UCLA creates transparent solar cell, dreams of current generating windows

Transparent photovoltaics have yet to grace the face of your smartphone, but don't give up hope -- UCLA researchers are working on a new see-through solar cell that's showing potential. Using a new type of polymer solar cell, the team has been able to build a device that converts infrared light into electrical current. Current prototypes boast 4 percent energy conversion efficiency at 66 percent transparency -- not crystal clear, but certainly clean enough to peer through. According to a study in ACS Nano, the technology could be used in "building-integrated photovoltaics or integrated photovoltaic chargers for portable electronics." Translation? It could one day be used to build solar windows or better sun collecting smartphones. Don't get too excited though, the technology still has a ways to go before any of these dreams come to fruition. Still, feel free to head past the break for the team's official press release, or skip to the source to take in the full academic study.

Interviews Are Stupid | David T Rosen

Interviews Are Terrible

For a business blog, that title sounds somewhat immature. Not exactly the kind of thing you?d expect to read around here, is it? But there?s really no better way to say it, and it is 100% fact. Interviews, specifically job interviews, are simply terrible. The whole process is hugely flawed.

Answer me this. As an interviewer, it?s your job to get a feel for a person?s personality, behavior, work ethic, and experience. How are you supposed to really get a feel for how a potential new co-worker or business partner is going to act once you actually get to work in the span of say?.half an hour? Or an hour? You wouldn?t commit to a romantic relationship after knowing someone for that long. It would be silly. So why would you commit to a business relationship after the same amount of time? What?s worse is from the standpoint of the interviewer, you may potentially have to go through this process dozens of times over the span of days (or if you?re really unlucky, a single day), trying to get a read on every single one. How do you keep them straight? How do you, with this fleeting glimpse of a person and their history, make the best decision for you and your company?

On the other side of that coin, as the interviewee you?re essentially being subjected to an interrogation. You?re forced to sit in a most likely uncomfortable chair while someone you?ve just met picks apart your work history, your personality, anything they can, to try and get a bead on what kind of addition you?ll be to their business. It?s a very uncomfortable situation to be in. It?s no small wonder so many people come out of job interviews saying, ?well, I bombed that.? Can you blame them? This is not an ideal way to try and communicate to someone you?re trying to do business with what you?re all about.

Like I said right up there in the title, interviews are stupid.

Now one would think that, now that you?ve cast of the shackles of the 9-5 world and gone into business for yourself, searching for the biggest piece of PIE you can get your hands on, that interviews would be a thing of the past.

I wish I could say that was true, but unfortunately, that would make me a liar. You may have to interview a prospective new co-worker, a sub-contractor you need to do some work for you, a potential investor, someone who wants to come on-board as an investor, the list goes on and on and on. When it comes to operating a business, you are going to have to interview people.

But do you have to do it the same old flawed way that the 9-5 world does it? If you will pardon my French just this one time, hell no you don?t. Just because you may have to sit down and interview someone, doesn?t mean you have to do it in the traditional way. In fact, that?s a very bad idea. You work for yourself now, it?s time to make up your own rules.

We?ve talked before about making a good first impression and?communicating effectively, and those skills will definitely come into play here. Pulling someone into a room, putting them in a chair, and then picking apart their life? Not a good first impression. Asking a bunch of vague questions that tell you nothing about what a person is really like? Not effective communication.

This is your business, and your money on the line. The old ways of interviewing someone just aren?t going to cut it. Take your time with each interviewee, regardless of the purpose of the interview. Get to know them. Really get a feel for them. Get creative. You?re not bound by thirty minutes and a crib sheet of questions. Do what feels right. Ask what comes to mind organically. While you?re at it, toss the whole ?sitting in a room across a table? format out the window. Meet your interviewee somewhere you can get them to relax and open up a little. A coffee shop is good. A bar, well, you don?t want them to get too comfortable, if you know what I mean. And as your ?interview? (at this point by 9-5 standards it barely qualifies as one) progresses, don?t just listen to what the conversation sparks in your mind. Listen to your instincts. Your intellectual response may be ?yes, this person is perfect?, but your gut might be saying ?no, this person is not the right fit.? If your instinct is leaning in that direction, it just might be right. The reverse is true as well.

The conventional interview is simply not a good way to choose people to join your business, in any capacity. This is your business, your future, and your PIE. Find a better way to find people to help you bake that PIE. A way that works for you, your personality, and your business. Not the old way that we all know is completely and utterly broken.

Match the Pictures: Scavenger Hunt Sunday- Baby Shower Style

Today we gave my sister a surprise baby shower.? I have no idea how my mother and sister Leanne pulled it off. Liz lives down the street from my parents house and my sister Leanne, so to put together a surprised baby shower and not have her find out was just crazy.? But it worked. She was totally surprised.?

It has been a crazy month at the farm.? One of the alpacas has been over-due and my mother had to stick close to the farm and keep watch on the expectant mother just in case she needed help (not my sister, the alpaca).? So hooray last weekend Geneva had her cria Jatoba. A beautiful little girl.

So after the healthy little alpaca girl was born it turned into full steam baby shower set?up?mode.? Which was really hard because my sister Liz is always at the farm.

So a little bit here and a little bit there. It all got pulled together.? To add to the excitement of the day the three crias (baby alpacas) got sheared only a few hours before the shower.? So Liz was sitting home waiting for us to call to let her know when the shearer was coming. Ha to her shearing was done and she showed up thirty minutes before the shower and we (small amount of family) yelled surprise! She was dressed in her farm clothes ready to get down and dirty shearing alpacas.? So we all laughed and told her to go home, get changed it was a pool party baby shower and come back as soon as possible.

It was a great time at the shower. Now on to SHS baby shower style...

Wrapped

Liz's dog Finn was wrapped in a lei. Hee hee

Time Together

My sisters, brother-in-law, and nephews playing together.

Yeah spending time with our family! They are so much fun.?

Tell Me a Story

My cousin's son read himself a story and read some out loud to us too, but there were some difficult words he didn't know. He is so cute.

Love or Couple

My sister, brother-in-law and their dog Finn.? Clearly in Love.

A fun family shot of my sister, brother-in-law, his parents and of course Finn.

Duplicated

Oh dear... I had nothing for "Duplicated" so instead I'll share pictures of little Jatoba the little alpaca that was sooooooo overdue and drove us all (especially my mother) crazy waiting.? Does duplicated count as shower and shearing....? okay a huge stretch, but at least she is sooooooooo cute and so sweet.

Look at those legs!!!

I hope you aren't sick of seeing alpaca pictures.?

Have? great Sunday.

Doctors use eggs to reverse egg allergies in kids

First peanuts, now eggs. Doctors have reversed allergies in some children and teens by giving them tiny daily doses of problem foods, gradually training their immune systems to accept them.

In the best test of this yet, about a dozen kids were able to overcome allergies to eggs, one of the most ubiquitous foods, lurking in everything from pasta and veggie burgers to mayonnaise and even marshmallows. Some of the same doctors used a similar approach on several kids with peanut allergies a few years ago.

Don't try this yourself, though. It takes special products, a year or more and close supervision because severe reactions remain a risk, say doctors involved in the study, published in Thursday's New England Journal of Medicine.

"This experimental therapy can safely be done only by properly trained physicians," says a statement from Dr. Anthony Fauci, director of the National Institute of Allergy and Infectious Diseases, the federal agency that sponsored the study.

It didn't work for everyone, and some dropped out of the study because of allergic reactions. But the results "really do show there is promise for future treatment" and should be tested now in a wider group of kids, said the study's leader, Dr. A. Wesley Burks, pediatrics chief at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill.

More than 2 percent of young children have egg allergies, suffering wheezing and tight throats or even life-threatening reactions if they eat any egg, Burks said. Many will outgrow this by age 4 or 5, and more will by the time they are teens, but 10 to 20 percent never do. The big worry is that these kids will eat eggs as an ingredient in a food they don't realize contains them, and have a severe reaction. Training a child's immune system to tolerate even small amounts of egg to prevent this was the goal of the study.

It enrolled 55 children ages 5 to 18. Forty were given tiny daily amounts of powdered egg white, the part that usually causes the allergy. The other 15 were given cornstarch ? a dummy treatment ? for comparison. The amounts were increased every two weeks until kids in the treatment group were eating about one third of an egg each day.

They periodically went to their doctors to try eating eggs. They failed the test if a doctor could see any symptoms such as wheezing.

At about a year, none receiving the dummy treatment passed the egg challenge. Those on the egg white powder fared better.

"At the end of the year, half of them passed. At the end of two years, 75 percent of them passed," Burks said.

Next, he went a step further, to see if participants could maintain tolerance without the daily powder. Those who passed the second test stopped using the powder, avoided eggs entirely for four to six weeks, then tried eating eggs again as they wished. Eleven of the 30 kids were able to do this with no problem.

The treatment worked for 10-year-old Nicholas Redmond of Huntersville, N.C., near Charlotte. Avoiding eggs has been "a huge problem," said his father, Chris Redmond. Now Nicholas has some egg nearly every day to maintain his tolerance, which his father finds terribly ironic.

"You spend 2 1/2 years avoiding eggs" and now have to make sure he gets some, Chris Redmond said.

Nicholas said the hardest part of his allergy was turning down birthday treats at school.

"I would say 'no thank you' and I had this little treat box with stuff filled for class parties," he said.

Now, "I can have eggs in cake and cookies" ? if they don't contain peanuts, he said. He's also allergic to those, and will start sensitization therapy for peanuts next month.
