Curiosity didn?t kill the cat, but it might have given him Repetitive Strain Injury.

In the modern day games industry, hype is king. For better or worse, it has become the Holy Grail of games development. Certainly, it serves as a far better indicator of a games eventual success than any measure of quality, to the chagrin of both journalists and gamers alike. PR and marketing budgets now outstrip, or at least match, that of any other department in the big triple-A studios. Against this backdrop of flash advertising, social media manipulation and rampant merchandising, full of sound and fury, stands the High Magician of hype himself ? Peter Molyneux. Though famous for being a great British innovator, he is equally as notorious for his habit of making very large promises, which he doesn?t always manage to fulfil. His eccentricities make him similar to that other, classically British staple ? the divisive breakfast treat Marmite. Whilst some portray him as the eternal snake-oil salesman, hoodwinking innocent folk out of their hard earned cash with his grand promises, many of us take a kinder view. His enthusiasm and love of games seems genuine, and the uniqueness of the man shines through in the glimpses of genius in his projects.

After leaving his beloved Lionhead Studios as well as his post at Microsoft as its Creative Director, Molyneux wasted no time in forming a new, independent startup by the name of 22 Cans. This Guildford-based team represents a change in direction for the excitable Surrey boy ? away from triple-A games for console to smaller, mobile-based projects. ?Curiosity: Whats In The Cube?? is the first attempt by the company to establish a reputation and to try their hand in the mobile space. To this end, they have tried to accomplish something totally different to anything that came before it. The premise of the game is simple: there is a giant, monolithic cube floating in a white room. This supercube is made up of a huge number of smaller cubelets ? 64 billion, to be precise. The aim of the game is to chip away all these blocks, one at a time, layer by layer, and get to the centre of the cube. Here?s the kicker though ? every user of the app is working on the same cube. That?s right, there is one persistent cube that everybody is working on. Which means, in true Highlander style, there can only be one person to crack the last little brick and reach the centre?.

?so what happens then? ? ? ? ?

cube surface showing green layer

What mysteries lie beneath the exterior?

?This is the true driving force behind this project. Molyneux himself has stated that ?Curiosity? is less of a game than it is a social experiment. He has promised (in usual hyperbolic fashion) that what lies at the centre of the cube is ?life-changingly amazing?, that it ?has to be something that you and me and journalists and consumers and the biggest tappers in the world judge as being amazing.? (Before you get too excited guys, he has already denied it being money or Half Life 3). What he wants to know is, is curiosity enough for people to get to the centre of the cube?

The game revolves around one simple mechanic ? tap a cube and it dissolves, with a satisfying musical and visual flourish. The more cubes you tap in a row, the more your combo multiplier increases, and the more gold you receive. This gold can be exchanged at the in-game store for better chisels, bombs etc so you can BREAK MOAR CUBEZ!!1!1!! At some point in the future, it is assumed that the shop will also offer real-money microtransactions for the aforementioned equipment, with a Diamond Chisel allegedly on offer for a measly ?50,000 that should all but guarantee you access to the cubes mysterious heart. That aside, however, the game really is that simple ? just keep tapping. In fact, it really does struggle to even meet the criteria of what could be considered a game. One does wonder if it?s all a joke, a commentary by Molyneux of the social gaming phenomenon characterised by Zynga?s products or a parody of the Pavlovian mechanics exploited by games like Wow and Call of Duty. I hope it isn?t, because Cow Clicker already did it.

This debut offering by 22 Cans is intended to be the first of a number of similar experiments, all leading to Molyneux using his findings to create some mobile-centred magnum opus. In fact, this makes it quite difficult to review, because it can?t be judged by the standards one would normally apply to games. ?How do you quantify a social experience? By what benchmarks do you judge a one-off, never to be repeated experiment?

YouTube Preview Image

Firstly, the game has suffered a number of launch issues. The demand was higher than expected and so the servers have failed to cope so far, with swathes of people not even being able to connect to the cube. This is unforgiveable, really, as the game was intended to be a mass experience from the start, and was also hyped to the hilt. One understands that the technical difficulty of setting up a single, real-time, ?persistent gameworld for hundreds of thousands of people is an immense task, but it?s not like the dev team didn?t know what they were getting into. Luckily, it has noticeably improved as time goes on, but it has certainly turned a lot of people off the experience immediately. Once you get into the server, however, the graphics are nice and functional, and watching the deterioration of the cube unfold is fascinating. You could spend hours just poring over the cube, looking at everyones little doodles and graffiti (although, predictably, the proportion of crudely drawn genitalia and curse-words is pretty high!). It was an inspired decision by 22 Cans to omit any sort of chat function, forcing anonymous players to express themselves using only the cube. The hypnotic music and sound effects add to the game, making it a strange and relaxing experience. Also, breaking the cube just feels right, an element that makes a huge difference. In the long run, however, is it going to be enough? The success of this game is going to rely on a few things. First of all, Molyneux has to keep things fresh, and keep the momentum going. He has promised that the experiment will take unexpected turns as it goes along, and has hinted at mysterious happenings as layers are taken away. In recent days he has let loose a torrent of speculation by saying that players are not solely just working on the cube, but that they are simultaneously doing ?something else?. Whether this ?something? is truly exciting or revolutionary is beside the point ? the whole point is in the title. The better our Peter can keep the curiosity up, the better the experience.

Ultimately, however, this game is going to live or die in peoples memories for one thing ? the big reveal. Will this game be the turning point of Molyneux?s reputation, the glorious victory over his naysayers? Many of us feel we have had our fingers burned by him in the past, and yet, like ill-treated lovers, we listen to his promises and come back each time, convinced that this time it?s different. Will it be?

We have a thread over on our forums on what people think lies at the cube?s heart, go get involved!

Pros:

  • Soothing, hypnotic atmosphere
  • Strangely?addictive?and satisfying gameplay
  • Interesting to watch other players graffiti unfold
  • WHATS IN THE BOX?!?!

?Cons:

  • You just tap a cube. That?s it.
  • Hideous server issues.
  • The looming possibility of ?extreme disappointment

Final Score:

Could be amazing?..but could also be an unrivalled waste of man-hours.

Couples' counseling and verbal abuse?? - Talk About Marriage

Hi all,

I'm new here, just looking for some perspectives/ advice on this. I've been in a relationship with my boyfriend for nearly four years now and we have a 2 year old son. For the past two years he's been verbally abusive toward me and has refused or has been unable to acknowledge it. Usually when I bring it up, I'm "imagining it" or I'm "being too sensitive" or "can't take a joke." It ranges from criticisms of how I parent our child, how I do housework, how many hours I work, etc. to full on screaming or yelling and calling me names or stupid, sometimes in front of our son or in public. I know that this has been a pattern for him, in past relationships. He's finally in the past few days been able to admit that this isn't right and asked me flat out if he's abusive. I was thinking, like, welcome to the party I just recently started going to counseling with the intention that we would go together and work on this, as we have a family. What I'm wondering is, would couples' counseling even be productive for us in this situation? I feel like he at least would benefit more from individual therapy, but that's not something he's willing to do. I'm at a point where I don't feel that I can or should continue this relationship unless there is a significant change as the quiet times between outbursts are just not worth it to me anymore and this is not what I want for my son. Any thoughts or experiences on this? Thanks much in advance...

road blocks & roller coasters ? Incredible Family

Every morning Jack Jack springs out of bed and excitedly asks ?is foster sister here yet??. ?I understand that he doesn?t fully understand the reality of having a baby in the house, but its still the cutest thing ever. ?He?s been telling everyone about ?foster sister? and both boys were excited when they overheard me talking about our home visit scheduled this week?Dash immediately said with excitement ?oh! is the baby coming today???

We knew that foster care & adoption was going to be a long and bumpy journey, and this week has only proved that to be true.

When we started this process, we always looked at foster care as an avenue to adoption. ?We knew it might not be the first or even the fourth baby, but eventually a baby in our home would be freed for adoption and as sad as that moment would be for our foster child, we would be ready and willing to make them a permanent part of our family.

We also did know, however, that we had some obstacles to overcome since we have a tight 2-bedroom home. ?The sitting area outside the master bedroom upstairs has served as our adorable nursery for both boys, but doesn?t exactly meet ?state regulations?. ?Our social worker knew we had a plan for a friend to put a wall up in order to gain the necessary adoption approval when that time came and both she and her supervisor had assured us that that would work for us.

Imagine our surprise when we failed our adoption home visit this week. ?Not because of a lack of a wall not yet installed, but because the ceilings are too low?thus making the room just 5 square feet too small to qualify for adoption. ?That?s it, just a tiny little roadblock. ?Just a few square feet too short.

We were devastated. ?We just couldn?t see how we were going to make it work. ?Our builder friend graciously came and looked at the space again and we determined?again?that we just don?t have the finances to undertake a home expansion. ?We talked and talked and just can?t imagine opening our home to a child and knowing that there would be no way to keep her/him if they needed a permanent home. ?That would be too incredibly painful and we?re not willing to subject ourselves to that possibility.

So for the past several days, it?s been too painful for me to talk about; just walking past this sight every day brought me to tears every time?.

We?ve been doing some soul searching, though, as well as asking ourselves how far are we willing to go for this?

Ultimately, both of us feel extremely strongly that this dream is worth fighting for, that people are worth potential inconveniences to us, and that we want to find a way to make it work. ?We also both feel that despite some of our strong emotions this week?of disappointment and doubt, that God?s timing IS perfect. ?Whether this happens in a month, or in three years when we?ve saved up more money and are able to change our circumstances, it will be okay. ?Maybe the child who needs us most isn?t ready for us yet!

So where do we go from here? ? We?ll take too big of a loss on our house if we sell in this market, and we can?t afford to expand, and the baby has to have their own room in order for us to qualify for adoption, and we only have two bedrooms. ?Stumped.

And then, just like that, literally just when I came to peace with whatever and whenever, a solution was right in front of me: ? our dining room could be our bedroom and the baby could have our room. ?We don?t use our formal living room and could easily move our dining room things into our living room. It will make our house feel much smaller, and we won?t have a beautiful decorative living room, but does that really matter? ?We can put a wall or doors up in the dining room to turn it into an official bedroom, and we?re all set. ?Inconsequential cost, and a huge bedroom for baby:)?hee hee. ?And when that baby is ours forever, we?ll have a wall tearing down party. ?Feels pretty symbolic, huh?

As with all of our decisions, we need to let it sit with us for a few days and make sure this is how we?re going to move forward. ?I also need to consult with our social worker and the home inspector again and determine does this room have to be ready before we begin fostering or can we create the room once the fostering looks like it will move toward adoption?

Road blocks & roller coasters?..all part of this journey. ?Isn?t that how life works, though? ? My first two miracles were full of incredible road bumps and at times road blocks and it was all worth it in the end. ?So little Miss Lyla is creating drama already, that?s what girls do best:)

The Next Generation Shared Services through BPO | Outsourcing ...

Touchscreen interfaceExecutives are all asking similar questions of their shared service organizations (SSO):

  • ?How do I get to the next level of shared services and realize more value??
  • ?How do I change my SSO model to expand services and go global??
  • ?How do I drive continuous process improvement initiatives??
  • ?How do I deal with social media and big data??

Depending on timelines, costs or politics, many first-generation SSO initiatives started out with a goal of centralizing business processes to meet short-term budgetary goals primarily through FTE reductions. With today?s business environment, executives are now aligning their shared services goals with overall long-term corporate goals, and the SSO?s vision is expanding to a broader strategic role in sourcing.

With the demands and opportunities of globalization, companies are developing new sourcing models with a focus on outsourcing transactional processes under control of the SSO as well as adding more value-added processes to it.

SSOs are moving to the next generation by implementing the following processes and capabilities:

New operating models ? new services and new geographies

First- generation SSO operating models started as a consolidation of processes such as finance and accounting into a central location. Then many SSOs evolved to a consolidation of multiple business processes in an entrepreneurial, separate business unit, stand-alone shared services operation.

Next generation SSOs are now shifting to global integrated service delivery models with regional hubs and centers of excellence. Many multi-national companies are creating regional service centers in lower cost areas, and the majority of large corporations have more than one shared service center. There has been significant growth lately in Latin American centers (serving US and Canada), Eastern European (serving EMEA), and China and the Philippines (serving Asia Pac).

Other SSOs are blending their offerings into hybrid models (shared services and BPO) providing back-office, transactional services through BPO arrangements. The BPO provider already has established operations in the geographies that the SSO and its business units are looking to grow into. By leveraging the BPO?s existing infrastructure, the SSO can improve speed to market, avoid start-up costs and still take advantage of labor arbitrage savings.

The types of services SSOs are offering are expanding to include not only the typical transactional processes but also:

  • True end-to-end services, such as procure-to-pay
  • More cutting-edge services around big data analytics and social media
  • Customer-facing and competency-based processes, such as vendor management

Again the BPO advantage of having pre-existing infrastructures and an experienced team providing these services is causing more SSOs to leverage their service provider for these higher-end services instead of building it themselves. This is especially true when they require technology investments and specialized skills that may not be available in the local SSO market.

Continuous improvement process

The first generation of SSO typically took a project approach to implementing process improvements with the focus often on reducing specific operating costs and/or achieving a stable level of operating maturity.

To move to the next generation, SSOs must implement a continuous improvement strategy. The next generation SSO has its own in-house consulting group with Lean Six Sigma skills that is constantly analyzing the SSO business processes against benchmarks and best practices and determining the best path to achieve process optimization through standardization and process re-engineering. Successful SSOs recognize that ?going live? is only the beginning?to continue to add value, they must persistently standardize, consolidate and re-engineer.

?

?

Mature SSO organizations that have a BPO relationship typically align their provider with developing and executing their continuous improvement strategy. The SSO and BPO provider teams typically work together on certain end-to-end process improvement initiatives and separately on other initiatives where each respective party owns the cost/benefit. For example, a BPO provider that has guaranteed certain on-going process improvements as part of future reduced fees may take the lead and own implementing middleware that would provide a standard data-entry screen that could then feed various client systems to enable more efficient processing of data by the provider team.

Continuous improvement departments are the driving force for not only cost-cutting process efficiencies but also operational and relationship improvements. The continuous improvement team should be focused on proactively addressing change management issues?identifying, communicating and transitioning the cultural, technology, personal and process changes that are an inherent part of the shared service and outsourcing lifecycles.

Service management

First generation shared services management focused on cost controls and basic operating metrics for the shared service center portfolio management, being a blend of resource allocation, risk assessment, and balanced scorecard analysis. The benefits of developing service management include optimizing customer service, improving customer satisfaction and reducing overall service costs.

Companies are expanding their sourcing options. As a result, their make/buy decisions are leading many SSOs to sourcing strategies that include outsourcing as an enabler of standardization and process reengineering as well as a way to drive on-going continuous improvement strategy across all functions and geographies.

In order to move to the next generation, the SSO should establish a service management framework and processes for those services associated with supporting the shared services organization. New generation SSOs are managing both the internally-provided functions and the business process outsourcing relationships of sourced functions.

The SSO must drive optimization and management of its mixed services portfolio by developing a strong governance organization, with a focus on compliance and measurement. The commitment must be to best practices and benchmarking KPIs that have a direct business impact. There should be an emphasis on innovation, not just cost and quality. A strong service management framework will allow the SSO to manage its BPO providers through a shared scorecard that rewards the BPO providers that are achieving the SSO goals and proactively manages the lower performers to raise the bar or have their workload/future opportunities erode over time.

Relationship management

The key to relationship management is building stakeholder consensus. The SSO director should continuously leverage key stakeholders to understand customer requirements. With BPO providers focused on quality of processes, the SSO is now able to work with the business units to coordinate process improvements of people, processes and technology. Too often SSOs are siloed off instead of strategically integrated with the business units.

The outsourcing buyer should analyze the SSO?s effect on sales and service effectiveness. The best way to do this is through regular open communication. There should be monthly status meetings, quarterly process improvement meetings and an annual SLA update meeting.

With the next-generation shared services, the value proposition is a shift in focus from just reduced costs toward developing the intangible assets of the enterprise. The SSO operating model must attract, retain and develop profitable customers. At the same time, the enterprise must be able to seamlessly work with other providers in order to provide faster time to market and better customer value.

The SSO director must clearly align the SSO operating model and the BPO provider to corporate goals and strategy to present the value side of the equation to the stakeholders/customers. Ongoing measurement and management of the SSO?s customer relations will drive continuous improvement as well as continuing expansion of services.

Technology innovations

Research shows that technology changes every 18 to 24 months. However, companies only change every three to five years, due to mergers and acquisition, customer demands and business or regulatory requirements. Historically, some benefits of shared services were consolidating business processes on common IT platforms and creating common languages and databases. This may have required moving to a single ERP version, cleaning up data bases (such as item, vendor and customer master files) and providing access via servers and seat licenses. With globalization, SSOs now have to deal with the need for faster innovation, heightened security issues and global business demands.

New-generation SSOs are leveraging their BPO provider to take advantage of their investment in new technology, automating processes to reduce costs and improve service levels. Many SSOs are adopting cloud-based BPO services to consolidate on common platforms, which maximize the use of hardware and software applications. They are developing global knowledge strategies in which data management is a value-added process, where the SSO can use its BPO provider platform to organize, control, update and increase company knowledge.

The next generation

More companies are seeking to focus their energies and resources on their core competencies to take advantage of strategic opportunities and needs. For those organizations that have implemented shared services, one of the next steps in the maturity level continuum is to evaluate BPO to determine how to gain further value. SSOs are in a perfect position to manage these third-party providers for their companies as they typically have already developed a strong governance organization. With an internal relationship to the customer and on-going collaboration with the stakeholders, they are able to proactively manage the mixed service portfolio and provide continuous improvement and on-going productivity savings.

Long gone are the days of SSO vs. BPO. Instead, we?re seeing BPO as one of the main enablers of today?s next-generation shared service organizations.

Roche's Avastin gets positive opinion from EMA | pharmaphorum

The European Medicines Agency has granted a positive opinion for the additional data of Roche?s Avastin treatment beyond first progression in patients with advanced colorectal cancer.

The EMA based their opinion on additional data provided from the ML18147 clinical study on the current European label of Avastin (bevacizumab), which demonstrated that patients with metastatic colorectal cancer who were initially treated with Avastin, lived longer when they continued on Avastin-based therapy after their disease had progressed for the first time, than those who received only chemotherapy after disease progression.

Therefore, the EMA?s decision will allow patients diagnosed with metastatic colorectal cancer, that receive Avastin plus chemotherapy as a first line treatment, to continue to receive Avastin plus chemotherapy as a second line treatment after their cancer worsens.

??People with metastatic colorectal cancer who continued Avastin treatment with a new chemotherapy regimen after their cancer worsened lived longer than patients who changed to a new chemotherapy only. This positive CHMP opinion is an important step towards potentially changing the approach to treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer and providing a new option for patients.?

Hal Barron M.D., Roche?s Chief Medical Officer and Head of Global Product Development.

Avastin is the only biological therapy proven to increase overall survival when used first-line, beyond first progression, and in second-line treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.

Over 1.2 million new cases of colorectal cancer are diagnosed each year, making it one of the most common cancers in the world.

London meets Manchester

Beautifulmag_seth london9NO PLEASE, DON?T BE SHOCKED. WE DID NOT CHANGE OUR OBJECTIVES. WE ARE NOT GOING TO PRESENT YOU AN EXTENSIVE REPORTAGE OF THE LATEST SOCCER GAME BETWEEN LONDON AND MANCHESTER. THE FOLLOWING STORY TALKS ABOUT A VERY DIFFERENT KIND OF ENCOUNTER THAT INVOLVES LONDON AND MANCHESTER. NOT AT ALL IN THE WAY YOU MIGHT EXPECT.
Beautifulmag_seth london4 Beautifulmag_seth london8 Beautifulmag_seth london5
The city of Manchester is located in the north west of England and is, after London and Birmingham, the third largest urban area in the United Kingdom. It is also home to David McIntosh. Dave grew up in Manchester and has ever since he was a kid showed a great interest in sports. In fact he liked sports so much that, even though his grades were good, he never showed any interest for college. Dave is a man of action. And so it came to happen that Dave left school at the age of 16 and decided to embark on the hardest and longest training in the world.
Beautifulmag_seth london1 Beautifulmag_seth london23 Beautifulmag_seth london19 Beautifulmag_seth london10
At age 16 Dave Mac, as he calls himself as well, signed up for an intense 32-weeks long infantry training which eventually bought him a career with the Royal Marines. As a commando he received the coveted green beret. His job made him discover the world, and Dave served all over the Middle East, Afghanistan being one of the most dangerous assignments of all. Dave Mac chose the hard life. A life of conflict and combat, encounter and action. And that would probably not make Dave the kind of man to start up a modeling career. But that is exactly what he did. Because Dave Mac never leaves a challenge untried.
Beautifulmag_seth london7 Beautifulmag_seth london17 Beautifulmag_seth london21 Beautifulmag_seth london16
Recently David McIntosh traveled to New York City for the first time and it was in New York where he met London. Seth London that is. Seth is an established photographer who resides on Long Island and lives by the motto that as long as New York never sleeps, his camera does neither. Dave Mac has most definitely experienced that first hand: ?My recent trip to NYC was fun. I didn't really party much or see any sights as I was shooting every single day, but I did meet some real cool people which made it all good. And I also had the best pizza around Welldone NYC.? Seth hasn?t been in the photographers field for a very long time, but has already made quite a name for himself as artistic and fashion photographer. And especially that experience in fashion was exactly what Dave was looking for in New York: ?I've been doing modeling on and off for a few years but last year I decided to put my all into it and not just dominate the fitness scene but take on everything, including fashion.?
Beautifulmag_seth london2 Beautifulmag_seth london15 Beautifulmag_seth london22 Beautifulmag_seth london12
Although Dave Mac has tasted the pleasures of the fashion world ? the exciting parties and meeting interesting people ? he also believes the fashion world is not very diverse: ?There are types of clothes and styles for everyone yet we only seem to see one slim n tall on the catwalk.? The catwalk however is not a place were we likely will find Dave. His years of sports and his military career has shaped his body into muscular perfection and he is not likely to sacrifice anything from those beautiful curves for a night on the catwalk. Something tells me most of you all completely agree with that decision. ?BM-

Train crashes into Texas wounded veterans parade

(AP) ? An event organizer says there are "multiple injuries" after a train crashed into a trailer carrying veterans during a West Texas parade.

"Show of Support" president and founder Terry Johnson tells the Midland Reporter-Telegram (http://bit.ly/TPvsN4 ) that a Union Pacific train slammed into a trailer that was on its way to a wounded veterans event Thursday evening.

He says there are "multiple, multiple" injuries and organizers still are trying to account for everyone.

Midland city spokesman Brian Stout tells The Associated Press he doesn't yet have details about the crash. The AP has left messages with event organizers, Midland Memorial Hospital and the National Transportation Safety Board.

The parade was supposed to end at a "Hunt for Heroes" banquet before wounded service members were treated to a deer-hunting trip this weekend.

Issues tracking your UK Nexus delivery online? Here's why

Android Central

If, like me, you're eagerly awaiting the delivery of your new Nexus 4 or Nexus 10 to a UK address, you'll no doubt have encountered some issues tracking the package online. Google sent out a TNT consignment number with every shipping email, along with a handy hyperlink to track that item online. But, tracking those numbers seems to bring up either an error or a completely different package belonging to someone else. Frustrating? Absolutely. But, the good news is it's an easy fix.

The "TNT # ..." number provided to you by Google isn't the consignment number of the package as they would have you believe. This number is in fact your customer reference number. This can be used to track the package too though, so don't fret. On the tracking page on the TNT website, ensure that the "Reference Number" box is checked and not the "Consignment Number" box. Click track, and it should bring up all you need to know.

Erdrich wins National Book Award for fiction

NEW YORK (AP) ? The National Book Awards on Wednesday honored both longtime writers and new authors, from Louise Erdrich for "The Round House" to Katherine Boo for her debut work, "Beyond the Beautiful Forevers."

Erdrich, 58, has been a published and highly regarded author for nearly 30 years but had never won a National Book Award until being cited Wednesday for her story about an Ojibwe boy and his quest to avenge his mother's rape. A clearly delighted and surprised Erdrich, who's part Ojibwe, spoke in her tribal tongue and then switched to English as she dedicated her fiction award to "the grace and endurance of native people."

Boo's nonfiction book, set in a Mumbai slum, also is a story of a boy and his harsh and illuminating education in the consequences of crime or perceived crime. The author, a Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist currently on staff with The New Yorker, said she was grateful for the chance to live in a world she "didn't know" and for the chance to tell the stories of those otherwise ignored. She praised a fellow nominee and fellow Pulitzer-winning reporter, the late Anthony Shadid, for also believing in stories of those without fame or power.

Poetry winner David Ferry is a year older than one of the night's honorary recipients, Elmore Leonard. Ferry, 88, won for "Bewilderment: New Poems and Translations," a showcase for his versatile style. He fought back tears as he confided that he thought there was a chance for winning because he "was so much older" than the other nominees. He called the award a "pre-posthumous" honor.

The other competitive prize Wednesday went to William Alexander, whose "Goblin Secrets" won for young people's literature.

Alexander quoted fellow fantasy writer Ursula Le Guin in highlighting the importance of stories for shaping kids' imaginations and making the world a larger place than the one they live in.

"We have to remember that," Alexander said.

The ceremony went smoothly even though Superstorm Sandy badly damaged the offices of the award's organizer, the National Book Foundation, whose staffers had to work with limited telephone and mail access.

Winners, chosen by panels of fellow writers, each received $10,000. Judges looked through nearly 1,300 books.

Honorary prizes were given to Leonard and New York Times publisher and chairman Arthur O. Sulzberger Jr.
