In this handout image provided by Jackson Memorial Hospital, cannibal attack victim Ronald Poppo, 65, shows the extent of his injuries while still in the hospital on June 12, 2012, in Miami, Florida.

By NBC News staff

The 65-year-old homeless man whose face was viciously chewed off by a naked man in Florida can be heard speaking for the first time since he was assaulted by the so-called ?Miami Zombie? in May. ?

?He attacked me,? Ronald Poppo told police of Rudy Eugene, in a recording obtained by CBS Miami. ?He just ripped me to ribbons. He chewed up my face. He plucked out my eyes. Basically, that?s all there is to say about it.?

Doctors say Poppo lost nearly 80 percent of his face, including his nose, was blinded in the attack and also was inadvertently shot by police in the chest.

See the original report

?He mashed my face into the sidewalk,? Poppo said. ?My face is all bent and mashed up. My eyes, my eyes got plucked out. He was strangling me in wrestling holds at the same time he was plucking my eyes out.?

After several surgeries at Jackson Memorial Hospital in Miami, Poppo was transferred to Purdue Medical Center, a long-term care facility also in Miami. A fund set up to help cover Poppo?s health care costs raised more than $100,000. He is now awake and alert.

The attack happened the afternoon of May 26 when Eugene, not wearing any clothes,?approached?Poppo near the highway. That?s when police say Eugene started chewing off Poppo?s face and only stopped when officers shot and killed him.

The 18-minute attack was captured by a security camera on the building that houses the Miami Herald.

This undated booking file photo made available by the Miami-Dade Police Dept. shows Ronald Poppo before he was attacked.

?For a very short amount of time, I thought he was a good guy,? Poppo said. ?But he just went and turned berserk. He apparently didn?t? have a good day at the beach, and he, he was coming back. And I guess he took it out, took it out on me or something. I don?t know.?

Poppo?s statements were recorded during a July 19 interview with Miami homicide Det. Sgt. Altarr Williams and Det. Frankie Sanchez.

Sgt. Williams asked Poppo what Eugene was saying when he attacked him.

??You, me, buddy, and nobody else here,?? Poppo recalled. ??I?m gonna ? gonna kill you,? Or something like that.?

?He just started to scream and was talking kind of funny talk for a while too,? Poppo said. ?He must have been souped up on something.?

A man was shot to death in Miami after eating the face of his still-living victim. WTVJ-TV's Diana Gonzalez reports.

An autopsy of Eugene revealed no human flesh in his stomach but a number of unidentified undigested pills were present. Although police had initially speculated that the street drug ?bath salts? may have been involved, preliminary toxicology reports were positive only for marijuana.

Both the cause and motive for Eugene?s bizarre behavior remain unknown.

Poppo said Eugene did not have any type of weapon. He also said he did not recall ever meeting or seeing Eugene before the day of the attack.

The police investigation revealed that Eugene had an extensive criminal history, having been arrested eight times since the age of 16.

How Much Longer Will We Talk to the Voyagers?

Since its 1977 launch, the Voyager 1 probe has passed gas-giant planets, beamed back the famous Pale Blue Dot picture of Earth from afar, and is now passing through the limits of the solar wind?s reach. Its sister craft, Voyager 2, took the first pictures of the outer gas giants, Uranus and Neptune. Likewise, it?s leaving the solar system.

Despite the Voyagers' incredible distance and its 1970s hardware, scientists can still communicate with them. But how much longer will they be able to talk to the first man-made crafts to venture so far? Turns out, nobody is totally sure.

"We thought we might not be able to go beyond where we are right now," says Jim Hodder, the operations manager in charge of the arrays of antennae responsible for Voyager communications. "But because we advanced our ground systems over the past few decades, I think right now it?s about another 10 years."

Distance isn?t such a big problem. Technological advances since the 1977 launch have made our antenna arrays incredibly powerful, Hodder says. For example, the Deep Space Network?a series of three antenna arrays strategically placed in rural locations around the world?can send and receive messages to and from the areas well outside our solar system. Cooling the 70-meter antennas to 18 degrees Kelvin ( minus 427 F) reduces noise, and the radio waves transmit data from probes and satellites loud and clear.

The real reason scientists can?t communicate with Voyager indefinitely is that the pioneering probes' fuel supply is not infinite. Eventually they will run out of juice and be left to wander the galaxy alone.

Suzanne Dodd, the Voyager project manager at NASA?s Jet Propulsion Laboratory, says the Voyager spacecraft are powered by a couple of nuclear reactors sitting on the back of the probe, but they will soon run out of steam. "The nuclear power sources lose about 4 watts of power a year," she says. At this rate, Dodd says, Voyager should have enough power to communicate with Earth until 2022 or maybe 2025.

The fact that Voyager is still sending back data today is a feat in itself. When the Voyager probes were launched in 1977, no one thought they would still be in operation today. The missions were initially set up to get a better idea of the geography of Jupiter and Saturn, but the researchers in control of the mission didn?t want to stop there. Dodd and the rest of the team have extended Voyager?s life using the few improvised tactics they have available to them.

The scientists turned off Voyager 1's cameras in 1990 to conserve energy (but not before they turned Voyager back toward home to take the Pale Blue Dot photo). Last fall, they turned off the heaters on the backup thrusters. This means that the backup fuel lines will eventually freeze. It?s a risk the team was willing to take to extend the viability of the primary thrusters. Dodd thinks that in 2016, the team will probably have to turn off the gyros responsible for maneuvering the probe, and its movements will be left to the whims of deep space.

Voyager 1 also has a few built-in fail-safe devices to keep it talking to Earth. "If it doesn?t hear from us, it will go into a set pattern of activities," Dodd says. "It will still send things to us even if it doesn?t get information from home. It assumes its receiver failed."

Still, hearing from the explorers will grow more difficult. Voyager 1 is now 11 billion miles from the sun and getting 330 million miles farther away each year. At it current distance, a round-trip message from Voyager I to Earth and back again takes a little more than 33 hours. And Voyager scientists are allotted only 6 to 8 hours per day on the Deep Space Network, meaning there may not be somebody listening when Voyager is talking. (In fact, when Voyager first ventured into the heliosheath?the last layer between deep space and the sun?s wind?another group of researchers was using the array to monitor another mission. The data was saved, and the Voyager team got the exciting news a few hours later.)

That doesn?t dampen Dodd?s enthusiasm. "We want to see it get into interstellar space. We want to see it continue sending data back even if we can?t send it to them."

Samsung vies for spotlight ahead of iPhone launch

(AP) ? Samsung Electronics Co., the world's largest mobile-phone maker, said Friday it plans to show a new mobile device in late August, trying to stay in the consumer spotlight ahead of Apple's expected release of the latest iPhone in September.

The move comes as Samsung is ensnarled in a closely-watched courtroom fight with Apple Inc. over smartphone and tablet patents. Each side is seeking billions of dollars in compensation or royalty payments.

The South Korean company said the new device will be unveiled Aug. 29 in Berlin, two days before Europe's biggest consumer electronics show, IFA. The company declined to give more details.

But analysts said it is likely an update of the Galaxy Note, which has a screen bigger than smartphones but smaller than tablet computers and can be used with a stylus pen.

"It is time for the new Galaxy Note," said Kim Young-chan, an analyst at Shinhan Investment. "Samsung's strategy is to roll out a new product before Apple does, so there will be a new smartphone before the new iPhone."

Analysts expect the new iPhone to arrive in September or October and go on worldwide sale during the fourth quarter.

Releasing another mobile product will help Samsung fend off competition from Apple during the fourth quarter. Analysts believe sales of Galaxy S3 smartphones, released in Europe in May and in the U.S. in June, will hit a peak before Apple introduces a new iPhone.

The Galaxy Note has a 5.3-inch display that is about twice as large as the iPhone's 3.5-inch screen diagonally. The Note received mixed reviews when it made a debut last year but it took off, becoming one of Samsung's top-selling high-end smartphones along with the Galaxy S.

Samsung sold 7 million of the first generation of Galaxy Note between October and May.

The product launches in the fall will be Samsung and Apple's first following the trial. The U.S. district court in San Jose said the patent trial between Samsung and Apple will last about four weeks from July 30.

Sudan and South Sudan strike oil exportation deal

ADDIS ABABA, Ethiopia (AP) ? South Sudan and Sudan said Saturday they struck a deal over the south's exportation of oil through Sudan's pipelines and the distribution of oil revenues, two major stumbling blocks for long-term peace between the countries that emerged from decades of war.

A disagreement over oil sharing prompted South Sudan to shut down its oil production in January. Oil also sparked a dangerous military confrontation between the two countries in April when South Sudan captured the disputed town of Heglig, which is responsible for more than half of Sudan's oil production.

South Sudan said in a statement Saturday they will pay $9.48 per barrel to use one of Sudan's pipelines. Sudan had demanded that the south should pay $36 per barrel, the statement said.

Mutrif Sidiq, the official spokesman for Sudan's delegation in the talks in Addis Ababa told The Associated Press from Khartoum, that there was an agreement on the transit fees for two different pipelines, one transporting crude for export and another that is light crude oil that goes through a refinery before going to the port. One fee agreed to was $9.48, and another was for about $11.

"The deal is accepted by both sides. Even though it falls below the expectations of both sides, it constitutes a middle ground," he said by telephone.

South Sudan said the agreement on the pipeline transportation fees will last for three and half years after which the countries may negotiate lower rates or South Sudan, which expects to have constructed a pipeline through Kenya, will stop using Sudan's pipeline.

A $3.028 billion payment will be made to Sudan by the south to compensate their neighbor for the loss of oil revenue following South Sudan's independence last year, according to South Sudan's statement. That amount is a one-off payment and compromises of a third of Sudan's financial gap resulting from the loss of South Sudan's oil revenue, it said.

Sidiq said Sudan's budget deficit reached $10.4 billion. He said it is now the turn of the international community to provide assistance, expected to be around $3.5 billion to Khartoum.

"The negotiations were very tough this round," said South Sudan's chief negotiator Pagan Amum at a press conference Saturday following his return to Juba, the capital.

Amum hailed the agreement as a victory for South Sudan and his negotiation team. "The government of South Sudan has succeeded to protect the resources of the people of South Sudan," he said.

Sudan and South Sudan are engaged in negotiations in Ethiopia hosted by the African Union over a host of issues, including the separation of their once-unified oil industry and the demarcation of the long, joint border. The negotiations have been led by former South African President Thabo Mbeki who said Saturday that the African Union has set the deadline for the end of all talks as Sept. 22. Mbeki said an African Union heads of state summit will deal with issue of the disputed oil-rich Abyei region.

Amum accused the international community of favoring Sudan at the negotiation table and during disputes between the two countries. He said the bias was most evident when Sudan began taking South Sudan's oil in lieu of unpaid transit fees from their pipelines.

"America, the U.K., all were silent. They were abetting the theft of Sudan," he said. "They (international community) were all telling us 'let it flow, let Sudan take it.' Because they don't want it to affect prices."

He also said that international pressure on the negotiations was based on desperation and the search for a "quick fix."

U.S. Secretary of State Hillary Clinton was in Juba Friday to discuss the progress of negotiations with President Salva Kiir. Clinton urged South Sudan and Sudan to reach a deal on oil as quickly as possible to resuscitate their flagging economies. She also called on South Sudan to soften its stance, urging an interim agreement on oil if a comprehensive deal could not be reached.

"A percentage of something is better than a percentage of nothing," said Clinton.

South Sudan peacefully broke away from Sudan last year after an independence vote as stipulated in a peace agreement that ended a more than two decades-long civil war in 2005, but the two sides never resolved the most contentious issues between them.

In January, South Sudan shut down its oil production after accusing Khartoum of stealing oil shipped through Sudanese pipelines for export. Sudan said it had taken the oil in lieu of transit payments for the use of its pipelines. The decision has cost both governments millions of dollars in revenue, further burdening their weak economies.

Because the south's oil travels through pipelines that run through Sudan, the decision cut off a major source of Khartoum's revenue has led to instability in that capital. But the move cost South Sudan as well. The landlocked nation derives 98 percent of its normal government budget from oil.

Sudan's Sidiq said more talks will be held after Ramadan and Eid el-Fitr, which conclude before the end of August, to discuss security arrangements and other border issues. He said the deal won't come into effect until security arrangements are in place.

In Kenya on Saturday, Clinton welcomed the oil agreement and said in a statement that it reflects "leadership and a new spirit of compromise on both sides."

"Now was the time to bring this impasse to a close, for the good of the people of South Sudan and their aspirations for a better future in the face of ongoing challenges. South Sudan's leaders have risen to the occasion," the statement said.

U.S. President Barack Obama congratulated the countries on Saturday's agreement.

"This agreement opens the door to a future of greater prosperity for the people of both countries," he said in a statement released by the White House Saturday. "The United States will continue to support efforts to advance a lasting peace for the people of Sudan and South Sudan. I encourage the parties to build on the momentum created by these breakthroughs to resolve remaining border and security issues."

The U.N. Security Council had ordered the two sides to reach agreement by Aug. 2 on such outstanding items as oil revenue sharing, the demarcation of their shared border and the status of the contested region of Abyei, which is claimed by both sides.

As part of the 2005 agreement, Abyei was to hold a referendum in January 2011 to decide whether it stays with Khartoum or joins the newly independent South. But both countries disagreed on voter eligibility, and clashed militarily over the area, forcing some 100,000 residents to flee.

South Sudan has called for a new referendum for Abyei to be held before the end of this year. The referendum would be jointly run by the United Nations and African Union and allow anyone living in Abyei for "three continuous years immediately prior to January 9, 2005" to be allowed to vote.

The U.N. Security Council ordered the two sides to hammer out agreements following clashes in April .The May U.N. resolution threatens sanctions against both sides if they did not immediately resume talks and reach a final deal within three months.
