Can You Have A Meaningful Career And Still Be A Great Mother ...

?

?

We recently celebrated another Mother?s Day, and we showered the mother figures in our lives with our appreciation for everything that they?ve done for us. From moms, grandmas, aunts, big mamas, and all the wonderful ladies in between, we recognized the sacrifices they gave in order to make us the people we are today. For some women, being a mother comes natural. It?s all they wanted to do in life and they?re amazing at it. For other ladies, making the decision to share your body with another human being for 9 months, and then being responsible for them for at least the next 18 years is more than they?d like to bargain for. So is it possible to have a meaningful career and still be a great mother?

Black Enterprise interviewed several professional women about child bearing, life balance and family planning choices. 33-year-old Summer Alexander became a mom at 17, and went from high school drop out to college graduate and mom-preneur.

Being home was a breath of fresh air because I?m passionate about my children. I kept my mind active by being in school, and the energy of my household changed from one of the same day-to-day routine to a much more peaceful environment. My children were and still are happy to have me at home. Also by the time I when back to school and was starting my business, I was married and had just recently given birth to our son who has never attended daycare.

35-year-old Deanna Kimberly Burell is enjoying life as a single entrepreneur and author, but has felt the pressure to have a child since her ?clock is ticking.? Deanna is standing by her decision to wait until the timing is right.

I would say that I made a conscious decision that I did not want to enter into motherhood as a single mother. I have the utmost respect for all single mothers because being the primarily caregiver is a lot of work. Personally, I decided that raising a child in a one-parent household is not the kind of responsibility that I can handle. I want to raise my child like I was raised: with two loving parents in the household. Until I find a man that I want to marry and have a child with, I decided instead to focus on succeeding at my career.

28-year-old divorced mom of three, Jennifer K. Davis, handles most of her business while her children are at school, but as many moms know, sometimes your kids? needs intertwine with mommy?s work time.

Whenever I had business meetings or phone calls, I would conduct them while my kids were at school, but if business was on the weekend, I brought my children along. I?d tell everyone, up front, that I?m a single mother trying to make this happen, so from time to time I might bring my child with me or you might hear a scream for ?Mommy? in the background. Most of the people I came in contact with were very supportive, very empathetic and understood and loved my passion.

51-year-old entrepreneur Jill Williams is no stranger to sacrifice. In order to provide for her daughter, sometimes she had to miss out on events in order to earn extra money.

I think my biggest challenge of balancing my daughter?s needs while pursuing my career was missing out on events that were important to her. She was a cheerleader in high school, and I missed many of her games. You can?t imagine the guilt I felt, but I had to keep a roof over our heads.

So can you have it all? It depends on your situation. What?s your situation like? Are you a SAHM, a woman who has a 9-5 and also holds the full time position as mom, or are you waiting to build your family after your career goals are met?

Study: Twitter Sentiment Mirrored Facebook?s Stock Price Today

datasift_suitcaseFacebook's IPO was obviously the single most discussed topic on Twitter today. The good folks over at social media data platform DataSift monitored what Twitter users were saying about the IPO throughout the day and came up with some interesting conclusions. Turns out, the ups and down of how Twitter's users felt about the stock pretty much mirrored the price of Facebook's stock as the day progressed.

Advice to would-be Romney running mates: Run for the hills

Nothing is easier to mock in politics right now than the apparent reluctance of leading Republicans to sign on as Mitt Romney?s second banana. A few weeks ago, Jon Stewart summarized the way that Rob Portman was plugging his Senate colleague Marco Rubio, who in turn was passing the baton to Jeb Bush, with the line, ?Doesn?t anyone want the rock in crunch time??

Since naked ambition is the only bipartisan trait left in politics, however, no one takes these sorts of demurrals seriously. When someone like former primary candidate Tim Pawlenty says ?Take my name off the list? for the umpteenth time, everyone assumes that he is merely trying to protect himself from the embarrassment of a high-profile rejection. (In his case, the Iowa Straw Poll was bad enough.)

But what if all these Romney refusniks are actually telling the truth? What if they made a rational calculation and concluded that the upside--sharing the history books with Spiro Agnew, seats at the best international funerals--is not worth the cost if Romney loses in the fall? We could hardly blame them. The modern history of what happens to losing vice presidential nominees is enough to make any politician recoil in horror.

Since 1972, there are eight people in this camp. (There have been ten elections, but two of the losing running mates?Walter Mondale and Dan Quayle?were sitting vice presidents who were voted out of office.) Exactly one of them, Lloyd Bentsen, who ran with Michael Dukakis in 1988, had his reputation burnished by the experience. Nearly all the others would have been much better off had they turned down the invitation.

(And we are not even counting Admiral James Stockdale, Ross Perot?s 1992 running mate. Ill-prepared for the national spotlight, Stockdale began his opening statement in the vice-presidential debate with the seemingly puzzled words, ?Who am I? Why am I here?? And that was how a cerebral man who had won the Medal of Honor for his bravery as a Vietnam POW became a national laughingstock.)

Running for vice president is one of the most arduous character tests in political life. The lucky nominees suddenly find themselves with entourages, motorcades, adoring crowds, and Secret Service protection without having had to earn it by winning primaries. It?s a challenge to anyone?s sense of proportion. At the same time, this ego-driven politician has to work with a borrowed (and sometimes disloyal) staff and is hamstrung by instructions never to overshadow the real candidate. Here is how the last eight losing nominees for the Throttlebottom job have measured up:

Tom Eagleton (1972)
The 1972 Democratic Convention was a portrait in chaos, especially when it came to George McGovern?s choice of a running mate. After Ted Kennedy turned him down, McGovern tapped his Senate colleague Eagleton, asking him only an open-ended question about skeletons in the closet. Eagleton neglected to mention a Halloween-like detail -- he had been hospitalized for depression and received electro-shock treatments. When the story broke after the convention, McGovern stood behind Eagleton ?one-thousand percent? until he did the political math and bounced him from the ticket.

Sargeant Shriver, Ted Kennedy?s brother-in-law, was the good-soldier replacement candidate nominated by the Democratic National Committee. Being part of the McGovern debacle was not an ideal launching pad. When Shriver sought the presidency himself in 1976, his candidacy effectively died when he finished fifth with 3 percent of the vote in the Iowa caucuses.

Bob Dole (1976)
Confident that he could wing it in the first vice-presidential debate against Democrat Walter Mondale, Dole disregarded the briefing books prepared by Gerald Ford?s staff and went for the one-liners. The problem was that one of Dole?s ad-libbed riffs was about totaling up the number of soldiers killed in ?Democrat wars? from World War I to Vietnam. It took Dole years to recover from the resulting hatchet-man reputation. As Dole said ruefully after Ford lost, ?They told me to go for the jugular ? so I did. It was mine.?

Geraldine Ferraro (1984)
A prot?g? of House Speaker Tip O?Neill, Ferraro probably would have become a congressional power player if Walter Mondale had not tapped her as the first woman on a national ticket. Instead, Ferraro became another case study in inadequate running mate vetting. The murky real-estate dealings of her husband, John Zaccaro, provoked a media firestorm that partially obscured the historic significance of her nomination. Ferraro never fully recovered politically, losing two subsequent Senate primaries in New York.

Lloyd Bentsen (1988)
Bentsen delivered one of most withering putdowns in political history when he said to the youthful Dan Quayle in the vice-presidential debate: ?I knew Jack Kennedy. Jack Kennedy was a friend of mine. Senator, you?re no Jack Kennedy.? Bentsen was able to simultaneously run for reelection to the Senate from Texas while also campaigning with Michael Dukakis for vice president. Senator Bentsen ran 1.7 million votes ahead of would-be Vice President Bentsen, conclusively proving the non-existence of bottom-of-the-ticket coattails. Running with Dukakis burnished Bentsen?s reputation nationally, which helped him become Bill Clinton?s first Treasury secretary.

Jack Kemp (1996)
Put on the Republican ticket in 1996 mostly to convince the GOP base that presidential nominee Bob Dole was a supply-side tax-cutter at heart, Kemp was pretty much a neutral factor in his final campaign for public office. Having already run for president in 1988, Kemp proved that a politician in the post-ambition phase of his career can survive as a losing VP candidate.

Joe Lieberman (2000)
Just a few hanging chads away from the vice-presidential mansion on Massachusetts Avenue, Lieberman descended in six years from Al Gore?s running mate to persona non grata in the Democratic Party. The reasons why Lieberman lost the 2006 Senate Democratic primary are complex, but one of them was that he stopped coming home to Connecticut regularly and explaining his hawkish foreign-policy views after he became a national figure. Lieberman offers the first (and mildest) recorded case of Vice-Presidential Ego Syndrome.

John Edwards (2004)
With his trial over alleged election-law violations now in the hands of? the jury, we can reflect on two possibilities for Edwards: That he was a fraud when John Kerry put him on the ticket, or that the vice-presidential experience brought out all the worst qualities of this political narcissist. Either way, Edwards represents the road that no one in politics wants to follow.

Sarah Palin (2008)

If the point of running for vice president and losing is to become rich and famous, then Sarah Palin is a star-spangled success story. If, however, having a serious career in politics was her goal, Palin erred in preferring reality-show politics to statesmanship.

What a rogue?s gallery of veep creeps. Portman, Rubio or anyone else on the supposed Romney short list might consider losing their cell phones and abandoning their BlackBerries. To be extra safe, they may want to embark on lengthy fact-finding tours of Outer Mongolia that take them off the grid through September. Judging from history, the prudent course clearly is to go missing from Mitt.

Excellent Information To Help You Become A Better Money Manager

A good money saving tip is setting up automatic payments from your main checking account and have that go into a savings account which pays a higher interest. At first you may not like doing this, but after a while it will seem like another bill you have to pay. This will allow you to save quite a bit in a short period of time.

Try buying the generic brand of food. In most cases, store brand products are virtually identical to costlier name brand versions. They often contain very similar ingredients but the fillers, fragrances and packaging may vary. Don?t shy away from these foods because they don?t have marketing muscle behind them. Giving them a try could save you 15% on your grocery bill.

If you want to keep your personal finances on track, you should work to pay your bills early every month. Make sure to budget for each expense so that you can still save some money at the end of the month. Also, if you ever run into unexpected expenses, you wont have to worry when it comes to paying your bills right away.

If you are thinking about moving for a new job, consider that a higher salary offered might just be reflecting a higher standard or cost of living in that community. Look into housing costs, groceries, entertainment and other things before making a decision.

To make sure you don?t spend too much and waste your saving, allow yourself an allowance for incidentals. You can buy video games, books, whatever you like, but when you run out, the spending stops there, no extra! This is a good way to avoid overspending on items you do not really need while staying happy.

Make sure that you do not become overwhelmed with credit cards as this can lead to a lot of stress and anxiety. If you are extended more credit than is optimal, your overall credit rating will suffer and that costs you money through boosted interest rates.

If you are frequently around a zero balance, it can be helpful to have an overdraft program. An overdraft protection plan may charge a small fee, but considering that overdraft fees can cost you upwards of twenty dollars each, it is well worth the security.

Instead of trying to raise money to make a large purchase, consider enlisting the financial support of family members. Pooling resources to make a purchase for the entire family, can help everyone save some cash.

If you are thinking about getting a car or home, it is crucial to have a good credit score. Options to improving your credit include taking out a small loan then paying it back as soon as possible, or getting a couple of credits and making monthly payments on time. Also, if you can, make payments on your bills that are higher than the minimum required.

Pay attention to world financial news. You need to know about global market trends. It?s common for people to ignore news outside their own country, but when it comes to currency trading, this is a bad idea. Knowing what the world is doing right now will help you to come up with a better strategy and will help you to better understand the market.

You need to resolve debt problems if you want to fix your credit problems. This is the first step towards credit repair. It all starts with making essential cutbacks, so you can afford bigger payments to your creditors. Go out to eat and part less to save some greenbacks. Taking your own lunch to work and not eating out on weekends can save you a lot of money. If you?re serious about repairing your credit, you?ll have to commit to reducing your spending.

Pay off all of your debt! This can be done, though people often need to try different strategies before they find one that works for them. Slowly get rid of debt, and don?t accumulate anymore! Keep working constantly, and you are going to be debt free and financially free.

If you have been using credit cards for emergency purposes, it would be a good idea to establish an emergency fund to use instead. Then you can proceed to work on your credit card debt. In determining an appropriate reserve amount, consider what sorts of events often require substantial outlays of money, including dental or medical emergencies, car repairs and household maintenance issues.

Bad financial decisions put a lot of people in tough situations. You?ll be less and less concerned the more you apply what you?ve learned from this article. Apply the above tips so that you can reduce your financial stress, and get clsoer to a debt-free life.

Cate Edwards to Testify at Father's Trial

John Edwards' daughter, Cate Edwards, is expected to testify Tuesday in the former U.S. senator and presidential candidate's ongoing corruption trial.

Cate Edwards would be the first family member to do so.

The indicted politician's daughter, 30, broke down in tears and had to leave the courtroom earlier this month amid revelations of Edwards' misdeeds.

Her mother, Elizabeth, passed away in December 2010.

The defense began laying out its case Monday, shifting the focus from Edwards' affair with Rielle Hunter to the specifics of campaign finance law.

Judge Catherine Eagles threw out most of the proposed testimony from former Federal Election Commission Chairman Scott Thomas after prosecutors objected, arguing his opinions and past FEC rulings are irrelevant to the case.

Eagles sent the jury home as Thomas previewed his testimony, saying the use of nearly $1 million to cover up Edwards' affair with Hunter wasn't illegal.

Thomas said in his opinion, "This is a clear-cut case that the payments were not campaign contributions," and thus, did not have to be reported as such.

Even before Edwards was indicted last June, Thomas wrote in a letter that the "payments would not be considered to be ... campaign contributions."

The "payments did not constitute a violation of the law," he said.

But the judge ruled that information would be inadmissible. Edwards attorney, Abbe Lowe, protested, telling her he thought her decision might constitute a "reversible error" that potentially could be overturned on appeal.

Eagles retorted, "That sounds like you are arguing with me."

Earlier Monday, the jury did hear from Lora Haggard, the chief finance officer for Edwards' 2008 campaign for the Democratic presidential nomination.

From the stand, she said she never thought the money from wealthy donors Bunny Mellon and Fred Baron ever had to be reported to the FEC.

She said of the money that has him facing jail time, "They were not contributions to the campaign to urge the public to vote for Mr. Edwards."

Prosecutors say it absolutely was, as Elizabeth knew he was having an affair with Rielle Hunter and the funds were to conceal the affair from the public, thus protecting his image in the midst of a serious White House run.

It's still unclear whether Edwards himself will testify, but Cate has been by his side daily, and she could take the stand as early as today.

The Union of California Taxpayers - Its About Time to Flex Our Muscle

by Jack Lee

jerry435.jpg@!#$%* Governor Brown! What the @!#$# is wrong with you? Why is it... that it always comes down to RAISING our taxes or face cuts to schools and public safety? WHY? WHY? WHY? Why can't you do what we've been asking you to do for years, cut the waste, fraud and abuse! Learn to live within your means just like we do every day!

I can't believe it - this is sheer madness - are you idiots in Sacramento completely deaf to the shrieks and screams from us taxpayers? Every democrat legislator is repeating the same old crapola and I am fed up...raise taxes or face severe cuts in schools and safety! I would think every decent, half-way intelligent democrat would be ashamed of their representation at this point.

It's time ALL taxpayers of this state demand a full accounting by an independent auditing office.

Let's find out where the money is being wasted and fix it!!!! If we're really that broke the State should file bankruptcy, then declare every labor contract null and void. This would be a wholesale salary realignment to pay state salaries in line with the public sector. Prison guards shouldn't be earning a $100k with benenfits!!! This is nuts!

The prison guard union also known as the California Correctional Peace Officers Association (CCPOA) shouldn't be the wealthiest and most influential state employees union. That's wrong and they have extorted their way to salaries above and beyond most sworn officers who are peace officers 24/7, not just while they are on duty. But, I don't want to just single out the CCPOA, they're just one of many entities that have the California taxpayer paying out the kazoo.

The State has been caving in to unions for well over 20 year,s to the point the state employees are among the best paid in the country and virtually exceed private sector salaries at every level. That's not sustainable! Spending our tax dollars like drunks with a credit card is not sustainable either! C'mon Jerry, you and your minions better get on the stick and fix things or we're coming down there and fix you!

If it takes a big, powerful union to get through to our legislators, and it certainly appears it does... then maybe its time we call ourselves a [union] of taxpayers! Maybe we need to march on Sacramento and threaten to go on strike! Hold a picket line, shut down the Capital. Think we will have their full and undivided attention then?

The state legislature has been on a lavish spending spree for too long and it's time we tear up their credit card and put them on a budget. Whatever it takes at this point I am for it!

Our DIY Mother's Day Tea | the Creative Paige

May, 15, 2012 by paige

My husband?s family has started a tradition the last few years of having a Mother?s Day Tea for all of the ladies in our family. This was the 3rd year that we?ve had it and I was so excited to be able to fly to Denver to be a part of it. My Mother-in-law hosted the tea at her house and I was able to help her out with lots of DIY projects to make the tea extra special.

The theme of the tea party was ?pansies?, so we were all about flowers, flowers and more flowers. We had some terra cota pots that we wanted to use ? so we spray painted the bottom of them with chalkboard paint and wrote each ladies? name on the pot. They were able to take home their own pot with a pansy in it.

Mason Jar Salad, cloth napkin, Scone in a Pot & Name Card

Each lady also had a basket at their place setting (wire baskets from Dollar Tree). The baskets were filled with a cloth napkin, a mason jar salad (inspired by Pinterest) and a flowerpot scone. I didn?t get a great picture of the scone, but you can see it in the basket. The scones were absolutely delicious and baked really well in the pot.

Flowerpot Scones ? How to

1. Soak the pots in water for 30+ minutes

2. Find your favorite scone recipe. (We used this incredible cream scone recipe from Savory Sweet Life)

3. Spray the pot with non-stick spray.

4. Drop the dough into the pot. They don?t raise very much so don?t be afraid to fill them pretty close to the top.

5. Bake as directed by the recipe, but expect that it will take 10-15 minutes longer. Watch to see when the top is slightly golden.

6. Serve with Devonshire Cream and preserve.

?

Oh, and we drank tea. You have to drink tea at a tea party, but it?s really all about the food. And we ate. a lot. of. food.
