Former UFC fighter Shamar Bailey injured fighting a fire

Shamar Bailey was a part of the thirteenth season of "The Ultimate Fighter," fought twice in the Octagon, and also fought for Strikeforce and Bellator. While he's still fighting, he also works as a firefighter in Indianapolis and was injured Monday when working on a fire that was the work of an arsonist.

Bailey talked about the fire to Bloody Elbow, and said his injuries were routine.

We had a big fire yesterday involving a three story house. It flashed over on us while we were cutting holes in the roof. While we were cutting the holes, there was an explosion. The fire and smoke heated up to a release point and exploded in our faces. Fortunately, we had our masks on, but I did get some exposure in my chest area and on my wrists, and that's where I'm burnt. We went ahead with business and put the fire out, and I actually didn't realize until afterwards that I had been burned.

The house was considered a total loss, and the Indianapolis Fire Department is investigating the arson. Bailey has a fight scheduled against Gideon Ray in December, and doesn't think the second-degree burns he sustained will keep him from fighting.

Bailey isn't the only fighter who moonlights as a firefighter. Retired UFC fighter Chris Lytle worked as a firefighter in Indianapolis throughout his long MMA career, and Eddie Wineland works as a firefighter, as well.

5 Ways Sex Makes Us Smarter | YourTango

5 Ways Sex Makes Us SmarterExercise your brain cells with some sexual activity.

Sex on the brain just might make you a genius.

Here's one major reason I studied communications as an undergraduate and not the sciences: Research seems to always contradict itself.

More from YourTango: This Is Freedom: Couple Kisses Amid Anti-Gay Protests

Of course, the fact that I find science impossibly difficulty is at the top of the list, but still. It seems just yesterday I was reading that just the sight of a sexy woman can make even the brightest man lose 50 IQ points. Today, however, I'm reporting that sex can actually make you smarter.

Yes, researchers at the University of Amsterdam are all about the benefits of a little bit of bump and grind. Sure, a pair of big boobs may make a man forget his name, but maybe the art of doing it is actually a cure?

Here are five ways sex can boost your spirits ? and your brain cells.

1. Mental Capacity. In the most recent University of Amsterdam study, participants who thought about sex performed better on critical thinking problems. Perhaps this is why men are constantly thinking with their heads rather than their brains (ha! Pun).

2. Happiness. Let's start calling semen happy juice, because a SUNY Albany study found it has mood-altering chemicals such as oxytocin.

3. Stress Relief. Careers, kids, bills, replacement refs in the NFL ? everything causes stress. But you know what boosts it? Oxytocin. There's that magical word again! The chemical kicks in 20 seconds after a kiss, so just imagine the benefits of a full romp in the sheets.

4. Self Esteem. Sex! It feels good! And when good feelings are abound, self-esteem shoots through the roof. Though I'm no scientist (see above), I'd imagine high self-esteem has some pretty positive effects on our day-to-day functioning.

More from YourTango: Drinking As A Couple: Do Or Don't?

5. Sleep. Hey, here's that dang oxytocin word again. Aside from lifting spirits and relieving stress, it apparently promotes sleep. A well-rested lady or gent is a smarter one, yes?

U.S. military hypersonic aircraft trial set for 2013

Wed Oct 24, 2012 8:48pm EDT

(Reuters) - The last of four unmanned experimental U.S. military aircraft designed to fly at six times the speed of sound is expected to be tested next year, the program manager said on Wednesday, months after its predecessor broke up during a trial.

The third test flight of the craft, known as the Waverider or X-51A, broke apart over the Pacific Ocean seconds into a test flight in August. U.S. Air Force officials said at the time they did not know if or when their fourth aircraft would fly.

Preliminary results from an investigation into what went wrong during the August flight indicate that a "random vibration issue" caused one of the control fins to deploy early, the X-51 program manager at the Air Force Research Laboratory, Charlie Brink, told reporters on a conference call.

"I can't say conclusively that's it, but it's looking more and more like the cause," Brink said, adding that investigators quickly ruled out a software or power malfunction as a cause of the aircraft's break up.

The Waverider was designed to reach speeds of Mach 6 or above, six times the speed of sound and fast enough to zoom from New York to London in less than an hour.

Analysts say the military has its eye on using the Waverider program to develop missiles with non-nuclear warheads that could strike anywhere in the world within an hour.

Results from the investigation into the third aircraft's failed test flight are expected to be complete in mid-December, Brink said.

"I'm fairly confident that in the next couple of months we'll have the investigation complete and we'll move on. We're already preparing the fourth flight vehicle. We're doing those things in parallel," he said.

Engineers are already modifying the final test X-51A to be ready in late spring or early summer of 2013, he said.

PROGRAM DETAILS CLASSIFIED

The aircraft is known as the Waverider because it stays airborne, in part, with lift generated by the shock waves of its own flight. The Boeing Co's Phantom Works division performed design and assembly on the aircraft, according to the military.

Four X-51A aircraft were built for the military, one of which flew for more than three minutes at nearly five times the speed of sound during a 2010 test flight, the Air Force said.

The experimental aircraft are expected to crash at the end of test flights in any case, and are not considered retrievable.

Pratt & Whitney Rocketdyne designed the X-51A's "scramjet" engine, which uses the forward motion of the craft to compress air for fuel combustion, according to a description of the project from the military.

After being dropped from a B-52 bomber, a solid-rocket booster is used in the initial phase of the plane's flight to bring it up to speeds that can allow its engine to take over, by drawing in air through the craft's forward momentum.

The cost of the experimental aircraft has not been disclosed because many details of the program are classified.

In 2004, NASA reached a speed of Mach 9.6, or nearly 7,000 miles per hour, with a jet-powered aircraft. But that vehicle, known as X-43, only flew for a few seconds and its copper-based engine was not designed to survive the flight.

Engineers have hoped to see the hypersonic X-51A travel for five minutes of powered flight. For protection from extreme heat, it uses insulation tiles, similar to those on the NASA space shuttle orbiters, according to a 2011 military description of the project.

Hypersonic flight is normally defined as beginning at Mach 5, which is five times the speed of sound.

Indian IT services may see uptick in client spending

BANGALORE (Reuters) - India's leading software exporters could see a modest uptick in outsourcing business from the United States and Europe despite a warning on Tuesday from the International Monetary Fund that it sees the risk for a serious global slowdown as "alarmingly high."

India's National Association of Software and Service Companies, or NASSCOM, expects the sector to expand exports by 11-14 percent in the current fiscal year that ends in March, compared with 16 percent last year and about 30 percent before the global financial crisis. India's $100 billion software and services industry relies on the United States and Europe for three-quarters of its revenue.

"We are far from a situation that is reassuring, but the general view is that the economic situation, especially in the U.S., has improved in the last few months," Apurva Shah, head of investment research at BNP Paribas Mutual Fund in Mumbai, told Reuters. "Even though the IMF is not saying anything new, coming from them, people are bound to sit up and take notice. The worry is that any small thing can still suddenly take us back.

"Anecdotally, especially from the larger IT companies, it seems as though the second half of the year might be slightly better," Shah said.

Any pick-up in momentum would cheer investors, especially those in No.2 provider and industry bellwether Infosys Ltd, whose shares are down by a tenth this year after missing revenue targets, lagging the 21 percent gain in the broader market.

Infosys is expected to post a 24.9 percent rise in profit in the quarter ended September 30 to 23.8 billion Indian rupees ($453.59 million), according to Thomson Reuters data, when it kicks off the quarterly earnings season on Friday.

"The mood is a bit upbeat now," said Sudin Apte, CEO of Offshore Insights, an outsourcing market consultancy that recently surveyed 267 companies worldwide on their technology spending plans.

Apte expects a loosening of purse strings compared with six months earlier, not a dramatic shift. "Now you're going to see at least a little bit acceleration in decision making," he said.

Infosys has gained nearly 18 percent since hitting a low in July when it announced a deeper-than-expected cut to its full-year growth forecast. Its larger rival, Tata Consultancy Services Ltd (TCS), added almost 22 percent from its April low this year.

"Infosys has rallied sharply on expectations that there are no further risks to FY13 revenue guidance," UBS analyst Diviya Nagarajan wrote on Oct 4.

Nagarajan expects Infosys to forecast full fiscal year revenue growth of 6 percent, including a 1.5 percent boost from its recent acquisition of Swiss consultancy Lodestone. That implies 4.5 percent growth in Infosys' legacy business, slightly below the company's guidance of 5 percent.

"We think a cut to organic revenue guidance would be a negative surprise," she wrote.

Last month, Infosys agreed to pay about $350 million for Lodestone, which specializes in advising large corporations, such as automaker BMW, on the best use of business management software by SAP AG. The purchase is the largest ever for a company that has been criticized by investors for not being bolder with its $3.7 billion in cash.

Infosys and Tata face increased competition for outsourcing contracts from global players including Accenture and IBM.

In a sign that corporate clients are eager to cut costs but are yet to take the plunge on discretionary spending, global rival Accenture grew its outsourcing revenue 10 percent in the quarter that ended in August, even as consulting revenue fell.

TCS, which will report earnings on Oct 19, is seen reporting a 35 percent rise in quarterly profit to 33.1 billion rupees, Thomson Reuters data showed, while TCS CEO N. Chandrasekaran has stuck with a bullish tone.

The outlook is "looking good, looks positive, there's no negative news," he said on Sept 25.

Demand for cost-cutting by clients in the UK, Germany and France is potentially to the benefit of outsourcers if it means moving some functions to lower-cost offshore locations.

"Indian companies are more aggressive in continental Europe than ever before," said Frederic Giron, a principal analyst with Forrester Research, who advises corporations on their outsourcing strategies and choice of vendors.

"Even second-tier IT companies are increasingly trying to get on the radar of European IT buyers," Giron said.

UK may lift curbs on shale gas, offer tax help

LONDON/BIRMINGHAM (Reuters) - The British government expressed support for shale gas on Monday, with the energy minister saying he hoped to allow more exploration and the finance minister talking of a favourable tax regime for the energy source opposed by many environmentalists.

Edward Davey, who heads Britain's Department of Energy and Climate Change (DECC), said he hoped to lift a suspension on new shale gas exploration that was imposed last year due to concerns about the fracking technology used to exploit it.

"I hope it will prove possible for me to give a green light to shale," Davey told a gas conference in London.

Speaking at the ruling Conservative Party conference in Birmingham, central England, Chancellor (finance minister) George Osborne said he was considering a "generous new tax regime" to encourage investment in shale gas.

"The idea that we should be sitting on enormous energy reserves that could potentially create thousands of jobs and reduce consumer bills and not do anything about it is absolutely absurd," an aide of Osborne told reporters at the party conference.

The aide said one option for a shale gas tax regime would be to remove it from a supplementary charge on corporation tax that applies to offshore North Sea oil and gas exploration.

"I'm sure there are other options, but that is why we want to have a consultation with the industry," the aide added.

The government suspended the development of shale gas extraction last year after the work triggered two small earthquakes near Blackpool, in the northwest, adding to fears about hydraulic fracturing - a method of drilling through shale deposits to retrieve gas by injecting liquids and chemicals.

"In principle, I'm all in favour of exploiting new resources. I would welcome as much as anyone a way to boost Britain's indigenous gas supplies and to reduce energy prices to consumers and businesses alike," Davey said.

The British business lobby welcomed the government's move on proposals to provide incentives for shale gas exploration.

"It makes sense to maximise the amount of energy we can produce at home at reasonable cost," John Cridland, Director-General of the Confederation of British Industry (CBI) said in a statement.

"Incentivising the exploration of shale gas sits alongside investment in renewables," he added.

CAUTION

The energy ministry now has to decide whether to allow new holes to be drilled. Davey said his department was approaching the question with caution.

"I make no apology for being a little more patient. Questions about regulatory oversight and the involvement of communities need to be answered rather than simply dismissed," he said.

Environmental groups and large sections of the public in western Europe oppose fracking. Bulgaria and France have both banned shale gas exploration which they say poses unacceptable risks of water and soil pollution and health risks.

The industry hopes that a domestic shale gas sector could ease rising gas import dependency.

Britain was a net exporter of gas until 2004, but a steady decline in output over the past few years has made it more reliant on imports, mostly from Norway and, increasingly, Qatar.

The British Geological Survey estimates Britain's onshore shale reserves at 5.3 trillion cubic feet (150 billion cubic metres), which would be enough to meet its gas consumption for one and a half years, although UK shale gas exploration firms such as Cuadrilla Resources have put their figures as high as 200 trillion cubic feet.

In the United States, a shale gas boom has resulted in a sharp rise in natural gas production, leading to a collapse in domestic prices and the possibility of the U.S. exporting liquefied natural gas (LNG) by 2015.

Woman on 'Wife Swap' as teen to plead not guilty

BUFFALO, N.Y. (AP) ? A former teen pageant princess featured in an eyebrow-raising episode of the TV show "Wife Swap" getting spray-tanned by her father and pitying the less attractive will plead not guilty this week to charges of prostitution and drug possession, her lawyer said.

Alicia Guastaferro was arrested at a western New York Thruway travel plaza in August. State troopers investigating a complaint of erratic driving reported finding her and a Rochester attorney "slumped over" and apparently passed out in a running car.

The 21-year-old Guastaferro told troopers she had met attorney James Doyle while bartending in Niagara Falls two years earlier and that he paid her $500 to $700 twice a month to spend the night with him and have sex, according to court documents. The drug charges involve prescription medication in her purse.

Guastaferro, who also was charged with initially lying to troopers about her name and age, will plead not guilty in Pembroke Town Court on Tuesday, said her lawyer, Dan Killelea. He declined to comment further. Killelea said he advised Guastaferro not to talk about her case while it is pending.

Doyle, meanwhile, is due in court in November on charges of drunken driving, patronizing a prostitute and unlawfully dealing with a child for allegedly buying Guastaferro drinks. The 54-year-old has denied the allegations, telling local media in August they were "factually and morally wrong." He declined to say anything more when reached by phone Friday.

Guastaferro's appearance on a 2008 episode of ABC's "Wife Swap," recorded when she was 15, made her an instant target of ridicule at school and sent her into psychiatric care for post-traumatic stress disorder, depression, an eating disorder and panic attacks, Guastaferro said in a $100 million lawsuit she filed in 2010 against ABC and its parent company, Walt Disney Co.

The episode showed her parents doing Guastaferro's homework, tucking gifts beneath a year-round Christmas tree and buying her a Chevrolet Tahoe that she was too young to drive.

In her lawsuit, Guastaferro said scenes of her saying things like "I do feel sorry for people that are not gorgeous people" and being spray-tanned by her father were staged and that she was told to "act a little more spoiled."

The lawsuit was settled last year. The terms were not disclosed, according to Nathan Siegel, who represented the network.

Last year, while Guastaferro was working as a dancer at a strip club, her parents were sentenced in federal court after pleading guilty to criminal charges.

Ralph Guastaferro was sentenced to two years in prison for laundering $1.2 million for a Canadian telemarketing scheme through two business checking accounts he opened. His wife, Karen, was given three years of probation for paying employees of the couple's suburban Buffalo glass-tinting business off the books.

Alicia Guastaferro's letters to the sentencing judge seeking leniency for her parents describe her mental distress and high doses of prescription medicine, which she said her parents monitored.

"I need my parents more than anything right now in my life as they help me survive each and every day," she wrote in a letter submitted to the court in June 2011.

Alicia Guastaferro also is a plaintiff in a pending lawsuit claiming she and other dancers were denied overtime pay for their work for the owner of several strip clubs.
