(AP) ? A North Dakota man killed his three young daughters after they rushed to greet him during a surprise visit and left their bodies tucked in their beds, Wisconsin authorities said in court documents released Thursday.

St. Croix County prosecutors filed a criminal complaint charging Aaron Schaffhausen, 34, with three counts of first-degree intentional homicide. Each count carries a mandatory life sentence.

Circuit Judge Howard W. Cameron set Schaffhausen's bail at $2 million Thursday and ordered him to have no contact with the girls' mother or her immediate family. Schaffhausen's attorney, listed in online court records as public defender John Kucinski, didn't immediately respond to a telephone message left at his office.

Autopsy results showed 11-year-old Amara Schaffhausen, 8-year-old Sophie Schaffhausen and 5-year-old Cecilia Schaffhausen died from "sharp force injury" to the neck. Cecilia also had been strangled, according to the complaint.

The girl's mother, Jessica Schaffhausen, and Aaron Schaffhausen divorced this past January. He lived in Minot while the girls lived with their mother in River Falls, a city of 15,000 about 30 miles east of the Twin Cities, in a house she rented from her ex-husband, according to the complaint.

Investigators wrote in the complaint that Aaron Schaffhausen texted his ex-wife around noon Tuesday and asked for an unplanned visit with the girls. The mother thought he was supposed to be working a construction job in Minot but agreed, telling him to be gone by mid-afternoon because she didn't want to see him.

A Minneapolis Star Tribune report said Aaron Schaffhausen was fired from his job at a St. Paul construction firm on July 5 after he failed to show up for work. The firm had hired him to work on projects in western North Dakota, the newspaper reported. The firm's sales manager did not respond to an Associated Press email inquiry seeking details.

The girls' baby sitter told detectives the girls were so excited to see him when he arrived they rushed to him and took him upstairs to show him their things. The baby sitter followed them upstairs, hugged the girls goodbye and left, the complaint said.

About two hours later, Aaron Schaffhausen called his ex-wife.

"You can come home now because I killed the kids," Jessica Schaffhausen said he told her.

She immediately called police, who found no one home when they reached the house. They discovered the girls tucked into their beds, blankets up their necks. All three had what appeared to be dried blood on their faces and a large amount of blood covered the carpet in a bedroom.

Officers detected an odor they thought at first was natural gas. They later discovered a gasoline container had been tipped over in the basement, spilling its contents.

About an hour after he contacted his ex-wife, Aaron Schaffhausen drove into the River Falls Police Station parking lot and surrendered. Officers noted his shorts were stained with what appeared to be blood. Detectives tried to interview him, according to the complaint, but he said nothing.

The complaint did not say where Jessica Schaffhausen was on Tuesday.

Dawn Simonson, executive director of Metropolitan Area Agency on Aging, a nonprofit organization in St. Paul that helps the elderly live independently, said during a brief telephone interview Thursday morning that Jessica Schaffhausen has worked there since 2009. Schaffhausen, she said, helps people return to their own homes after stints in nursing homes.

Simonson declined to comment further, saying she wanted to respect Schaffhausen's privacy. She didn't immediately return a telephone message later Thursday asking if Schaffhausen had been at work Tuesday.

"We're just so sad and so devastated by this loss," Simonson said Thursday morning.

Obama seeks to keep once-red Virginia on his side

WASHINGTON (AP) ? Against an increasingly bitter campaign backdrop, President Barack Obama is seeking to shore up support for his re-election in Virginia, a state he won four years ago ending decades of domination by Republican presidential candidates.

For challenger Mitt Romney, the state now looms as a battleground crucial to his presidential hopes.

Obama will travel to the southeast and southwest corners of the state Friday, courting young and African-American voters in the Virginia Beach-Hampton area before turning to more conservative Roanoke, unwilling to cede votes to Romney. On Saturday, he will campaign in Richmond, a once-staunchly Republican region that he won in 2008.

Both campaigns acknowledge Virginia's new role as a fiercely contested state after years of being virtually overlooked in presidential politics. Obama won the state by a 53-46 margin over his 2008 rival, Sen. John McCain.

Obama's visit comes after a day of hostile exchanges between the campaigns over Romney's tenure at the private equity firm he founded in 1984. Documents filed by the company, Bain Capital, conflict with Romney's statements about when he gave up control of the firm. Both sides accused the other of being dishonest.

The documents, filed with the Securities and Exchange Commission, place Romney in charge of Bain from 1999 to 2001, a period in which it outsourced jobs and ran companies that fell into bankruptcy. Romney and his aides say he left Bain in 1999 to run the Salt Lake City Olympics, and a Bain statement said Romney "remained the sole stockholder for a time while formal ownership was being documented and transferred to the group of partners who took over management of the firm in 1999."

Meanwhile, both Obama and former President Bill Clinton say Romney has invited close scrutiny of his business acumen because he's been selling himself as heavily qualified to improve the economy.

"I think it is entirely appropriate to look at that record and see whether, in fact ... his focus was creating jobs and he successfully did that," Obama said in an interview with CBS's Charlie Rose, portions of which were broadcast Friday on "CBS This Morning."

Obama said Romney's business past doesn't disqualify him in any way for office, but said, "I also think it's important if that's his main calling card, if his basic premise is that 'I'm Mr. Fix-it' on the economy.' "

Clinton, appearing Friday on NBC's "Today" show, said Romney's record in private business is fair game because the former Massachusetts governor has put such heavy emphasis on it. And he also said that Romney's refusal to release any full tax returns except for 2010 "struck me as a little odd."

Clinton said voters "ought to make up their own mind" whether they support someone who apparently sought to minimize his federal tax liability by parking large sums of money overseas.

Romney's tenure at Bain has been a major target for Obama, who has accused Romney of being an "outsourcing pioneer" who invested in companies that shipped jobs to China, India and elsewhere overseas. Romney claims he had no role in outsourcing U.S. jobs because much of that activity didn't happen until after 1999, when he says he had given up operational control at Bain.

The Romney campaign on Friday released a new television ad that depicts Obama as employing tactics he once decried. It features footage of Obama's 2008 convention speech declaring, "If you don't have a record to run on, then you paint your opponent as someone people should run from."

A poll released Thursday by the Pew Research Center suggests Obama's attacks on Romney's background may be working. The poll, conducted June 28 through July 9, shows the president leading his Republican opponent 50 percent to 43 percent among registered voters. And Romney now lags behind Obama as the candidate better able to improve economic conditions. In the Pew Center's June poll, Romney held an eight-point edge on that question.

Obama's two-day visit to Virginia underscores his stepped-up attention to the shortlist of key states that will determine the outcome of the presidential contest.

Virginia, with 13 electoral votes, figures prominently in both the Obama and Romney strategies. But Obama has more options for an Election Day victory without Virginia than does Romney. Illustrating its importance, the state has seen the third heaviest television ad spending by the candidates and their allied groups, behind only Ohio and Florida.

The state is represented by two moderate Democratic senators. But since Obama won four years ago, Republicans have done well in state offices and a majority of the state's congressional seats are held by Republicans.

Stephen Farnsworth, a political scientist at the University of Mary Washington in Fredericksburg, Va., said the state could well decide not only the presidential election but control of the Senate: Democrat Tim Kaine and Republican George Allen, both former governors, are in a tight race to succeed Sen. Jim Webb, a Democrat.

Despite its relatively low unemployment rate of 5.6 percent, the state relies heavily on military contracts that could suffer significantly under automatic spending cuts authorized by Congress and signed by the president last year. The Hampton Roads area that Obama is visiting Friday is home to a large military presence ? the world's largest naval base is there ? and its economy is heavily dependent on defense spending.

Garmin GLO Portable GPS and GLONASS receiver: location refresh rate 10 times faster than typical GPS

Garmin GLO Portable GPS and GLONASS receiver location refresh rate 10 times faster than typical GPSMaps. Everyone loves 'em. But while plenty of companies are showing off some very fancy map updates, we're still being left somewhere, staring at tall buildings, waiting for our location to update and lead the way. Garmin reckons it's solved the problem with its first GPS and GLONASS-compatible receiver, which can connect to both iOS and Android devices. Initial lock-on times are apparently 20 percent faster than typical GPS, while GLONASS' additional 24 satellites will make faring through canyons and urban sprawls less of a struggle for signal pick-up. Garmin has also upped its position refresh rate to 10 times per second: typical GPS receivers will update just once every second. It connects to devices through Bluetooth and will offer a 12-hour navigation boost on a single charge.

If you're a pilot, there's even a GLO for Aviation package, which throws in a mount, power cable and six-month trial for its Pilot navi app. The standard receiver will launch in August, priced at $99, while those with wings can skip the queue and nab their version now for $139.

?Ready to move on,? Katie Holmes meets to discuss divorce, film jobs

While Katie Holmes and Tom Cruise are keeping mum on their pending divorce, some of their associates are talking, and here?s what I?ve learned:

? Holmes is said to be very much at peace with her decision and already has held several meetings with attorneys (to discuss divorce strategy) and agents (to already talk about potential future film and TV projects). ?Katie has been particularly busy reading a bunch of scripts lately,? said a source close to the actress. ?She?s hoping to find a big comedy to do. She is so totally ready to move on. She has been for a long time.?

? Holmes also has received a shout-out from ex-Scientologist Jenna Miscavige Hill, the niece of David Miscavige, the head of the Church of Scientology and one of Cruise?s closest associates. In an online posting, Hill wrote Scientology ?is both mentally and at times physically abusive,? offering support for Holmes and her alleged reluctance to expose daughter Suri to schooling by church members. ?We got a lousy education from unqualified teachers,? Hill writes, adding that ?any organization that is capable of mistreating and neglecting the needs of children ? is no place for an innocent child.? ? Cruise, who returned to Los Angeles from filming ?Oblivion? in Iceland on Tuesday to spend his 50th birthday without his estranged wife and their daughter Suri, is hunkered down with his legal team and Scientology advisors. ?The last thing Tom wants is more bad press for himself or the church,? said a longtime Cruise insider. No matter the specifics of the couple?s pre-nuptial agreement, Cruise ? just named by Forbes as Hollywood?s highest-paid actor ? is expected to be very generous to Holmes. ?It gains him nothing for this to drag on and keep creating negative headlines,? added the source. ?However, I do think he will push hard for either joint custody or extremely generous visitation rights.? MAKIN? MUSIC: ?Boss? star Troy Garity will showcase his spinning talent and kick off the Public?s guest DJ series from 10 p.m. Friday to 1 a.m. in the hotel?s library bar ? across the lobby from the Pump Room. ? ? American Idol? season 10 finalist and ex-Wilmette resident Casey Abrams not only has just released his self-titled debut album, but he?s also working on an exclusive song and music video aimed at raising awareness of inflammatory bowel disease ? the illness which almost knocked him out of ?Idol? competition. As for the new album, it features a cover of the Ray Charles classic ?Hit the Road Jack? ? a duet with his ?Idol? competitor and Wheeling native Haley Reinhart.

? Cabaret lovers will want to know Lee Lessack (just out with his ?Chanteur? CD) will be at Davenport?s July 12, and Andrea Marcovicci will be at the Wicker Park club July 18-22. SEEN ON THE SCENE: Among those spied supporting ex-Bear Greg Olsen?s charity foundation at the ?Kicks for a Cure? kickball tournament were his ex-teammates Matt Forte and Caleb Hanie and the Colts? Drew Stanton, plus Vince Vaughn, his wife Kyla and daughter Lochlyn ? who also were spied Sunday at the Original Pancake House on Bellevue, off Rush. ? Recent sightings at Harry Caray?s on Kinzie have included actor Tom Irwin, Bill Kurtis, retired Major League great and Cy Young winner Pedro Martinez, Patrick Sharp and ex-Bears punter Brad Maynard. ? Donovan McNabb was spied hanging at the bar at Board Room.
