Sanchez starts throwing interceptions, the chants of ?Tebow? at MetLife Stadium will be so loud that they?ll hear them all the way back in Denver.

So it?s Sanchez?s job to lose.? And plenty of people fully expect him to eventually lose it.

    2.? Introducing the T-Bone Offense.

Until Tebow becomes the full-time quarterback, he?ll be used in a version of the Wildcat package based on the things that worked best for him in Denver last year ? the read-option, the traditional option, and the unexpected fake handoff followed by a long pass to a receiver sprinting down the field in single coverage because nine guys are at the line of scrimmage trying to stop the run.

While Sanchez will be the starter and Tebow will be the backup, the T-Bone Offense will be the offense Tebow runs whenever he?s on the field ? whether it?s a surprise change of pace or Sanchez is injured or Sanchez is ineffective or it?s not a surprise change of pace after all but a regular appearance.

The starter is the guy who takes the field on the first offensive play of the game.? So while Sanchez will (for now) have that role, Tebow will be used as much as the coaching staff chooses ? and if he?s as effective for the Jets as he was against the Jets and against offensive coordinator Tony Sparano?s Dolphins last year, we may see Tebow far more often than we ever saw Brad Smith, even if Tebow technically is the backup.

3.? Somewhere, Bill Belichick is smiling.

Everything the Jets do seems to be motivated by a desire to one-up the Patriots in their own division or the Giants in their own backyard.? In this case, New England coach Bill Belichick has to be hoping that Tebow will become the starter before the first time the Pats and Jets play in 2012.

Last year, Belichick outscored Tebow?s Broncos 86-33.? And so it?s fair to say that Belichick, even with an undermanned defense in 2012, has figured out how to stop Tebow.

Count on Belichick doing more of the same in 2012.

    4.? Jets barely avoid disaster.

Some Jets fans would say that the only thing worse than the team announcing that they?re trading for Tebow is the Jets announcing it twice.? But in that strange period of limbo on Wednesday, it looked like the Jets? failure to read Tebow?s contract would scuttle the trade because of salary advances paid by the Broncos that needed to be repaid by the Jets.

Failure to close the deal would have triggered a firestorm of criticism in New York.? Yes, there will already be plenty of criticism.? But it would have been much, much worse if the Jets had wanted him and then failed to get him because of negligence in the review of the documents.

    5.? The ultimate Odd Couple.

When Peyton Manning supposedly was considering the Jets (you know, back before the Jets ?passed? on him), I said that Manning and Rex Ryan would be the ultimate odd couple.

    I was wrong.

Rex and Tim Tebow make Felix Unger and Oscar Madison look like Bert and Ernie.

Sure, Tebow and his Buddy the Elf demeanor will always say and do the right things, enthusiastically.? On Wednesday night, for example, he casually brushed off the fact that Rex has a penchant for dropping ?F? bombs.

But that doesn?t mean Rex will be as comfortable being Rex in the presence of Tebow.? And if Rex tries to change the way he is because he?s concerned he?ll make Tebow uncomfortable, Rex will be uncomfortable, and things could get even weirder than they otherwise would be.

Then again, they can always break the tension with a gosh darn snack.

    6.? Hard Knocks, Part II.

Speaking of gosh darn snacks, don?t the Jets now become the odds-on favorites for another season of Hard Knocks?

With Tebow and Santonio and Sanchez and Rex and Cromartie and the Incredible Hulk and all the other characters in that organization, a return visit would make the Jets an even bigger national attraction.

And it would be easy to justify.? Tebow said Wednesday night that he became a fan of Rex Ryan by watching Hard Knocks two years ago.

If Rex?s antics can attract Tebow, they can attract anyone.

    7.? Santonio won?t be happy.

Speaking of Santonio, if he didn?t like the amount of balls flying his way with Sanchez last year, he?ll absolutely hate it when Tebow starts sailing the ball over Holmes? head or, possibly, not throwing it at all.

That?s the major flaw in the Jets? Tebow-driven renewed commitment to the ?ground and pound? offense.? They?ve decided to keep Santonio around for another year, which means they owe him millions in guaranteed money both this year and next year.? Which means that unless they trade him to, say, the Broncos, they need to find a way to keep him happy.

He won?t be happy playing with Tebow.

8.? Woody?s words look even more ridiculous.

Last week, Jets owner Woody Johnson claimed, presumably with a straight face, that the Jets ?passed? on Peyton Manning.

So they passed on Peyton, but they fell all over themselves to get Tebow?

No one believed Johnson when he said what he said about Manning.? Even fewer believe him now, if that?s even possible.

Then again, given the events in the NFL from the past few days, anything is possible.

9.? Tebowmania may not translate to Broadway.

There?s a presumption that any team for which Tebow plays will inspire legions of Tebowmaniacs.? But Jets fans hardly are sheep.? And regardless of whether the Tebow approach is genuine or phony, Jets fans will be far more likely to assume that it?s an Eddie Haskell routine.

Regardless, few Jets fans seem prepared to assume that Tebow can walk on the Hudson River.? In New York, he?ll attract more cynicism and attention and criticism than he ever imagined.

It?s unlikely that any of it will change him, but he ultimately may wish he?d been shipped home to Jacksonville.

10.? The Jaguars could still be his destiny.

In Jacksonville, the owner wanted him but the football operation was at best ambivalent.? In New York, the coaching staff and the front office were on the same page.

Eventually, if change comes in New York, Tebow could once again be out on his ear.

And Shad Khan will still be the owner of the Jaguars.? And he?ll still want to get the tarps off the seats at EverBank Field.

And he?ll still be interested in bringing Tebow home.

It?s hard not to think that?s exactly how this eventually will end.? Even though the Jags didn?t get him now, chances are they?ll get him later.

Or, depending on how the next season or two unfold, sooner.

Chicago?s Pilsen Neighborhood, Illinois (Images of America Series)

    $21.99

For nearly 150 years, Pilsen has been a port of entry for thousands of immigrants. Mexicans, Czechs, Poles, Lithuanians, Croatians, and Germans are some of the ethnic groups who passed through this ?Ellis Island? on Chicago?s Near Westside. Early generations came searching for work and found plenty of jobs in the lumber mills, breweries, family-run shops and large factories that took root here. Today most jobs exist outside of Pilsen, but the neighborhood is still home to a loyal population. Pilsen is compact but abounds with close-knit families, elaborate churches, mom-and-pop stores, and sturdy brick homes. Nearly 200 photographs from libraries, personal scrapbooks, and museums provide the evidence. Some notable people who walked the streets of Pilsen include Anton Cermak, Amalia Mendoza, George Hallas, Cesar Chavez, Judy Barr Topinka, and Stuart Dybek. Today the Pilsen schools are nurturing another generation of artists, athletes, and activists. Many Chicagoans and tourists from outside the city are rediscovering this colorful and historic neighborhood. Let this history book serve as their guide.

Children's Nature: The Rise of the American Summer Camp

Children?s Nature: The Rise of the American Summer Camp

    $24

For over a century, summer camps have provided many American children's first experience of community beyond their immediate family and neighborhoods. Each summer, children experience the pain of homesickness, learn to swim, and sit around campfires at night.Children's Nature chronicles the history of the American summer camp, from its invention in the late nineteenth century through its rise in the first four decades of the twentieth century. Leslie Paris investigates how camps came to matter so greatly to so many Americans, while providing a window onto the experiences of the children who attended them and the aspirations of the adults who created them.Summer camps helped cement the notion of childhood as a time apart, at once protected and playful. Camp leaders promised that campers would be physically and morally invigorated by fresh mountain air, simple food, daily swimming, and group living, and thus better fit for the year to come. But camps were important as well because children delighted in them, helped to shape them, and felt transformed by them. Focusing primarily on the northeast, where camps were first founded and the industry grew most extensively, and drawing on a range of sources including camp films, amateur performances, brochures, oral histories, letters home, industry journals, camp newspapers, and scrapbooks, Children's Nature brings this special and emotionally resonant world to life.

Extravaganza King: Robert Barnet and Boston Musical Theater

Extravaganza King: Robert Barnet and Boston Musical Theater

    $1.47

This is the entertaining tale of Robert Barnet (1853?1933), a prosperous Boston sugar merchant, and the enormously popular musical theatricals he wrote and produced for the First Corps of Cadets, a volunteer militia of young upper-class Boston businessmen who sought money to build an armory as protection against feared immigrant uprisings. Barnet had already made a name for himself in local amateur theater circles when the Corps hired the middle-aged father of five to stage fund-raisers to erect the armory, known today as the Park Plaza Castle. Dubbed the ?Extravaganza King? for his ever more elaborate productions, held annually in Boston from 1891 to 1906, Barnet almost single-handedly managed the lavish musical farces and Mother Goose burlesques, acting as librettist, director, stage manager, and costume designer. The male cadets, including several Harvard graduates trained in the Hasty Pudding tradition, played all of the roles in these overblown affairs, and Barnet himself starred as Queen Isabella of Spain in 1492, his most famous work. Donning dresses and wigs for the female parts, the hefty, muscular leading ladies raised laughter rather than eyebrows from the audiences of prominent Bostonians who attended the shows. In this lively and light-hearted account, Barnet?s great-granddaughter, Anne Alison Barnet, reclaims the little known story of the Cadet Theatricals and the creative force behind the huge productions, many of which later toured the country and had Broadway runs. Drawing on a trove of photographs, scrapbooks, and family memorabilia, she traces Barnet?s life and the colorful history of the Cadet shows. While Barnet gained national fame for his long run of successes in Boston, his fortunes reversed after moving in 1908 to New York City, where he failed to adapt his talents to evolving musical theater tastes and fell into professional obscurity. Barnet?s captivating book transports the reader back to the turn of the last century, a

A comprehensive, fascinating treasure trove of American common sense and whimsy, <I>The Words We Live By</I> presents a sentimental rediscovery of a lost era in American history. From fraternal loyalty oaths to marriage vows, corporate mottoes to monument inscriptions, Ben Franklin to Henry Ford, Americans for generations have committed their most cherished ideals to print, often in charming and plain-spoken language that perfectly represents our provincial, pragmatic, and romantic national character.<P>Burrell?s work was inspired by his father, an obsessive collector of words and a chronic nostalgia buff who traveled widely with his family, introducing them to the landmarks, monuments, and other symbols of America?s past. Throughout his life, he clipped or wrote down memorable phrases, quotes, mottoes, and quips, both the silly and the profound, the playful and the maudlin. Burrell has lovingly compiled his father?s collection of scrapbooks, complementing them with extraordinary research into the origins of America?s civic ethics, to produce a truly memorable and inspirational work of historical reference. More than just a compendium of classic American wit and wisdom, The Words We Live By brings this material to life with poignantly told stories, forgotten anecdotes, and deeply considered meditations on the meaning of the words that have shaped the American nation.

At one time, this nation held a profound and simple faith in the power of words. Today we have become so engulfed in public cynicism that the whole notion of ?words to live by? seems to us impossibly naive. Brian Burrell?s splendid collection shows that many of the phrases we once lived by can still have resonance today. A comprehensive, fascinating treasure trove of American common sense and whimsy, The Words We Live By presents a sentimental rediscovery of a lost era in American history. From fraternal loyalty oaths to marriage vows, corporate mottoes to monument inscriptions, Ben Franklin to Henry Ford, Americans for generations have committed their most cherished ideals to print, often in charming and plain-spoken language that perfectly represents our provincial, pragmatic, and romantic national character. Burrell?s work was inspired by his father, an obsessive collector of words and a chronic nostalgia buff who traveled widely with his family, introducing them to the landmarks, monuments, and other symbols of America?s past. Throughout his life, he clipped or wrote down memorable phrases, quotes, mottoes, and quips, both the silly and the profound, the playful and the maudlin. When I first decided to compile a Chronicle of Pittsburgh?s Children personalities of the fifties and sixties, I looked forward to a fun time of assembling and putting in order all materials supplied from those who are included in the publication my search soon turned into frustration and disappointment. I discovered that TV stations decided that space was more important than TV History?I learned that thousands of photographs were trashed and tossed into dumpsters because stations needed space.I have often been asked why the stations didn?t replay some of the old shows on the air?. Adventure time with Paul Shannon, ?Funsville?or Popeye ?and Knish, or ?Happy?s Party?.How about episodes of Ricki& Copper? or Junior High Quiz.?Fat Chance !Because, the stations dumped the tapes and films of those programs,They got discarded -destroyed- thrown away, trashed! Stations dumped TV history because they said they said they needed the space. Some shows were on two inch Ampex tape, that took a lot of shelf space . and the machines to play those tapes were also discarded because they became obsolete.Today, You can get hours of information on a CD that you could stuff in your back pocket ..Those pinheads running TV didn?t have the sense to save and store history,. How simple it would beto edit and broadcast again. Those shows made Thousands of dollars in sales for the stations, And could do it again . Simple editing of old shows would be a delight and so simple;?TV Land ? re-runssuch shows as ?Redd Fox, All in the family,? and other popular shows.?Rifleman?, ?Bonanza? ?Little house on the prairie.?Wonder how those shows are stored..?.Many of the included photos of Children?s TVpersonalities of were supplied by the people themselves from their own personal files and scrapbooks. Personal gratitude goes to Jean Connelly, Don Riggs, Ricki Wertz, and David Newell of Family Communications at WQED-TV, also Delores Ellenberg of the Carnegie Museum of Pittsburgh. their
