Samsung pegs LTE Galaxy S III for South Korea in July, quadcore quite possibly intact

Remember that dream version of the Galaxy S III that melded the Exynos 4 Quad, LTE-based 4G and 2GB of RAM all in one ultimate device? It now looks much closer to reality. Just as the 3G version is landing on the country's shores through SK Telecom, Samsung is sending word that the Korean LTE version is due in early July -- and Chosun claims it should have the best of all worlds in terms of performance. There should even be DMB TV tuning and a 500-title Video Hub for local movie lovers. We're anxious about just what that combination could do to battery life and the price, neither of which were mentioned up front. There may be good reasons why the US versions run on the dual-core Snapdragon S4, after all. Still, if the Korean LTE version doesn't have to make any sacrifices and is just a few weeks away from stores, it'll be hard not to turn a deep shade of green watching our friends in Seoul get what could easily be the better deal.

Update: The company has since piped up and confirmed to The Verge that the Korean LTE version is, in fact, quad-core. The LTE sits on a discrete modem chip where it's normally more tightly integrated on the Snapdragon, however -- and that means a potential knock against the runtime given that the 2,100mAh battery hasn't been beefed up.

Biodegradable artery graft will enhance bypass surgeries

ScienceDaily (June 24, 2012) ? With the University of Pittsburgh's development of a cell-free, biodegradable artery graft comes a potentially transformative change in coronary artery bypass surgeries: Within 90 days after surgery, the patient will have a regenerated artery with no trace of synthetic graft materials left in the body.

Research published online June 24 in Nature Medicine highlights work led by principal investigator Yadong Wang, a professor in Pitt's Swanson School of Engineering and School of Medicine's Department of Surgery, who designed grafts that fully harness the body's regenerative capacity. This new approach is a philosophical shift from the predominant cell-centered approaches in tissue engineering of blood vessels.

"The host site, the artery in this case, is an excellent source of cells and provides a very efficient growth environment," said Wang. "This is what inspired us to skip the cell culture altogether and create these cell-free synthetic grafts."

Wang and fellow researchers, Wei Wu, a former Pitt postdoctoral associate (now a postdoctoral associate at Yale University), and Robert Allen, a PhD student in bioengineering, designed the graft with three properties in mind. First, they chose a graft material -- an elastic polymer called PGS -- that is resorbed quickly by the body. Then, they examined graft porosity and selected parameters that allow immediate cell infiltration. Wang's team borrowed a procedure developed by another team of Pitt researchers -- David Vorp, professor of bioengineering and surgery, and William R. Wagner, interim director of the University's McGowan Institute for Regenerative Medicine and a Pitt professor of surgery, bioengineering, and chemical engineering -- wrapping the vascular graft with a fibrous sheath to trap the cells. Finally, Wang and his fellow researchers wanted a coating for the grafts that would reduces blood clotting and bind many growth factors, so they used heparin, a molecule that does just that.

"The results were porous grafts that are suturable," said Wang. "And the rapid remodeling of the grafts led to strong and compliant new arteries. The extent of the changes in the grafts that occurred in just 90 days was remarkable."

Wang and his colleagues made grafts as small as 1 mm in diameter and monitored the graft's transformation in vivo for three months. Because the graft was highly porous, cells were easily able to penetrate the graft wall, and mononuclear cells occupied many of the pores within three days. Within 14 days, smooth muscle cells -- an important blood vessel builder -- appeared. At 28 days, cells were distributed more evenly throughout the graft. At 90 days, most inflammatory cells were gone, which correlated with the disappearance of the graft materials. The artery was regenerated in situ and pulsed in sync with the host. Furthermore, the composition and properties of the new arteries are nearly the same as native arteries.

"This report is the first that shows a nearly complete transformation of a synthetic plastic tube to a new host artery with excellent integration within three months," said Wang. "Most likely, the amount of time it takes to regenerate an artery can be further shortened as we refine the system."

Current approaches toward tissue-engineered arteries require a long production cycle because of the required cell culture steps. The newly developed graft is made in a few days, stores in a dry pouch at ambient temperature, and is readily available off the shelf. The ease of use and storage are similar to the conventional Dacron? grafts.

A Letter to Human Resources and Internal Recruiters ...

Why are we at war with you?

Here are some conversations that I've recently had with our dear friends in HR.

Q. How many FTEs will report to this person?

A.? What difference does it make?

Q. What happened to the last person in this position?

A. It's none of your business.

Q. What is the size of the budget?

A. This is information that I am not authorized to give you.

Q.? Do you want a J.D?

A. What's a JD?

Q. What would you like to pay?

A.? We'll pay the going rate.

then,

Q. My candidate is making 150,000.

A. Our range is 70 - tops 100.

And, some fun statements:

HR:? We do not want to see a local candidate.

Recruiter:? Ok, tell me about your relocation package.

HR:? We don't pay for relocation.

Here's a slice of life on any given day:

HR:? We are not interested in your candidate, he's a job hopper.

Recruiter. He? was working for a consulting firm, they sent him on assignments.

HR:? He still didn't stay anywhere for more than a year.

Recruiter:? The assignments were?shorter than a year. It wasn't his choice, they were assignments.

HR:? We're still not going to see him.

Recruiter:? He is excellent. His experience has given him the diverse background you require. Someone like him is very hard to find. Is there any way that we can write a letter of explanation? May I explain this to the hiring manager?

Client:? No, I handle this. BIGWIG won't see him.

(Next Day)

HR:? Don't you ever call BIGWIG again. Because you called? him, I WILL NEVER WORK WITH YOU AGAIN! This will be my last dealing with you. I will not accept new resumes.? (Just got an offer on this one)

?

Just yesterday:

?

HR:?? This candidate is already in our database, he is rejected.

Recruiter:? He told me that it was two years ago. Can you check?

(She checks)

HR:?? Doesn't matter, we know of him.

Recruiter:? But, our contract states that after a year, it's ours.

HR:? If he didn't want the job then, we don't want him now. He is rejected.

Recruiter:? He interviewed for a different job, at a different location. Have you asked anyone about him?

HR:? Click!

The snippets above might cause one to smile, but it really isn't funny. In all of these instances, we are dealing with real people, and real lives.

I'm too busy. While we are playing games, your employer is facing opportunity cost, because the position is unfilled, or unproductive. If you must pay a fee to fill a position, it means that the position is probably one that makes money, saves money, and impacts shareholder value.

I give up. I am waving the white flag. You won.

On Monday of this week, we made a decision to stop doing business with companies that will not permit us to work with the hiring authority. We have respect for your HR department. We can work with HR for the contract, and any legal or compliance issues that we may have, but in order for us to do a good job for you, we cannot work through another middleman. Our firm is the middleman. Who ever heard of getting anything accomplished with two levels of middlemen? Ask any executive.

Ask anyone who closed any deal whatsoever. We must be able to work directly with the parties involved.

Instead of the recruiter talking to HR to ask the hiring authority, who in turn responds through HR to the recruiter - we need to cut to the chase, and talk to the person who is making the decisions.

Instead of?the hiring authority?giving you an offer to give to me to give to the candidate, or WORSE? giving you an offer and you give it directly to the candidate -- we need to just get it from the top.. The horses mouth.

Anything else is just a waste of time. And, quite frankly, embarrassing.

It's embarrassing when the professionals we are trying to recruit ask a simple question, and we don't know the answer.. Our candidates are bottom line people. Their jobs are all about budgets, and performance. We need to be able to present our candidates a clear picture of your opportunity, and present your company in the most flattering light.

The next time you call your dentist to have your podiatrist pull your tooth, you'll understand.

I have?thirty years in this business. I have worked inside and third party.I have trained corporate reruiting staff, and designed recruiting systems for large companies.?Your inside recruiting staff is excellent, and probably handles 97% of?your hires. ?That small percentage of hires that involves a third party is different business, and must be handled by the third party recruiter. The big difference is that your inside people are screeners. They make sure that you only hire the best, and cast away the crazies. That works 97% of the time.

That other 3%? That's the tricky stuff. It's the 'candidate's market'. These people are the geniuses, the turnaround artists, the technical gurus, or perhaps just highly skilled in an exploding industry. They are passive candidates, they are working.? We are salesmen. We talk to people who are the best in their field, and we 'sell' them on your opportunity. It's a very tough business. We are like stockbrokers, lawyers, agents, and consultants all wrapped up in one. We are on your side. You can trust us.

in the middle of the worst recession since the Great Depression, I am saying NO to your business if I must work through your internal recruiters, or human resources. Even if you have been an absolute joy to work with, I simply must be able to work with the person who has the need, and makes the decision.

If I can't work in a respectful way with the person who is the hiring authority, I can not work with your company at all. This isn't child's play. This is honest to goodness real business dealing with shrewd negotiators. You are paying large fees for a very difficult service. Your HR department has already tried to fill the position. Now you are using a recruiter. It's our turn.

If you are ever in a bind, and would like to try our services, all we need from you is this:

1.? I must be able to discuss my candidate's resume and qualifications directly with the hiring authority.

2.? I must be able to have feedback after an interview, real feedback from the hiring authority.

3.? I must be able to prepare my candidate to accept your offers.

4. I must be able to talk to the hiring authority about the job, the expectations, the projects, everything that isn't on the job description. (Which is most of it)

I believe that we are one of the best recruiting firms?in our space, and I'd love to have the opportunity to work with you,

?

All the best,

(AP) ? A Maryland college student accused of killing a housemate and eating his heart and part of his brain was kicked out of an ROTC program after he punched holes in the walls of the cadet computer lab and a military instructor referred to him as a "Virginia Tech waiting to happen," according to a campus police report months before the attack.

Alex Kinyua, 21, a native of Kenya and a student at Morgan State University, admitted using a knife to kill and carve up 37-year-old Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie before eating his organs, the Harford County Sheriff's Office said last week. The older man, a native of Ghana, had been staying with the Kinyua family for about six weeks at their townhouse in the Baltimore suburb of Joppatowne. Investigators haven't given a possible motive.

Two weeks before he was killed, he said he was ready to come home and get a job and dreamed of someday becoming president of his native land of Ghana, his relatives from that country told The Associated Press.

"Daddy is in a state of shock, does not want to believe his son is dead," Gloria Boahema Asante, the youngest of four siblings, said in an interview with the AP in Accra. "We look at the picture that went with the story and see the smiles on his face and do not want to believe that he is dead."

A Morgan State campus police report obtained by The Baltimore Sun said that after Kinyua's outburst in the classroom in December, Staff Sgt. Robert Edwards, a senior military instructor at the school, made the Virginia Tech comment.

The report to which the Sun referred to on Monday does not provide any rationale for the mention of the 2007 massacre in which 32 students were killed by a student who then committed suicide. The Virginia Tech gunman had been ruled a danger to himself during a court hearing in 2005 and was ordered to undergo outpatient mental health treatment.

Morgan State officials referred questions about the report to campus police, who did not provide it immediately to the AP.

The report does say Kinyua was barred from campus until a meeting with school officials and that two officers didn't think a psychological evaluation was needed, though one did call a counseling center emergency number. When they got no response, they released him to his father, physics professor Antony Kinyua. His father is who asked Agyei-Kodie to move in when he hadn't worked for three years and was trying to re-establish his life, said James Holt, a friend of the victim for about 10 years.

The report notes that Kinyua was kicked out of the school's ROTC program because of the outburst. ROTC officials have declined to discuss the reason why Kinyua was "disenrolled" in January in the college-based U.S. military program that allows students to be commissioned as officers when they graduate. Officials said Monday that Edwards was now deployed to Afghanistan.

In a January forum, Kinyua mentions Virginia Tech while advocating for a greater focus on protecting young men and women from university violence, according to a video released by the university. He then suggests the hazing policy include "blood sacrifice." It's not clear what he means and his short comment is met with applause from the crowd.

Virginia Tech was a subject again in his Facebook page posting in February. He referred to it and "other past university killings around the country" and warned "ethnic cleansing is the policy, strategy and tactics that will affect you, directly or indirectly in the coming months."

And, in a separate case on May 19, police said Kinyua beat a man with a baseball bat on Morgan State's campus, fracturing his skull and making him lose sight in one eye. Kinyua was freed on $220,000 bail just days before Agyei-Kodie was killed. He is now being held without bond on a murder charge.

Grieving relatives last spoke to Agyei-Kodie when he called for Mother's Day, said his younger sister, Irene Konadu Asante, who was dressed in mourning clothes of red and black.

"We took turns to talk to him and he expressed his desire to return home within months. He even asked my husband to start looking for jobs for him," she said through tears. "My brother's dream is to become the president of Ghana and that is why he had spent so much time educating himself in the U.S."

Agyei-Kodie, the son of a retired banker, attended the prestigious St. Augustine's College at Cape Coast and went on to Presbyterian Boys Secondary School in Accra before graduating from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology with a degree in chemical engineering.

He had his problems in the U.S., though. He had studied at Morgan State, but not since 2008. He was sentenced to at least a year and a half in jail after a 2008 conviction in Baltimore County for sex offense, assault, harassment, stalking and telephone misuse for making repeated calls to a woman, according to court records. An immigration judge ordered him removed from the country in 2010, but U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement was waiting for documents from Ghana before returning him to his country.

Agyei-Kodie maintained his innocence to the end and hoped to clear his name, Holt, his friend, told AP.

Gloria Konadu Asante recalled that her brother always "hammered" on the importance of education.

"Brother Kujoe is every little sister's dream of a big brother. He was always encouraging me to go to school and did all he could to help me in my education," she said. "Education would take you anywhere and (he) did everything to see me through university."

First video taken with Google Glasses shared

22 hrs.

Google has publicly unveiled new photos and the first video from the real view of their augmented reality glasses prototype. The images show what the wearer sees while reading a newspaper, catching a football in the backyard and helping a smiling child play on the jungle gym.

Such views don't necessarily represent anything people haven't seen before with head-mounted portable cameras. But they do hint at how Google Glasses could enable many people beyond geeky life-casters to capture a diverse array of moments in their lives ? the video shows the bouncy viewpoint of the Google Glasses wearer doing flips on a trampoline.

Google tech lead Max Braun showed off the photos and video at the Google + Photographer's Conference on May 23.

The Internet search giant has yet to show off real images or photos of how the glasses could seamlessly integrate virtual information with what a person sees in the real world. Its earlier unveiling of "Project Glass" included a concept video that imagined a wearer getting social calendar reminders and map directions in his field of view.

Still, many members of the public still seem enthusiastic about just having a pair of glasses with a small camera attached. One of the top comments on the YouTube video of the trampoline jumping simply stated "Shut up and take my money!"

The most popular comment of all had a perhaps tongue-in-cheek suggestion for using the Google Glasses ? "Good for POV [point-of-view] porn."
